The People in Jerusalem
Verses 1-34

The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon, because of their unfaithfulness.  These are the first people to resettle in their own property, in their own towns.  Some were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.  From Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh that lived in Jerusalem:

- Uthai* <- Ammihud* <- Omri* <- Imri* <- Bani... <- Perez* <- Judah
~ the Shilonites: +Asaiah and his sons
     ~ the Zerahites: Jeuel
     ~ 690 people from Judah
- Benjamites: Shallu* <- Meshullam* <- Hodaviah* <- Hassenuah
                     Ibneiah* <- Jeroham
                     Elah* <- Uzzi* <- Micri
                     Meshullam* <- Shephatiah* <- Reuel* <- Ibnijah
~ 956 people, all heads of their families
- Priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin, Azariah
~ Azariah* <- Hilkiah* <- Meshullam* <- Zadok* <- Meraioth* <- Ahitub: the official in charge of the house of God
     ~ Adaiah* <- Jeroham* <- Passhur* <- Malkijah
     ~ Maasai* <- Adiel* <- Jahzerah* <- Meshullam* <- Meshillemith* <- Immer
~ 1,760 people; able men, responsible for ministering in God's house
-Levites: Shemaiah* <- Hasshub* <- Azrikam* <- Hashabiah the Merarite
     ~ Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, Mattaniah
     ~ Mattaniah* <- Mica* <- Zicri* <- Asaph
     ~ Obadiah* <- Shemaiah* <- Galal* <- Jeduthun
~ Berekiah* <- Asa* <- Elkanah: they lived in the villages of the Netophathites
-Gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brothers
~ Shallum was the chief, stationed at the King's Gate on the East side, up to the present (when this book was written).
~ Levite gatekeepers: Shallum* <- Kore* <- Ebiasaph* <- Korah and the fellow gatekeepers from his family, the Korahites.  They were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the Tent (temple) as their fathers were responsible for guarding the entrance to the Lord's dwelling.
~ In earlier times, Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the gatekeepers and the Lord was with him.
~ Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper to the Tent of Meeting.
~ 212 gatekeepers at the threshholds: They were registerd by genealogy in their villages, assigned to positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer.  They and their descendants guarded the gates of the house of God, that is the Tent.  They were stationed on the four sides, East, West, North, and South.  Their brothers from other villages, on occasion, would come to share their duties for 7 days at a time.
~ The four principal gatekeepers were the Levites, entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.  They would spend the night stationed around His house, because they guarded it and were in charge of the key to open it each morning.
~ Some were in charge of the articles used in the temple service, counting what was brought in and what was brought out.  Others were assigned to care for the furnishings, other sanctuary articles, the flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices.  Some of the priests were in charge of mixing the spices.
~ Mattithiah the Levite, firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was in charge of baking the offering bread.  Some of the Kohathite brothers were in charge of preparing the bread set out every Sabbath.
~ The musicians, who were heads of the Levite families, stayed in rooms of the temple, exempt from other duties, because they were responsible for their work day and night.
These were all heads of the Levite families and chiefs, as listed in their genealogy.  They all lived in Jerusalem.

Lori's Thoughts:

God's people were separated from Him, so they lost what God had blessed them with - homes, livestock, horses, silver, gold, bronze, etc.  But, the story doesn't end here.  Some were able to return to their homes.  Maybe these people returned to their faith.  Either way, God was merciful.  He wants us to come back to Him so He can care for us.

I would think that the temple rituals would give the people a constant reminder of their relationship with God.  I know I'd be honored to be given a job specifically for Him, using a skill unique to me.  But, sometimes people lose the relationship with the ritual.  They believe the ritual is what will save them.  If this were true, there would be no need for Jesus Christ.  God wants your heart, not just a show.

We have been given Saul's lineage again.  This means, pay attention!  Something important is about to be shown.
