I Chronicles 19 (NIV)

Summary:

The Battle Against the Ammonites
Verses 1-19

Over time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son, Hanun, became king.  David showed Hanun kindness because Nahash had been kind to him.  David sent a delegation to express sympathy to Hanun, regarding the loss of his father.  David's men entered Ammon, and the nobles of the land told Hanun that David had sent his people to explore and spy on the land, to overthrow his kingdom.

Hanun had David's men shaved and their garments cut at the rears, then sent them off.  Someone informed David and he sent messengers to the men, instructing them to remain in Jericho until their beards grew back, so they wouldn't be humiliated in Jerusalem.  When the Ammonites realized they'd become a stench to David, they sent 1,000 talents (about 37 tons) of silver to hire 32,000 chariots and charioteers (drivers) from Aram Naharaim (Northwest Mesopotamia), Aram Maacah, and Zobah.  The king of Maacah and his troops also came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites gathered at their towns and moved out for battle.

David sent Joab out with the entire army.  The Ammonites drew battle formation at their city's enterance.    The kings were by themselves in the open country.  Joab noticed battle lines in front and behind him, so he selected some of the best Israelite troops and deployed them against the Arameans.  He deployed the rest, under his brother Abishai's command, against the Ammonites.  The brothers agreed to come to each other's aid if one of the sides was too strong for them.

"Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God.  The Lord will do what is good in His sight."  (Verse 13)

The Arameans fled before Joab.  The Ammonites saw this and fled into the city before Abishai.  Joab returned to Jerusalem.  The Arameans sent messengers to bring more of their people from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophach, the commander of Hadadezer's army.  When David heard this, he gathered all of Israel and crossed the Jordan River, advancing against Shophach.  They fought and the Arameans fled.  David killed 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, as well as their commander.  The vassals of Hadadezer made peace with David and became subject to him.  The Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.

Lori's Thoughts:

Sometimes our good deeds are rejected and we are hurt by those who are ignorant.  Had Hanun taken the time to discover the real reason David had sent his men, he might have gained a powerful ally.  Instead, he gained a powerful adversary.  God doesn't instruct us to succeed in winning people's hearts.  He instructs us to reach out to people.  This is obedience to our King.  Free will belongs to everyone and sometimes people ignore God knocking on their hearts.  God does not view it as your failure if they do not accept your kindness.  So, don't be discouraged when you are rejected by other people.  Be encouraged that you are accepted by God.

37 tons of silver.  Can you imagine?  It's amazing that silver is considered precious metal in our time.  Well, their money went to waste, because all they paid for was defeated by God's people.

Now, Joab knew that there was a possibility that they would be subdued by one of the armies - they were vast and strong.  However, he stepped out in faith and asked for God's will to be done.  This is what we must do.  Step out in faith to stand up for what we believe in.  We must ask for God's will to be done.  That might mean that we lose some battles.  But, take heart, God has victory over the war.  In the end, we will be with Him forever, because we've chosen to be His children.  So, if you're currently being beat up for following Christ, remember that God is always with you and will lift you up.

In this case, the Israelites were given the victory.  The Ammonites lost the allies they paid for.  Now, I know there is a lot of killing in the Old Testament.  In this battle, David killed 47,000 Arameans.  These are the wages of sin.  If Christ never came to redeem us, this is what life would be like - the killing off of sinners.  And, that is all of us.  But, thank God for grace, for salvation that is available to all through Christ alone.

Revelation 1

Summary:

*Words spoken by Jesus are written in red.

Prologue
Verses 1-3

This is the revelation of Jesus Christ.  God revealed it to Jesus to show His servants what will soon occur.  Jesus sent His angel to John to make this revelation known.  John testifies to all he saw - the word of God and Christ's testimony.

"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near."  (Verse 3)

Greetings and Doxology
Verses 4-8

John writes to the 7 churches in Asia.  He wishes them grace and peace from Him who is, was, and is to come.  This greeting is also being sent from the 7 spirits before His throne (I believe the 7 spirits are the same as the 7 angels he later writes about).  Also, this greeting is from Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth.  (It is such a comfort to know who the real Master is.)  Glory and power forever be to Him who loves us, freed us from our sins by His blood, and made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve God the Father.  Amen.

"Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him.  So shall it be!  Amen."  (Verse 7)

" 'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, 'who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.' " (Verse 8)  (That is, He is the First and the Last.  He has always been and always will be.  He is the I Am.  **See Exodus 3:14**)

One Like the Son of Man
Verses 9-20

John writes as our brother and companion in suffering, in the kingdom, and in patient endurance that belong to us in Jesus.  He writes from the island of Patmos, because of God's word and the testimony of Jesus.  (I believe he was exiled here because of his faith.)  On the Lord's day, he was in the Spirit.  He heard behind him a voice like a trumpet say, " 'Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.' " (Verse 11)

John turned to see the source of the voice and saw:
- 7 golden lampstands
- Someone 'like a son of man' **See Daniel 7:13**, dressed in a robe down to His feet, with a golden sash around His chest.  His head and hair were as white as wool or snow.  His eyes were like blazing fire, His feet like bronze glowing in a furnace.  His voice was like rushing waters.
- Seven stars in His right hand
- A sharp double-edged sword from His mouth
- His face was like the sun, shining in all its brilliance

John fell at His feet, as though dead.  The Son of Man placed His right hand on him and said, " 'Do not be afraid.  I am the First and the Last.  I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever!  And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
'Write, therefore what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.  The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.' "  (Verses 17b-20).

Lori's Thoughts:

I was quite intimidated on starting this book.  I felt that I'm not strong enough in my faith or wise enough to handle the contents of Revelation.  But, these are thoughts from the devil in an attempt to keep me ignorant.  God has shown us what it will be like soon before He returns.  He warns us about the traps of this world, but promises to protect us if we choose to serve Him.  Everyone serves something - the latest phone or car, a position of power or money, celebrities (have you seen all the hype on Charlie Sheen?), video game success, etc.  Don't delude yourself into thinking you serve no one.  If you choose to serve the Lord, He will give you the peace of mind and endurance to make it out of this earth alive.  Even if you die of illness or old age, you will be made alive in Christ when He returns.

As I was walking to the train station, this morning, I passed by a small brook.  The water sang as it moved quickly over the cobblestones.  I told God that I love this sound and He reminded me that, in the Bible, it says that God's voice resembles the sound of running water.

As I opened Revelation and read the first chapter, I had to ask God, twice, to remove evil spirits from interfering with my studies.  Normally, I need to ask once, if at all.  I think the devil was working extra hard to distract me.  Well, my God is greater.  As I read about John's experience with the Son of Man, that is Jesus, he described Him as sounding like running water.  This is one way that God told me He was with me and wanted me to read this book.  Trust me, I considered doing another Chronicles chapter, because I didn't feel "ready" for Revelation.  But, He encouraged me to dive in.

A second sign that He is with me is when I came across the verse that references the book of Daniel.  I decided to look it up and my hand turned right to the book.  Coincidence?  I think not.  I think God was saying, yes, I want you to study this.

Hey, guess what?  He's real.  If you seek Him, you'll find Him.

"But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul."  (Deuteronomy 4:29)

" 'If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.' "  (II Chronicles 15: 2b)

" 'For everyone who ask receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.' "  (Matthew 7:8)

In verse 7, it says that the people of the earth will mourn when they see Him.  These are the ones that did not choose God.  We who have chosen Him are children of God, not people of the earth.  The people of the earth will see themselves, finally, as people in need of salvation from sin.  They will mourn because it is too late to act.  Don't wait until then to decide who you want to live for.

I imagine I would faint if I saw Jesus in all of His glory.  I wonder how a human body can contain Him?...

Jesus told John not to be afraid and He identified Himself as Christ.  This is how we can test the spirits.  Those that proclaim that Jesus is Lord are of God.  They are also the ones that will tell us not to fear (but, this isn't as important as the first statement).  I think demons want us to be afraid of them, because they feel empowered.  Fear God alone.  The thing I detest the most is the absence of Him.  I'd rather be dead than separated from my Father.

I thought the symbolism of this book would be lost on me.  I love how Jesus plainly states what the seven lampstands and seven stars are.  In the chapters to come, we'll learn more about the seven churches and the seven angels' messages to the churches.

This is going to be fun.  :)

I Chronicles 18 (NIV)

Summary:

David's Victories
Verses 1-13

Over time, David defeated the Philistines.  He took Gath and its villages from them.  He defeated the Moabites, who paid tribute to him as his subjects.  He fought Hadadezer king (King Had) of Zobah, all the way to Hamath, when King Had was trying to establish control along the Euphrates.  David captured from Zobah - 1,000 chariots; 7,000 charioteers; 20,000 foot soldiers; and he hamstrung all but 100 horses.  The Arameans of Damascus came to King Had's aid.  David struck down 22,000 of them.  He put garrisons (troops) in Damascus and the Arameans paid tribute to him as his subjects.

"The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went." (Verse 6b)

David took from King Had to Jerusalem - the gold shields from Had's officers, and a lot of bronze from Had's towns of Tebah and Cun.  This bronze was later used by Solomon to make the bronze Sea, the pillars, and other bronze articles for the Lord's temple.

Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated King Had and his army.  Tou sent his son Hadoram to greet and congratulate David, because King Had had been at war with Tou.  Hadoram brought articles of gold, silver, and bronze.  David dedicated all articles from Hadoram, Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek to God.

Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.  He put garrisons (troops) in Edom and the Edomites became subject to David.

"The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went."  (Verse 13b)

David's Officials
Verses 14-17

**Author's Note: "s." is short for "son of".

David reigned over Israel, doing what was just and right for his people.

Joab s. Zeruiah - head of the army
Jehoshaphat s. Ahilud - recorder
Zadok s. Ahitub & Ahimelech s. Abiathar - priests
Shavsha - secretary
Benaiah s. Jehoiada - leader of the Kerethites & Pelethites
David's sons - chief officials at the king's side

Lori's Thoughts:

David was able to do mighty things, because he devoted his loyalty and his life to God.  All enemies that rose up against him, David defeated by God's hand, might, and power.  We can do this too.  If we dedicate our lives to serving God, you can be sure we will be attacked time and time again, by the devil, in various ways.  However, because we are devoted to God, He will give us victory in everything we do for Him.

Now, David wasn't perfect and neither are we.  Sometimes, we mess up.  Sometimes we forget that we need God, because things are going so well.  If something goes wrong, it is not because our Father has abandoned or forgotten us.  It is because we are in danger of slipping away from Him and He is calling our attention to retighten our grip on Him.

Although David didn't build the temple, he helped by winning over the bronze that would be used to make some of the temple's articles.  God let David be a part of this beautiful thing he had had in mind.  That and his son built it, which was also an honor to David.  (See I Chronicles 17 for the background story.)

Sometimes we bless others by our actions, indirectly.  David defeated Tou's enemy and won Tou over as an ally.  They didn't mention it in the Bible, but I'd like to think that souls were won over for God because of David's example.  Maybe you and I can do the same - stand up against evil and, thus, help protect others and bring them to God.

I don't know about you, but I long for the day when our just and right Ruler is established among us, as our King.  He is in my heart.  I want Him as King of my world - a world without evil.

Jude (NIV)

*Author's Note* - In this entry, I've combined the summary and my thoughts.  My thoughts will be written in purple.  Translations of Jesus' words are written in red.

Verses 1-2

Jude, a servant of Christ and brother of James, writes to those that have been called, who are loved by the Father and kept by Jesus Christ.  It is through Christ alone that we persist in our faith and remain in His grace.  The blood covers us in our sinful form and this is how the Father can look at us and love us.  He loves us as individuals, but abhors (hates) sin.  We must have Jesus to be with the Father.  Is Christ your Savior?  If so, is He the Master of your life?

Jude wishes us mercy, peace, and love in abundance.  A sign of goodness is when one wishes that others experience the fruit of the Spirit and the greatness of God.  I wish this for you.  Truly and deeply.  God is awesome!

The Sin and Doom of Godless Men
Verses 3-16

Make no mistake, women can also be godless.  Jude wanted to write about our salvation, but felt (was led by the Holy Spirit) that he should write to argue for the faith once entrusted to the saints.  There are certain men about whom condemnation was written about long ago (they rejected God and gave their lives to the devil a long time ago; they are without grace, because they have rejected it)These men or women can still accept Christ and turn their lives around.  However, time is of the essence.  These men have secretly slipped among us.  They have turned God's grace into a license for immorality and deny Christ as our only Sovereign and Lord.  Jude reminds us that the Lord delivered His people out of Egypt, later destroying non-believers.  The angels who abandoned their positions of authority and their home - God keeps them in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.  Similarly, Sodom and Gomorah, and their surrounding towns, gave themselves to sexual immorality and perversion.  They are an example of those that suffer the punishment of eternal fire.  I believe this means that they're forever destroyed.

In the same way, these dreamers pollute their bodies, reject authority, and slander celestial beings.  Dreamers live mostly in their heads.  They're delusional, unaware that by neglecting to focus their thoughts on God, they allow an opening in their minds for the devil to place evil thoughts.  Beware of clearing out your mind; it must be filled with thoughts of God to block out the evil one!  How?  Pray; speak to your Lord!

" 'When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it.  Then it says, "I will return to the house I left."  When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.  Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there.  And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.  That is how it will be with this wicked generation.' " (Matthew 12: 43-45)

The archangel Michael, when disputing with the devil about Moses' body, didn't dare use slander, but said 'The Lord rebuke you!'  These men (the dreamers) speak abusively about what they don't understand.  They only understand their instincts, like animals, which destroys them.

The devil is always petitioning to God against us.  Read Job 1:6-12.  Here are a few exerpts:

" 'Does Job fear God for nothing?' Satan replied.  'Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?...But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.' "

We are not powerless against this, however; we can pray to petition for ourselves, acknowledging your acceptance of Christ's grace, his blood which covers our sin.  Remember, though, that if we continue in sin, we will no longer be in God's favor.  Continue in faith and God will protect you.  (That's the what the "hedge" refers to in the verse above.)

Woe to these men.  They follow in the ways of Cain, of Balaam's error, and Korah's rebellion.  These men are blemishes in your love feasts (maybe wedding receptions or your enjoyment of the fruit of the Spirit), feeding only themselves.  They are clouds without rain, blown by the wind (they have no root).  They are like autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted.  They are twice dead.  " 'Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.' "  (Matthew 7:19)  They are like wild waves, foaming up in their shame.  They are wandering stars - the blackest darkness is reserved for them forever.

Enoch was the 7th from Adam.  He prophesied regarding these men - God will come with thousands of holy ones to judge everyone.  They will convict the ungodly of their actions and harsh words against Him.  These men are grumblers and faultfinders, follow evil desires, boast about themselves, and flatter others for their own advantage.

A Call to Persevere
Verses 17-23

Jude calls us friends.  He tells us to remember what Christ's apostles foretold - in the last times, there will be scoffers that follow their own ungodly desires.  They divide us, follow their natural instincts, and do not have the Spirit.  "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit." (Verse 20)  Stay in God's love as you wait for Christ's mercy to bring us into eternal life.  Maintain a continuous relationship with Christ.  Seek Him through Bible study and prayer, so that when evil throws its grappling hook at you, you will stand firm on your Rock.

Be merciful to those that doubt.  Snatch others from the fire and save them (take as many people as you can Home with you by setting an example on how to live as Jesus did and by praying for them).  Show mercy with fear to others, hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh and if any has come out of a life devoted to evil - all objects use to serve him must be destroyed.

A personal example - I used to listen to rock, especially as a teenager, because my life was broken and I was angry.  I'm going to write something that many will be frustrated with...  I threw out my Disturbed, Godsmack, Blue October, Mythos, etc. CDs.  Basically, anything that led to entrancement, clearing of the mind, and thus a doorway for the devil.  I asked God to bind these doorways and cast evil from my home.  Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you in such matters.  Know that the casting out of evil from your life must be done if Christ is to be your master.  This is mercy mixed with fear.

Doxology (Praise to God)
Verses 24-25

To Him who is able to keep us from falling and present us before His glorious presence, without fault and with great joy.  Christ is pleased to bring you to God's throne and ask "Can I keep her/him?"  He love us and wants us!  Even if we're wretched!  He can mend us, after we accept Him.  It is impossible to mend ourselves and God never asks us to.  We work together.

To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Christ, now and forever.  Amen.

Now that's praising God.

I Chronicles 17 (NIV)

Summary:

God's Promise to David
Verses 1-15

Once David was settled in his palace, he told Nathan the prophet that he didn't feel right living in a palace of cedar while the ark of the covenant was in a tent.  Nathan told him to do whatever he had in mind, because God was with him.

That night, God spoke to Nathan to tell David that he was not the one to build Him a dwelling place.  Since the emancipation of the Israelites, God had moved from place to place, with the Israelites, never asking their leaders (known then as the judges), who were commanded to be shepherds over Israel, why they hadn't built Him a house of cedar.  God had taken David from the pastures and following his flock of sheep to become ruler of Israel.  God was always with him, cutting off his enemies.  Now, God would make David's name as one of names of the greatest men on earth.  He would provide a place for Israel to be rooted, to have a home and no longer be disturbed or oppressed by the wicked as they had been before.  God would subdue David's enemies.  He would build this house for David.

After David would rest with his fathers, God would raise up David's son as a successor and establish his kingdom.  David's son would build God's house.  He and God would be like father and son.  God would never remove His love from him, unlike David's predecessor (Saul).  God would set him over His house and kingdom forever.  He would forever establish the throne of David's son.

Nathan reported everything God said to David.

David's Prayer
Verses 16-27

King David went in and sat before God, asking who was he and his family that God had taken him so far?  God didn't stop there; He had spoken about the future of David's house.  God looked at David as if he was the most exalted of men.  David was at a loss as to what more to say to God for honoring him.  For his sake and for God's will, the Lord did these great things and made great promises.

There is no one like God and He is the only God.  There is no other nation like Israel, the one nation God redeemed for Himself, to make His name known, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before them.  God made Israel His own people forever and He was their God.  Let God's will for David's house be done, to glorify His name, so others will know He is God over Israel and David's house, and so that God's servant would be established forever.

God had revealed His plan for the house of the ark.  David now had courage to pray to God.  He praised Him - He is God, He made good promises to His servant, was pleased to bless David's house and continue his line forever.  David would forever be blessed.

Lori's Thoughts:

If we are ever inspired to do something for God, we must consult with Him first.  His will, not ours be done.  David wanted to do a beautiful thing for God.  God was establishing all the tribes of Israel in their promised land.  David wanted to establish a permanent place for the ark of the covenant to dwell.

Through the prophet, Nathan, God told David that this was not meant for him to do.  However, God showed David how He had blessed him and would continue to bless him.  God would always show His love to David and his family; He would make David's name great (we all know him, and the City of David [Jerusalem] still exists), and David's line would be the royal line forever.  I know lineage was very important to families of that time, so this was a high honor for David.

David was an obedient servant of God.  Because of his devotion to God, God blessed him beyond what he asked for or imagined.  David was so humble in his response - "Who am I, that you think so highly of me?"

"All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble'." (I Peter 5:5b, Proverbs 3:34)

Although God's answer to David was no, He made sure that David understood why.  It wasn't because David wasn't valued.  Sometimes God will tell us no when we desire to do something for Him.  Sometimes God does it for us, as He took over the building of the house for David.  Whatever His will is, submit to it.  He sees the bigger picture, which we can't.  We must trust that He knows all.  Watch how He works everything out and blesses you, His servant, beyond what you can imagine.  Why?  Because, despite our minuteness compared to the universe, He loves us.  That's enough for me.

I love David's response to God's promises:
-Humility
-He praise God, acknowledging Him as the One, which is what God wants all people to do.  This is how we show Him love, by worshiping Him alone.
-He spoke of how God had blessed Israel and thanked Him.
-Let God's will be done -
1) To glorify His Name
2) So others could know His greatness
3) So David's line would be blessed forever
**Notice the order: God > others > himself

This is how our priorities should be - honor God, lead others to Him, then receive your blessing.

David grew in his relationship with the Almighty.  He had courage to pray, to talk with God.  Try a relationship with Him and see how He fortifies your mind and soul.

III John (NIV)

Summary:

Verses 1-14

John writes this letter to Gaius, whom he loves in the truth.  He prays for Gaius' good health, that everything goes well with him, and that his soul progresses.  John is filled with joy because of the brothers' report of Gaius' faithfulness to them, although he does not know them.  The brothers told the church of Gaius' love.

John encourages Gaius to send the brothers on their way in a manner worthy of God.  It was for His Name's sake that the brothers went out, receiving no help from the pagans.  Therefore, we should be hospitable to the people of faith so that we can work together for the truth.

John had written to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with the apostles.  If John visits, he will call attention to Diotrephes' malicious gossip, refusal to welcome the brothers, for stopping those that want to welcome them, and kicking these welcomers out of the church.  John writes that Gaius should imitate good and not evil.  Those that do good are from God.  Those that do evil have not seen God.

Demetrius is well spoken of, even by the truth itself.  The apostles approve of him, and Gaius knows that the apostles' testimony is true.

John has more to say, but prefers to do so face to face.  He wishes Gaius peace.  The friends also send their greetings, and John tells Gaius to greet the friends there by name.

Lori's Thoughts:

Like John, we should pray for the progress of our souls, that we may continue to grow in faith through the Holy Spirit.  We should help take care of each other, because we know that those that are not of God reject those that are.  If we don't, no one will.

"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it."  (Hebrews 13:2)

When I was a teenager, there was a homeless and mentally handicapped man that visited our church once.  The elders were quick to kick him out, but quick to welcome the rich.  My mother believes that this man was an angel, sent to test us.  As a church, we failed.

You will know whom people serve by how they love others.  We should imitate those that feed, clothe, house, heal, and pray for others.  This is how we love.

" 'Then the King will say to those on His right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."..."I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."' " (Matthew 25: 34-36, 40)

You can be sure others are watching what you do.  If you're right with God, this shouldn't make you feel guilty, but rather responsible.  We should set an example for others.

" 'You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.' "  (Matthew 5: 14-16)

I Chronicles 16 (NIV)

Summary:

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
Verses 1-6

The Israelites brought the ark to the tent David had pitched for it.  David presented burnt and fellowship offerings to God.  He then blessed the people in the name of the Lord.  David gave every man and woman a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins.  (I want some!)  David appointed some Levites to minister before the ark, to make petition, and to give thanks and praise to God.

Chief: Asaph - played the cymbals
2nd: Zecheriah - played the lyre or harp (I believe)
The Rest: Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel (another Jeiel?)        - played the lyres and harps
Priests: Benaiah & Jahaziel - blew the trumpets at regular intervals before the ark of the covenant of God

David's Psalm of Thanks
Verses 7-43

(David's song of praise is quite eloquent and beautiful.  I've summed up the meaning, but encourage you to read how he expresses gratitude to God through poetry in the actual chapter.)

-Thanks God because we can call on His name.
-Praises God, attributing  to Him glory and strength.  Those that seek Him will rejoice.  He produces wonders, miracles, and judgments.  He always remembers His covenant - to provide Israel the land of Canaan as an inheritance.  The Israelites wandered in search of their land, but God prevented anyone from harming them or His prophets.
-Encourages us to praise Him.  We should sing, proclaim His salvation, declare His glory and action in our lives.
-Praises God, calling Him great.  God is to be feared above all gods, all idols.  Our God made the heavens.  He has splendor, majesty, strength, joy, and glory.  "Tremble before Him, all the earth!" (Verse 30a)  He firmly established the earth.  Let heaven and earth rejoice.  Let the nations say that the Lord reigns!  The sea, the fields, and the trees of the forest will sing for joy to God, because He comes to judge the earth.  (Imagine worshiping God with all of heaven and with nature - euphoria is what comes to mind.)
-"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever." (Verse 34)  (Song for today - "Forever" by Chris Tomlin...listen to it on YouTube.)
-Tells us to cry out to God for salvation, for deliverance, so we can give thanks to His holy name and we can glory in His praise.

The people responded with "Amen" and "Praise the Lord".  David then went to minister before the ark, according to each day's requirements.  He went to the Lord's tabernacle (house of worship) at the high place in Gibeon.  He presented burnt offerings every morning and evening in accordance with the Law.  With him were Heman, Jeduthan, and those chosen by name to give thanks to God.  Heman and Jeduthun sounded the trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments for the sacred song.  The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate.  Then, everyone went home and David went to bless his family.

Lori's Thoughts:

Imagine what life must have been like in David's day.  I wish more worship services were like his.  Taking time to remember why you have a relationship with God.  Tell Him how He's awesome.  Recommit yourself to Him.  Make a joyful noise and celebrate!

I attended several churches that sang mournful hymns, the pastor told us what not to do, but never what we should do, and nobody interacted with each other.  We sat and listened, then went home.

Currently, I attend a service that is more like what David had.  They encourage us to greet each other, we rock out in praise songs, with drums, guitars, keyboards, and saxophones, and the message is interactive.  Afterwards, we can pray with each other or just talk.  Also, they have ministries for the homeless and for prisoners.  They actually pay attention to God's second commandment (the New Testament one) to love others.  I love my new "church".  It's called Gateway Fellowship, in Takoma Park, Maryland.  If you're interested, here's the website:  http://mygatewayfellowship.com/  Also, you can hear about the program and the musical artists that we have come once a month: WGTS 91.9 FM.

I think this chapter also provides a great example on how to pray:
-Petition - lay down your sins
-Thanksgiving - be grateful for what God has brought you through, whether it's high or low points
-Praise - tell God how awesome He is
-Tremble - pay your respects.  Don't forget with whom your speaking - the Almighty God, Creator of All, Destroyer of Evil.

Also, it is important to share the Holy Spirit with the people God has placed in your life.  David sets this example when He blesses the Israelites, then he goes home to bless his family.  Who have you blessed lately?
