Ezer and Elead were killed by native-born men of Gath, who had come to seize their livestock.  Their father Ephraim mourned for many days and his relatives came to comfort him.  Then, he and his wife had their son Beriah, which is similar to the Hebrew word for "misfortune".

Daughter Sheerah built the Lower & Upper Beth Horon, and Uzzen Sheerah (cool, a powerful female!)

Rephah -> *Resheph -> *Telah -> *Tahan -> *Ladan -> *Ammihud -> *Elishama -> *Nun -> *Joshua (you know, the guy that became leader after Moses died.  Also, the guy that looks really hot in Charlton Heston's "The Ten Commandments".)

Their lands and settlements: Bethel and its villages, Naaran to the east, Gezer and its villages to the west, Shechem and its villages all the way to Ayyah and its villages.  Along the borders of Manasseh, they lived in Beth Shan, Taanach, Megiddo, Dor, and its villages.  These are where the descendants of Joseph son of Israel lived.

Asher

Jether -> *Jephunneh, *Pispah, *Ara

Ulla -> *Arah, *Hanniel, *Rizia

These were the heads of the families, choice men, brave warriors, and outstanding leaders.  The tribe of Asher had 26,000 fighting men in total.

Lori's Thoughts:

1. These men were warriors.  They were soldiers for God, put in charge of protecting His people.  In previous chapters, we met priests and shepherds.  Everyone has a distinct purpose and ability.  The Israelite tribes were able to function because of the diversity of its people.  God made us individuals.  His plan is to have us be a prosperous people, working together.

2. These tribes had many wives, and some of them married their sisters.  I want to point out that this book is a record of their lineage, not regulations for how we are to live.  We know now the implications of inter-family relations - birth defects.  We can see human imperfections in the Bible.  The lesson from this is that God works with us and blesses us, while we are broken.  He loves us as we are, even when we're wretched, and works with us towards perfection.

3. Family is very important.  We can see this when Ephraim mourns for his murdered sons.  His family came together to support and comfort him.  I encourage you to strengthen your family ties.  I know this is easier said than done, especially if you have a broken family, like mine.  A lot of times I want to just go it alone.  BUT - it is the devil's tactic to divide God's people.  We're weaker that way.  For example, the tribe of Israel became divided into Israel and Judah.  One by one, each tribe turned from God and they were all exiled from their promised land.  Don't let this happen to you.  This weekend, my family and I anointed our apartment, asking for God to expel evil spirits and prevent evil from entering our home.  We went to church together and heard Nicol Sponberg (former singer of Selah) perform.  Our home is much more peaceful now, so it's easier to get along with my mother and sisters.  Try it.  We have no super power, other than the ability to talk to God, which you also have.

I Peter 5 (NIV)

Summary:

To Elders and Young Men
Verses 1-11

Peter appeals to his fellow elders, as a witness to Christ's sufferings, and as a sharer in the glory to be revealed.  He urges them to be shepherds of God's flock that has been placed under their care.  They are to do this, not out of obligation, but out of a willingness to serve.  They are not to lord their position over their flock, but be an example to them.  When the Chief Shepherd appears, they'll receive the crown of glory that never fades.

Peter then appeals to young men, to be submissive to those that are older.  They are to clothe themselves with humility towards each other.

" 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' " (Proverbs 3:34, Verse 5b)

We are to humble ourselves under God's mighty hand and He will lift us up in due time.

"Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you." (Verse 7)

"Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings." (Verses 8-9)

The God of Grace, who called us into eternal glory in Christ, after we've suffered for a little while, will restore us, making us strong and steadfast.  To Him be the power forever.  Amen.

Final Greetings
Verses 12-14

With the help of Silas, a faithful brother, Peter has written briefly, encouraging us and testifying to the true grace of God.  Stand fast (anchor yourself) in it.

She, who is in Babylon, chosen with us, sends her greetings, as does his son (probably in a spiritual sense), Mark.  We are to greet each other with a kiss of love (Puerto Rican style [on the cheek]).  Peter wishes peace to those in Christ.

Lori's Thoughts:

As an individual, who is mature in their faith, who has walked with God for a while, he or she can be a shepherd to others.  Not that it is our duty, but a privilege to be strong enough, with God, to lead others to Him.  I know I'm not there yet, but I've asked God to lead me in that direction.  I want to trust Him so completely, that all self-doubt is removed.  I want to believe that God can work through this wretch that I am.  He works in us to make us strong, not waiting for us to make ourselves worthy - it'll never happen.  Surrender to Him now, as you are.  Never settle for a sub-par version of yourself.  God isn't.

I have a problem with authority.  I see people in positions of power that are weak or corrupt.  However, there are those that are genuinely good, strong leaders (President Obama, for example).  God wants us to respect all of them.  He wants us to be humble.  My tendency is to be proud, because I think I'm better.  But, I have no right to disrespect anyone.  God loves the good, the bad, and the ugly.  If I am His, I will do the same.  Plus, it says that if we are humble, God will lift us up.  I can't even imagine how awesome a position that will be.  He can, though.

Verse 7 - Cast your anxiety.  Throw it away from yourself!  Too many times, I lay mine at His feet only to bring it back clutched at my chest.  Throw it away!!!  Man, this chapter was for me!  What about you?

We need to resist the devil.  I need to stop letting him beat me up because I slipped up on my vow to God (regarding a certain guy).  What I need to do is remind myself of my vow and rededicate myself to God.  (Trust me, not one single person has failed to say that this guy is bad news.)  Another thing I can do to resist the devil is to not go to the Linkin Park concert.  I love their music.  It helps me vent my anger.  But, I know the kinds of things people do at these concerts - substance abuse and whatnot.  Paul says that everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial.  Going to this concert would not be a sin.  But, it will not bring me closer to God.  I'm in a fragile state right now, so it would probably make me backtrack.  I wouldn't participate in the non-musical activities at the concert, but I would start to doubt my identity and convictions.  No bueno.  I need to stop doubting God's hand in my life.  He can and does take care of me.  If I stand firm, I can show others that they can do the same, with God, in the same situations.

Yes, we will suffer, but God will strengthen us to bring us into His glory, because He is gracious to us.  Why can't I get this into my brain?!  I need to be reminded daily.

Grace is real.  Peter has testified to it.  Is it real for you?

Peter wants us to have peace.  Now, that's love.

The Temple Musicians
Verses 31-81

These are the men that David put in charge of music in the Lord's house, after the ark of the covenant was brought to rest with them.  They ministered with music before the tabernacle and the Tent of Meeting, until Solomon built the Lord's temple.  (Original Tabernacle Choir?)  At these places, they performed their duties according to the regulations laid out for them.

Kohathites: Heman the musician* <- Joel* <- Samuel* <- Elkanah* <- Jeroham* <- Eliel* <- Toah* <- Zuph* <- Elkanah* <- Mahath* <- Amasai* <- Elkanah* <- Joel* <- Azariah* <- Zephaniah* <- Tahath* <- Assir* <- Ebiasaph* <- Korah* <- Izhar* <- Kohath* <- Levi* <- Israel

Their fellow Levites were assigned other duties at the tabernacle, the house of God.  Aaron and his descendants presented offerings on the altars of burnt offerings and incense, as well as performed the duties of the Most Holy Place.  They made atonement for the sins of Israel, in accordance with the commands of Moses, God's servant.

Aaron -> *Eleazar -> *Phinehas -> *Abishua -> *Bukki -> *Uzzi -> *Zerahiah -> *Meraioth -> *Amariah -> *Ahitub -> *Zadok -> *Ahimaaz

These are the locations of their settlements allotted as their territory.  The first lot given to the descendants of Aaron, of the Kohathite clan: Hebron in Judah, with its surrounding pasturelands.  The fields and villages were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh.
-Hebron: city of refuge, Libnah, Jattir, Eshtemoa, Hilen, Debir, Ashan, Juttah, Beth Shemesh, and their pasturelands
-given by the tribe of Benjamin: Gibeon, Geba, Alemeth, Anathoth, and their pasturelands
The remaining descendants of Kohath were allotted 10 towns from the clans of the half-tribe of Manasseh.  This makes 23 towns for the Kohathites.

The descendants of Gershon, by clan, were allotted 13 towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, and Naphtali, and were allotted Bashan from Manasseh.

The descendants of Merari, by clan, were allotted 12 towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

The Israelites, including the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, gave the Levites these towns and pasturelands.

Some Kohathite clans were given territory towns from the tribe of Ephraim: in the hill country - Shechem: city of refuge, Gezer, Jokmeam, Beth Horon, Aijalon, Gath Rimmon, and their pasturelands.
-from Manasseh to the remaining Kohathite clans: Aner, Bileam, and their pasturelands

The Gershonites received - from Manasseh: Golan in Bashan, Ashtaroth, and their pasturelands
-from Asher: Mashal, Abdon, Hukok, Rehob, and their pasturelands
-from Napthali:  Kedesh in Galilee, Hammon, Kiriathaim, and their pasturelands

The Merarites received - from Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah, Rimmono, Taber, and their pasturelands
-from Reuben accross the Jordan, east of Jericho: Bezer in the desert, Jahzah, Kedemoth, Mephaath, and their pasturelands
-from Gad: Ramoth in Gilead, Mahanaim, Heshbon, Jazer, and their pasturelands

Lori's Thoughts:

I love the fact that we can minister through music.  That's how I communicate best with God - praising Him through song and dance.  It talks about David dancing in praise, in the Bible.  Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed by God's love that I physically can't contain it.  I have to move.  I think that's what David meant when he said, "My cup runneth over", in Psalm 23.

Well, there you have it.  God promised to provide a home for the Israelites.  It seems like the Levites were prosperous.  Since they were designated as the priests for the tabernacle, God's dwelling place, they did not receive payment for their work.  So, the other tribes needed to give them a portion of their possessions.  I think this is the origin of tithing - giving a portion of what God has provided for us back to Him.  This goes to support and ensure that ministry continues.  I worried about this when I was in college.  I was working almost full-time to pay for tuition, parking, books, food, and rent.  A mentor told me that he didn't pay tithe in college either.  There are other ways to dedicate yourself to God - you're time, for example.  Now that I have a full-time job, I tithe 10% of my paycheck, and I spend and hour of my time with God every day.  And, you know what, I'm not rich or anything, but God has blessed me with the ability to bless others.  I have never been destitute.  Talk about peace.

I Peter 4 (NIV)

Summary:

Living for God
Verses 1-11

Since Christ suffered in His body, we should arm ourselves with the same attitude.  If we suffer in our bodies, it means we are done with sin.  We no longer live for our evil human desires, but for the will of God.  We've spent enough time living as the pagans live:
-debauchery: excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures
-lust: uncontrolled sexual desires
-drunkenness: temporary states where one's physical and mental abilities are impaired by alcohol
-orgies: wild, drunken revelry
-carousing: drinking deeply and frequently
-detestable idolatry: abominable adoration or devotion to something in excess or in an unthinking manner

"They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation (squandering or wastefulness), and they heap abuse on you.  But they will have to give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead." (Verses 4-5)

This is why the gospel was preached to us and to those who are currently dead, so that we may be judged according to humankind, in regards to the body, but live according to God, in regards to the spirit.

"The end of all things is near.  Therefore, be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray."
(Verse 7)

Above all, we are to love others deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.  (Good song for this verse: "When It Was Over" by Sara Groves - YouTube it, people!)

We are to offer hospitality without grumbling.

"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." (Verse 10)  If your talent is speaking, speak the very words of God.  If it is serving, do it with the strength that God provides.  Do this, so that, in all things, God may be praised through Jesus Christ.

Glory and power be to God forever and ever. Amen.

Suffering for Being a Christian
Verses 12-19

Don't be surprised at the painful trial that you're suffering, as if something strange were happening to you.  Rejoice that you share in Christ's suffering, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.  If you are insulted because of His name, you are blessed, because the Spirit of Glory and of God rests on you.  If you suffer, it shouldn't be as a criminal or a meddler.  As a Christian, don't be ashamed of suffering, but praise God that you bear His name.

It is time for judgment to begins with God's family.  What will the outcome be, then, for those that don't obey the gospel?

" 'If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?' " (Proverbs 11:31, Verse 18)

Those that suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to the faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Lori's Thoughts:

I spent time getting drunk and having sex.  That statement alone gave me a feeling of impending judgment.  Not from God - from you.  Well, this was my attempt to forget my abusive childhood and my survival afterwards, which was a pathetic attempt at living.  Finally, one of my psychologists gave me a verbal slap in the face.  I had a problem with alcohol.  I let alcohol and sex destroy my relationship with my fiance'.  I wanted to die.

But, God stayed my hand.  He held me when I was weeping and alone.  The worst I did was cut off all my hair.  I didn't deserve to be outwardly beautiful, because I was inwardly ugly.

Well, God found something in me that was worth saving.  So, here I am - single, but close to God.  I will no longer be ruled by alcohol or sex.  I will have a drink, but I will not get drunk.  And, the next man I have sex with will be my last.

Verses 4 & 5:  I definitely have friends that can't understand that I live for God first, I go to church on Saturday nights, and I don't need to drink to have fun.  A lot of them choose not to spend time with me.  It's a lonely road, but it's also a peaceful and joyous one.  I feel like I'm living for the first time.  I go to concerts, I travel, I went sky-diving once.  I'm sponsoring a child in Indonesia, I love helping my family and friends with financial or emotional situations.  I feel good.

If you fear God's judgment, maybe it's time to ask yourself who you're living for.  Remember, if we are His, He is for us and will help us fight our tormentors.

Verse 7:  I certainly wasn't clear-minded when I was living in sin.  I was burdened.  I worried about everything.  Now that I have peace, I can easily talk to God all the time.

Our talents can help spread God's grace: the freely given favor and love of God.  We can be His ambassadors.  It kind of makes me feel like Angeline Jolie, powerful and important.  By our service to others, we can inspire those we help to praise God.  As we praise, our problems become less heavy and we can live knowing God will provide for all of our needs.

If we are insulted because we live for God - 1. We have been warned.  2. We know that we have the Holy Spirit. So, praise God that He has adopted you and given you His name: "Child of God".  If you suffer, keep moving on.  You'll become stronger, with God.

I Chronicles 5 (NIV)

Summary:

Key: [] = Mother
         + = Firstborn Son
         * = Son
        d  = Daughter
        w = Wife
Reuben
Verses 1-10

Reuben was the firstborn.  He defiled his father's marriage bed, so his birthrights were given to Joseph.  So, he can't be listed in the genealogical record according to his birthright.  Judah was the strongest and produced a ruler for Israel, but Joseph has the rights of the firstborn.

His sons:  Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, Carmi

Joel -> *Shemaiah -> *Gog -> *Shimei -> *Micah -> *Reaiah -> *Baal -> *Beerah, the leader of the Reubenites, whom Tiglath-Pileser, the king of Assyria, took into exile

These are his relatives by clans, according to the genealogical records: Jeiel the chief, Zechariah, and Bela
- Bela* <- Azaz* <- Shema* <- Joel
- they settled in the area from Aroer to Nebo, and Baal Meon
- to the East, the land reached the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates, because their livestock increased in Gilead
- during Saul's reign, they waged war against the Hagrites and defeated them
- they occupied the Hagrites' dwellings throughout Gilead

Gad
Verses 11-22

The Gadites lived next to the Reubenites, in Bashan through Salecah.  Joel was the chief, Shapham the second-in-command, then Janai and Shaphat.

His relatives listed by families: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber

Buz -> *Jahdo -> *Jeshishai -> *Michael -> *Gilead -> *Jaroah -> *Huri -> *Abihail -> *Guni (head of the family) -> *Abdiel -> *Ahi

They lived in Gilead, Bashan, their outlying villages, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon.

All of this information was recorded during the reigns of Jotham king of Judah and Jereboam king of Israel.

The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh collectively had 44,760 men ready for military service.  These men could handle the shield and sword, use the bow, and were trained for battle.  They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.  God handed the Hagrites and their allies over to them, because they cried out to Him for help.  He answered their prayers because they trusted Him.  They seized the Hagrites' livestock, gaining 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, and 2,000 donkeys.  They took 100,000 people captive.  The rest were slain, because the battle belonged to God.  They occupied the Hagrites' land until the exile of the Israelites.

The Half-tribe of Manasseh
Verses 23-26

The people were numerous.  They settled in Bashan through Baal Hermon (aka Senir or Mt. Hermon).

Heads of the families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel
- brave warriors, famous men

This half-tribe was unfaithful to God.  They prostituted themselves to the gods of the people whom God had destroyed.  God stirred up the spirit of Tiglath-Pileser (aka Pul) king of Assyria, who took Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe into exile.  They were taken to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan.  They are there to this day.

Lori's Thoughts:

The birthright swap from Reuben to Joseph is an example of how God can change our destinies, for the better, if we are devoted to Him.  Being of a high station in the world's eyes doesn't matter to God.  We can be like the adopted Prince of Persia, being know for our integrity of heart.

The Israelites thrived when they obeyed God.  They had a lot of land and a lot of livestock, which is the equivalent to having a lot of money and power.  They were great warriors and had much battle success with God.  They trusted Him, so He protected them and helped them thrive.  He wants to do the same for us, today.  Let Him fight your battles and see how much He cares for you.  Just make sure you completely let go of the reins.

Against God, the Israelites were no longer blessed.  They were exiled.  It's not that God wants to hurt us, it's that He cannot bless us if we reject Him.  And He does everything He can to give us opportunities to come back to Him.

I Peter 3 (NIV)

Summary:

Wives & Husbands
Verses 1-7

Wives are to be submissive to their husbands.  If their husbands do not believe the Word, they may be won over without words by their wives' behavior, purity, and reverence.

Beauty should not come from outward adornments, rather, the inner self should have unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.  This is of great worth in God's sight.  This is also how the holy women of Old Testament times made themselves beautiful.  For example, Sarah was submissive to Abraham and called him her master.  We are her daughters if we follow in her footsteps, doing right, and not giving in to fear.

Husbands are to be considerate and treat their wives with respect as the weaker partner.  Husbands and wives are co-heirs of the gracious gift of life.  Follow this advice, and nothing will hinder your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Good
Verses 8-22

We are to live in harmony, be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.  We are not to repay evil with evil or insult those that insult us.  We are to repay everyone with blessings, because that is what we have been called to do, so that we may inherit a blessing.

" 'Whoever would love life and see good days must keep (their) tongue from evil and (their) lips from deceitful speech.  (They) must turn from evil and do good; (they) must seek peace and pursue it.  For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayers, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.' " (Psalm 34:12-16, Verses 10-12)

Who will harm us, if we're eager to do good?  But, if we suffer for what is right, we are blessed.

" 'Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.' " (Isaiah 8:12, Verse 14b)

In your heart, set apart Christ as Lord.

"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." (Verse 15a)  Do this with gentleness and respect, so that we may keep a clear conscience and those that speak maliciously against our good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good rather than suffer for doing evil.  Christ died for sins once and for all.  He was righteous and died for the unrighteous, so that He could bring us to God.  He was put to death in the body, but made alive by the Spirit, through whom He went and preached to the spirits in prison who had disobeyed while God waited patiently for Noah to build the ark.  Only eight people were saved, by water.  This water symbolizes baptism that saves us.  It is not the removal of dirt, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.  Jesus saves us through His resurrection.  He went to heaven and sits at God's right hand, with angels, authorities, and powers in submission to Him.

Lori's Thoughts:

I would be honored to be the kind of wife that, by my commitment to God, led my husband to Him also.  That would mean that I'd be strong enough in my faith not to be led astray by those that are of the world.  And, I'd be the kind of person that finishes the race (of life on earth to life in heaven) with others, not ahead of or without others.

I certainly did not have a quiet spirit when I was engaged.  Thank God we didn't enter a marriage with such unrest.  Now, with just me and God, I have a beautiful spirit - one with peace and joy.

"Don't give way to fear."  I think this is an important statement, towards the end of the Husband & Wives section.  Maybe we (women) fear being hurt if we're submissive to men.  That's why this verse makes people cringe.  I did when I first read it.  Too many males give us cause to doubt a relationship in which we are submissive.  A functional relationship, based on faith, allows for submission and respect to thrive.

If men respect us, their prayers will not be hindered.  God is against those that do evil, but hears those that do good.  Look at that, I connected two verses.  :)

Don't fear harm from the godless.  We have God who is always with us, watching our backs.  And fronts, and sides, etc.

Q:  What is my answer for the hope that I have?
A:  God save my from depression, suicide, domestic violence, and psychological damage from my childhood.  He taught me to love.  I have hope, because I was given another chance at life.  I've felt Him and I've seen His healing hand at work.  I have hope, so that I can share it with others who are hurting, to let them know that, this too, shall pass.  However, God, that is Love, is forever.

The verse about Christ preaching to the spirits in Noah's time confused me.  I think He was calling everyone's hearts, but only a remnant accepted His call and obeyed His instruction.  These eight alone were saved.  Don't tell me God wishes to harm you.  We're just too stubborn to let Him be the Ruler of our lives.  No, He doesn't want to control us.  He wants to inspire us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

Christ is appealing everyone's hearts again.  Have you accepted Him?

Remember, no matter how bad it gets, we've been warned that these things will happen, but informed that Christ reigns over all.  And we have been promised that we will be delivered, only if we want to be.

Lori's Thoughts:

Jabez asked God to make him more than what his parents made him out to be - a pain.  Enlarging his territory could mean literally giving him more land or dominion.  Or, it could mean, give me more than what this world has offered me; make me more than what I have been allotted.  I (as in Lori) was born to a criminal.  God made me more than a victim and more than a criminal's child.

See, God answers prayers in the affirmative.  Ask Him to make you how He envisions you - more than what the world has to offer.

The Israelites were promised land to settle in, when God delivered them out of Egypt.  This is the account of God making good on His promise to the tribe of Simeon.  They needed to destroy evil first, before they settled in.  This is how things worked before Christ came to save us from sin and its punishment.

I Peter 2 (NIV)

Summary:
Verses 1-3

Peter instructs us to get rid of the following:
-malice: a desire to inflict harm on another
-deceit: concealment or distortion of the truth for the purpose of misleading
-hypocrisy: a pretense of having a virtuous character, that one does not really possess
-envy: a feeling of discontent or covetousness for another's advantages, success, possessions, etc.
-slander: a malicious, false, and defamatory (giving a bad reputation) statement
We are to behave as newborn babies, craving spiritual milk, so that we may grow up in salvation.  We desire this once we have tasted and seen that God is good.

The Living Stone & a Chosen People
Verses 4-12

Christ was rejected by men, but was chosen by God.  Christ is precious to Him.  We are living stones, being built into a spiritual house in order to maintain a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices to God, through Christ.
" 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame.' " (Vs. 6b, Isaiah 28:16)
For believers, this stone is precious.  For non-believers:
" 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone.' " (Vs. 7b, Psalm 118:22)  and
" 'A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.' " (Vs. 8a, Isaiah 8:14)
They stumble, because they disobey the message, which is also their destiny.
We are a chosen people.  We have been set aside to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people belonging to God.  Our purpose is to declare praises of Him who called us out of darkness and into His wonderful light.  We were once not a people (we were scattered and alone) and now we are people of God.  We were once without mercy (before Christ died for us) and now we've received mercy.
Peter address us as friends and urges us, as strangers of this world, to stay away from the evil desires that war within our souls.  We are to live good lives among the pagans.  Although they accuse us of doing wrong, they see our good deeds and will glorify God on the day that He visits us.

Submission to Rulers & Masters
Verses 13-25

For the Lord's sake, we are to submit ourselves to the authorities instituted by man.  We are to obey the king, governors, presidents, etc., who have been commissioned to punish those that do wrong and commend those that do right.  It is God's will for us to do good.  By so doing, we will silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.
"Live as free (people), but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God." (Vs. 16)
We are to show proper respect to everyone, and love the brotherhood of believers.  We are to fear God and honor the king (keep in mind that kingdoms, not democracies were established in Peter's time; but, the same principles apply to us).
Slaves are to submit to their masters, with respect, to those that are good and considerate, and to those who are harsh.  It is commendable if a person bears up under the pain of unjust suffering, because they are conscious of God.  How is it commendible if you are beaten for doing wrong, and you endure it?  We are called to suffer as Christ suffered for us.
" 'He committed no sin and no deceit was found in His mouth.' " (Vs. 22, Isaiah 53:9)
They hurled insults at Him, but He didn't retaliate.  He suffered, but He made no threats.  Rather, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.  He bore our sins, in His body, on the tree, so we could die to sins and live for righteousness.  By His wounds, we have been healed.  We were like sheep, going astray, but now we have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls.

Lori's Thoughts:

I know I have been guilty of envy.  I envy the marriages, educational and career successes, nice clothes and other possessions that everyone else has.  I wonder when I will not have to worry whether or not my truck will break down on the highway, or when I'll have enough money to stop wearing hand-me-downs, or when I'll find the man I'm supposed to marry.  Here's the thing: God has never left me destitute.  Yeah, it's a clunker, but my truck has come to the rescue for half a dozen family members or friends that needed help hauling something.  I don't need to spend as much money on clothes, because I have sisters and cousins that I can trade with.  If I need to look cute quickly, I have hair, clothes, make-up, nails, shoes down, because of who I know.  Also, God saved me from an unhappy marriage last year, and for the first time in my life, I'm enjoying myself.  If you're having a hard time seeing things from a positive perspective, don't beat yourself up.  It took me 26 years to get to this point.  Keep seeking God, and you'll get there.

I like being compared to a precious stone.  It makes me feel pretty.  However, we aren't just for looks, we are destined to be a part of something magnificent.  It's kind of like you're a superhero, but you haven't yet discovered your powers.  You feel ordinary, and sometimes insignificant.  But, then Yoda or Master Shifu or Mr. Miyagi shows up and tells you that you're worth more.  Then you go through some grueling and painful training (that is life on Earth), then we become just as strong as our master (Jesus Christ) and we gain a kingdom (heaven).  Sounds pretty cool, right?  That, because it is cool!  Non-believers will bully us about it, but seek God for strength.  That's how Jesus made it.  My first instinct would be to punch them in the face, but where would that get me?  Certainly not on their good side.  How am I supposed to help people want to know Christ if I'm fighting with them?  We do lead them to Him by loving under all circumstances.  Don't let people walk all over you, but be quicker to show love than to burn bridges.

God loves us as we are, but loves us enough not to leave us this way.  We are being refined into precious living stones.  Now that we are spiritually connected with God, we won't be put to shame, because He will lift us up.  We have been set free, but we have a responsibility to live right.  We will suffer, but, remember, God is with us.  Christ also suffered, so He can relate to what we're going through.  He endured and now He reigns.  We must endure and we will reign with Him.

Lori's Thoughts:

Although God's people had fallen, He still had plans to redeem them.  That's why we have documents of the royal lineage.  When we fail, God prevails.  He redeems us when we've reached the point of having no redeemable qualities.  Israel and Judah certainly reached this point.  In the following chapters, we'll see how God preserved this lineage to connect to Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer.

  Lord, please squash my pride.
