Summary:
The Two Witnesses
Verses 1-14
John was given a reed like a measuring rod. He was told to measure God's temple and altar, and to count the worshipers. He was to exclude the outer court, because it was given to the Gentiles, who will trample on the holy city for 42 months (3 1/2 years).
God will give power to His two witnesses. They will prophesy for 1,260 days (3 years, 5 1/2 months). They are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth. If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone that wants to harm them must die. They have the power to shut up the sky, so it won't rain when they are prophesying. They have the power to turn water to blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want. When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes from the Abyss will attack, overpower, and kill them. Their boides will lie in the street of the great city, figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where Christ was crucified.
For 3 1/2 days, men from every people, tribe, language, and nation will gaze on the witnesses' bodies and refuse them burial. The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over them and celebrate by sending each other gifts, because the two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth. After the 3 1/2 days, a breath of life from God will enter them. They will stand and strike terror in those who see them. They will hear a loud voice from heaven calling them up there, and they will ascend in a cloud, as their enemies look on. At that hour, a severe earthquake and 1/10 of the city collapsed. 7,000 people were killed. The survivors were terrified and gave glory to God of heaven. The 2nd woe has passed; the 3rd is soon to come.
The Seventh Trumpet
Verses 15-19
The 7th angel sounded his trumpet. There were loud voices in heaven saying that the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of Christ, who will reign forever. The 24 elders, seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God. They gave thanks to the Almighty, the One who is and was, because He took up His great power and had begun to reign. The nations were angry and His wrath came. The time had come for judging the dead, rewarding His servants the prophets and the saints, who revere His name, both small and great. The time had also come to destroy those who destroy the earth.
Then, God's temple in heaven opened. Within was seen the ark of His covenant. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.
Lori's Thoughts:
Jesus was taken to Pilate, the Roman governor, where he was tried and condemned to die. Rome is where the Vatican City resides. This chapter says that the two witnesses will be killed and lie in the streets of the great city, where Christ was crucified. Considering the prominence of Catholicism, I would say that the Vatican is a great city. Probably the great city written of in this chapter.
I think the great city is different from the holy city, on which the Gentiles will trample on. Jerusalem is where the temple was built, where David built his palace, and where Solomon built the temple for God, to house the ark of the covenant. I think, at this time, those who belong to God will be divided from those that do not, like the separation of the sheep and goats that Christ spoke of in Matthew 25. The Gentiles, those who don't believe in God, will trample on the holy city for 3 1/2 years. I don't know what this number really means. I do know that Jerusalem is a highly contested area. Israel's ownership is a huge point of contention. It is now in 3 pieces - Israel, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. Jerusalem is no longer considered the capital by the majority of the people. Tel Aviv is the functional capital. Jerusalem is a dangerous place to be, which is too bad, because I would have loved to visit. One thing's for sure. There definitely is some "trampling" going on there.
These two witnesses, they're represented by lampstands, which in the first chapter are defined as churches. They're also represented by olive trees. I know Jesus was at the Mount of Olives to pray before he was arrested. But, that's the only connection I made... So, churches, with prophets that have the power to control the weather, water, and earth. They can destroy it if they will. They also destroy those trying to harm them. Who are they? Are they the ones to prophesy about the demise of the wicked? Maybe that's why they're being attacked.
The beast from the Abyss (anyone else thinking of the balrog from Lord of the Rings?) will come out and kill the two witnesses. The wicked will gloat, but after 3 1/2 days (meaning?), God will breathe life back into them, and they will be brought up to heaven. Some will glorify God once they witness this and survive the resulting earthquake. Another chance to choose God and be saved?
The 7th angel will sound his trumpet again and declare that Christ's kingdom is (finally!!!) established. The elders will worship Him and declare that it is time for judgment, reward, and destruction. The heavenly ark of the covenant will be revealed and the forces of nature will wreak havoc. When Christ died, the earthly temple was ruined, because the old covenant was done away with. Christ is the final sacrifice. He will be declared as king to all when the heavenly temple of the new covenant is opened.

I Chronicles 28 (NIV)
Summary:
David's Plans for the Temple
Verses 1-21
David summoned all of Israel's officials to Jerusalem. This included the officers of the tribes; the commanders of the divisions for the king's service, of thousands, and of hundreds; the officials of the royal property and livestock, and of the palace; the mighty men and the brave warriors. David spoke to them as brothers and his people about his plans to build a resting place for the ark of the covenant, a footstool for God. God told him not to, because he was a warrior and had shed blood.
God had chosen the tribe of Judah, David's family from this tribe, and David from his father's sons to be king over Israel. God had given David many sons, had chosen Solomon to be the next king, and for him to be the one to build His house and courts. God would be Solomon's father and Solomon His son. He would establish Solomon's kingdom forever, if he never swerved from obeying His commands and laws, as Israel was doing now.
David charged Solomon, in the presence of Israel and of God, to obey the Lord, so that they could possess their promised land and give it as an inheritance to their descendants. David told Solomon to acknowledge and serve God wholeheartedly and with a willing mind.
"...acknowledge...God...and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever." (Verses 9-10)
David told Solomon to be strong and to do the work. He gave Solomon the plans for the temple: the portico, the buildings, the storerooms, the upper parts, the inner rooms, and the place of atonement (where people go in broken and leave rejoicing). The plans for the courts, surrounding rooms, treasuries of the temple and of dedicated things were put in David's mind by the Holy Spirit. David gave instructions for the divisions of priests and Levites, to do the work in the temple service, and for the articles to be used in the service. He designated the weight of gold and silver. Gold for: golden lampstands, lamps, tables for consecrated bread, gold dishes, and the chariot - the cherubim that spread their wings and shelter the ark of the covenant of the Lord. Pure gold for: forks, sprinkling bowls, and pitchers. Refined gold for: the altar of incense. Silver for: silver lampstands, lamps, silver tables, and silver dishes.
David had all of this in writing, inspired by the hand of God upon him. David told Solomon not to be afraid or discouraged, because God was with him.
"He will not fail you or forsake you..." (Verse 20b)
The divisions of priests and Levites, as well as the craftsmen were ready for the work. The officials and all the people would obey Solomon's every command.
Lori's Thoughts:
God knew that the Israelites would eventually break the covenant with Him, turning to idols, sexual immorality, etc. He sees all, the beginning, middle, and end. God didn't get exasperated and decide not to bother making a covenant with Israel. This covenant was not for God's sake, but for Israel's and for ours. Israel was God's chosen people for a while. After they turned on Him and lost everything, they would be able to look back and say that God is good. They could turn back to Him.
Now, it said that God would reject them forever if they forsook Him. If we look at the example of when God forsook Jesus Christ, when He was dying on the cross (because He had to, not because He wanted to), in order for sin and death to be defeated, we can see what forsaking is. To forsake is to do nothing when someone is dying and asking for your help. If we have this attitude towards God, to want nothing to do with Him, He must reject you forever. But, God gives us so many chances to change our minds. This is grace. He keeps offering us the free gift of salvation. In Revelation, John writes of the time that will come when it will be too late to accept this gift. I hope that you choose now whom you will serve. Yes, we must accept His salvation and choose to serve Him. Why both? Because the devil does all he can to lure us away from God and if we do not make God our Master, the devil will succeed!
But, remember, for now, God continues to speak to us and give us opportunities to come to Him. We just need to want to hear Him and we will hear Him. It's like when I listen to music. I listen for the guitar or violin or any stringed instrument amongst the voices and other instruments. God's voice is there amongst all the other voices in this world. Ask Him to help you recognize and listen to it.

Revelation 10 (NIV)
Summary:
The Angel and the Little Scroll
Verses 1-11
John saw another mighty angel descending from heaven. He was robed in a cloud with a rainbow above his head. His face was like the sun and his legs were like fiery pillars. He was holding a little scroll, laying open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land. He gave a loud shout, like that of a roaring lion. Then, the 7 thunders spoke. John was about to write what the thunders said, but a voice from heaven told him to seal it up and not write it.
The angel swore by Him who lives forever, who created the heavens, earth, sea, and all that is in them. The angel said, " 'There will be no more delay! But in the days when the 7th angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as He announced to His servants the prophets.' " (Vs. 6b-7)
The voice from heaven told John to take the little scroll from the angel. John asked for it and the angel told him to take it and eat it. It would taste like honey, but turn his stomach sour. John did so. John was then told that he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.
Lori's Thoughts:
Humans are organic. We're elemental, but not like angels. The angel that John saw was embodied by light, not tissue. He was clothed in water vapor and more light, not fabric. When we get new bodies in heaven, will we be more like this angel? Is that what Adam and Eve were like before they sinned?
I wonder what was written on this little scroll? Maybe the thunders revealed it, but only John was meant to know it. Maybe this chapter is meant to remind us that our understanding is minute compared to that of our Creator. God is mysterious. That is a humbling fact. God is good to remind us to be humble, to prevent us from falling as King Saul did.
According to this angel, whatever this mystery is, God will accomplish it just before the 7th angel blows his trumpet. I do not deign to guess as to what this could be. I'll just walk blindly in faith and know that anything God does is good and for our benefit.
Why did John need to eat the scroll? Why was it sweet in his mouth and sour in his stomach? Maybe the future prophecies will be easy to say, but difficult in nature? The last thing written in Chapter 9 was about those refusing to repent. The coming prophecies can't be good.
Let's end on a happier note: God loves us and wants us to reign with Him in heaven!
"Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him (died to sin by accepting Him as our Saviour & Master), we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him..." (II Timothy 2:11-12a)
" 'To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne.' " (Revelation 3:21)

This is the list of Israelites - the heads of families, commanders of thousands or hundreds, and their officers who served the king when on duty on their specified month. Each division had 24,000 men.
1st - Jashobeam, son of Zabdiel, the commander; a descendant of Perez
2nd - Dodai the Ahohite, the commander; Mikloth, the division leader
3rd - Benaiah, son of Jehoiada the priest; a mighty man among and over the Thirty; his son, Ammizabad, was the division leader

6th - Ira, son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, the commander

The King's Overseers
Verses 25-34
All these men were in charge of David's property:
- Azmavoth son of Adiel: royal storehouses
- Jonathan son of Uzziah: storehouses in outlying districts, towns, villages, and watchtowers
- Ezri son of Kelub: field workers who farmed the land
- Shimei the Ramathite: vineyards
- Zabdi the Shiphmite: produce of vineyards for the wine vats
- Baal-Hanan the Gederite: olive and sycamore-fig trees in the western foothills
- Josah: supplies of olive oil
- Shitrai the Sharonite: herds grazing in Sharon
- Shaphat son of Adlai: herds in the valleys
- Obil the Ishmaelite: camels
- Jehdeiah the Meronothite: donkeys
- Jaziz the Hagrite: flocks
- Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight, and a scribe.
- Jehiel son of Hacmoni cared for the king's sons.
- Ahithophel was the king's counselor, succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar
- Hushai the Arkite was the king's friend.
- Joab was the commander of the royal army.
Lori's Thoughts:
Wouldn't it be nice to serve for only 1 month per year, in the army? As someone who very nearly became an army wife, this seems much more bearable than 18-24 month-long absences. Now, the Israelites weren't exactly getting deployed thousands of miles away, but still, I'm sure they were away from home for a time when at war.
Now, David had been influenced by the devil (see Chapter 21) to count the fighting men. Why was this a sin that incurred the wrath of God? Because, it was an act of faith in mankind. This was a direct violation of the first commandment God gave us. (See Exodus 20: 3) God promised to multiply the Israelites, to make them into a great nation. Is God a liar? Of course not. So, why do we need to check up on His work? Just trust. (Something I'm still learning to do.)
It seems as if the Israelites had better job opportunities than we do. I got excited when he mentioned the overseer for the flock. Then, I realized that he mean sheep, not birds. Oh, well. Working in any form of animal husbandry works for me. Although, how cool would it be to go down in history as the king's friend? Pretty sweet position, huh? Well, Jesus says, " 'You are my friends if you do what I command.' " What does He command? " 'This is my command: Love each other.' " (John 15: 14, 17) How bad is that?
I know I want to be friends with the King.

The Trumpets (Continued)
Verses 1-21
The 5th angel sounded his trumpet. John saw a star that had fallen from the sky to earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he opened it, smoke arose, like that from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke. Locusts came out of the smoke onto the earth, with power like scorpions. They were told not to harm the grass, plants, or trees, but only those without the seal of God on their foreheads. They were given the power to torture, but not kill, for 5 months. The agony will be like that of a scorpion sting. Men will seek death, but death will elude them.
These locusts are like horses prepared for battle. They have something like crowns of gold on their heads. Their faces are like a human's, their hair like a woman's, and their teeth like a lion's. They have breastplates of iron. Their wingbeats are like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. Their tails and stingers are like those of scorpions.
The king of the locusts is the angel of the Abyss. His Hebrew name is Abaddon; his Greek name is Apollyon. Both names mean Destroyer.
The first woe is past; two are to come.
The 6th angel sounded his trumpet. John heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar before God. It told the 6th angel to release the 4 angels bounds at the river Euphrates. These angels are being kept ready for that very hour, day, month, and year. They will be released and will kill 1/3 of mankind. John heard the number of mounted troops: 200 million.
The horses and riders he saw in his vision were like this: their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow like sulfur. Their heads were like lions. Out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur, which are the plagues that will kill 1/3 of mankind. Their power is in their mouths and their tails. Their tails are like snakes, with heads that inflict injury.
The rest of mankind that were not killed still did not repent of the work of their hands. The did not stop worshiping demons, idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood. Their idols can't see, hear, or walk. They did not repent of their murders, magic arts, sexual immorality, or thefts.
Lori's Thoughts:
I've heard that the star that fell from the sky to earth is Satan. We know that stars symbolize angels, because Christ revealed that to John in the earlier chapters. Satan was Lucifer when he was an angel of God, but he rebelled and was banished to earth. All he wants is for us to go down with him, because he is filled with hate. So, he is given the key to the Abyss to unleash mayhem upon mankind.
Okay, these locusts that come out of the smoke from the Abyss aren't like any locusts I've ever heard of. The locusts on earth are like grasshoppers. They only bother us in the short periods when they swarm and eat up crops. The locusts of the Abyss seem huge and monster-like. But, those of us who are sealed by God will not be harmed by them. Remember when I was wondering whether or not we'd be in heaven before the 7th seal is opened? Well, it seems like we may not be. But, we will be protected, because we are sealed. (After reviewing my notes, now I think that we may be in heaven by that point. Either way, we do not need to worry about being affected by these woes.)
So far, there have been 7 seals. The 7th seal leads to the 7 trumpets, and the last 3 trumpets lead to the 3 woes. I imagine the trumpet blasts to be more like the bass war or warning blasts, rather than the soprano blasts that they use to announce the coming of royalty. It's a bit scary, but my God is bigger and He's got us.
So, the 6th angel is given the authority to release the 4 angels from the Euphrates. If I understand it, they have an army of 200 million to kill 1/3 of mankind. That is about 2.3 billion people, if it were to happen today. That number saddens my heart. What's worse is that it sounds like God gives the wicked another chance to repent and serve Him, but they refuse.
We cannot say that God is unmerciful or impatient or ungracious. He wants us to get out of this alive.
There is only freedom when we serve Him. It may sound counterintuitive, but it's true. Don't knock it until you try it. You'll be free to leave if you don't like it, but I think you'll love it. Take it from someone who has known brokenness and lacked love and support while growing up. There is so much better with my God. He can be yours too. Just ask.

The Gatekeepers
Verses 1-19
From the Korahites:
- Meshelemiah* <- Kore* <- Asaph
Meshelemiah -> Zechariah+, Jediael*, Zebadiah*, Jathniel*, Elam*, Jehohanan*, Eliehoenai*
There were 18 sons and relatives of Meshelemiah, all able men.
- Obed-Edom -> Shemaiah+, Jehozabad*, Joah*, Sacar*, Nethanel*, Ammiel*, Issachar*, Peullethai*
God had blessed Obed-Edom (with children).
Shemaiah -> Othni*, Rephael*, Obed*, Elzabad* - they were leaders in their father's family, because they were very capable men. Their relatives, Elihu and Semakiah, were also able men. They, their sons, and their relatives had strength to do the work. There were 62 descendants of Obed-Edom.
- Hosah the Merarite -> Shimri (the appointed, not born, first), Hilkiah*, Tabaliah*, Zechariah*
Hosah's sons and relatives numbered 13.
These are the divisions of the gatekeepers, through chief men, with the duties for ministering in the Lord's temple, as their relatives had. They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.
- East Gate: Shelemiah (Meshelemiah)
- North Gate: Zechariah (Mesh's son), a wise counselor
- South Gate: Obed-Edom
- the Storehouse by the South Gate: Obed-Edom's sons
- West Gate & Shalleketh Gate on the upper road: Shuppim and Hosah
There were posted guard next to guard: 6 Levites/day on the East; 4/day on the North; 4/day on the South, 2 at a time at the storehouse; 4 at the road, 2 at the court for the court to the West.
The Treasurers and Other Officials
Verses 20-32
These are the fellow Levites in charge of the treasuries of God's house and of the dedicated things.
- The descendants of Ladan, that is the Gershonites throughout Ladan, the heads of their families: Jehieli and sons, Zetham, and his brother Joel. They were in charge of the temple treasuries.
- Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites, Uzzielites:
+ Shubael, the descendant of Gershom son of Moses. He was the officer in charge of the treasuries.
+ Shubael's relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah, Jeshaiah, Joram, Zicri, Shelomith.
+ Shelomith and his relatives: in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were commanders of thousands or hundreds or other army commanders. Some of the plunder taken in battle was dedicated for the repair of the Lord's temple. Everything dedicated by Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, Joab son of Zeruiah, and all other dedicated things were left in their care.
+ Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were assigned duties away from the temple, as officials and judges over Israel.
+ Hebronites: Hashabiah and his relatives numbered 1700 able men. They were responsible in Israel, west of the Jordan, for all of the Lord's work and the king's service. According to their genealogical records, their chief was Jeriah.
During the 40th year of David's reign, a search was made in the records and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead. Jeriah had 2700 relatives, all able men and heads of their families. King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for everything pertaining to God and the king's affairs.
Lori's Thoughts:
This is an interesting chapter, because my position, although not officially named as such, has been described as a gatekeeper. I don't know if I'd categorize myself as one of those capable men, but I do know how to summon them.
So, these Israelite men were the bouncers for God and for their earthly king. With all the riches described in previous chapters, I'm sure they were quite needed. It's funny, though. Nowadays, most people that are filthy rich and heavily guarded are the greedy, miserly, or dishonest types, not the good guys. In my studies and personal life, I've found that God is the God of 180°s. He has a tendency to flip things around, that break the norms of life on earth. I find that this is why people don't understand or trust Him.
"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." (I Corinthians 2:14)
So, take heart. Your life may appear as a mess, but let go and let God. He'll flip it around. Don't see how that's possible? That's fine. Walk by faith, not by sight. He turned my life around. I'm no more or less special than you. We were both created by Him and He loves us just the same.

Revelation 8 (NIV)
Summary:
The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer
Verses 1-5
The Lamb opened the 7th seal and there was silence in heaven for half an hour. Then, the angels that stand before God were given 7 trumpets. Another angel, with a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. This angel was given much incense to offer to God, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. The smoke of the incense and the prayers went up before God from the angel's hand. The angel, then, filled the censer with fire from the altar and hurled it onto the earth. There resulted peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.
The Trumpets
Verses 6-13
The 7 angels prepared to sound their trumpets. The first was sounded. Hail and fire, mixed with blood, was hurled down upon the earth. 1/3 of the earth, 1/3 of the trees, and all the green grass were burned up.
The second was sounded and something like a huge mountain, ablaze, was thrown into the sea. 1/3 of the sea turned to blood, 1/3 of the sea creatures died, and 1/3 of the ships were destroyed.
The third was sounded and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky onto 1/3 of the rivers and springs of water. This star is named Wormwood, which means Bitterness. 1/3 of the waters turned bitter and many people died because of it.
The fourth was sounded and 1/3 of the sun, 1/3 of the moon, and 1/3 of the stars were struck and turned dark. 1/3 of the day and 1/3 of the night were without light.
John heard an eagle calling out, while flying in midair, " 'Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!' " (Verse 13b)
Lori's Thoughts:
After the 7th seal is opened, it seems like there will be a calm before an ever-worsening storm hits. The previous chapter speaks of the great multitude in heaven, with robes cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. Does this mean that we won't have to endure the woes of the 7 trumpets? Or will we be sealed, then gathered up to heaven after the woes are over? Maybe, since we're sealed, we won't be harmed by the woes.
[ Let me take this time to remind my readers that these are my human interpretations of the Word. Nothing can substitute a personal relationship with God, and you establish one by accepting His free gift of salvation, then studying the Bible and praying daily. So, don't take my word as law. ]
When the 5th seal was opened, John saw the souls of those slain for Christ under the altar. When the 7th seal was opened, an angel with the prayers of the saints offered them to God on the golden altar. I think this is the same altar. I think they're connected, but I'm not sure how.
Maybe the fire this angel hurled onto the earth created an opening from heaven to earth, for the woes to be thrown down upon the earth.
The 4th trumpet woe seems similar to the 6th seal. When the 6th seal is opened, the sun turns black, the moon red, and the stars fall. The 4th trumpet causes 1/3 of them to go dark. They're similar, but I'm not sure why.
Oh, limited human that I am. But, where we lack, God supplies. We walk by faith, not by sight. Jesus saves, not our human efforts, lest we should boast.
Okay, let's look at it this way:

Have you ever noticed how God never does the same thing twice? He created everything in 7 days. No one day was like another. He destroyed the earth by water, but promised never to do so again. The seven seals and trumpets may have some similarities, but they're not identical. Why do we try to ritualize our faith? Jesus deals with each of us as individuals. We should love individuals as well, not just the people that are the same as us, doing the same things as us. God doesn't want us to depend upon rituals. We are to depend upon Him.
Yes, I know, I go off on tangents, but it's all relevant. :)
