Summary:
The Capture of Rabbah
Verses 1-3
Springtime is when the kings went out to war. Joab led the Israelite army, laid waste to Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. David remained in Jerusalem. Rabbah was left in ruins after Joab's attack. David went and took King Molech's crown, which was 1 talent (~75 pounds) of gold, set with precious stones. The crown was placed on David's head (and then he died of a broken neck...that was a joke. I couldn't help it...) They plundered the city, consigned the people to labor, with saws, iron picks, and axes. This was done to all of the Ammonite towns. Then, David and his army returned to Jerusalem.
War With the Philistines
Verses 4-8
Over time, war broke out with the Philistines, at Gezer. There were three battles: Israel vs. Philistia -
1. Sibbecai the Hushathite vs. Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaites
Israel - 1; Philistia - 0
2. Elhanan son of Jair vs. Lahmi, brother of Goliath the Gittite, with spear and shaft like a weaver's rod
Isreal - 2; Philistia - 0
3. Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother vs. a Philistine with 6 fingers & toes on each hand & foot
Israel - 3; Philistia - 0
All Philistines were descendants of Rapha from Gath. They all fell at the feet of David and his men.
Lori's Thoughts:
First of all, I'm amazed that anyone can stand to have 75 pounds on their head for any amount of time. That's the equivalent of a large child! I'm sure it was a beautiful crown, but really?! I heard that Adam was like 12 feet tall (*there is no Biblical evidence of this, though), so maybe he could have handled such a crown. But, David was alive post-flood, which I heard resulted in people growing to be less tall (*also, no Biblical evidence). Either way, that's impressive.
Secondly, I think the ruin of Ammon is a good example of how God's prophecy for David's rule came true. "You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery." (Psalm 2:9) This reminds me of the prophecy about Jesus. "The Lord says to my Lord: 'Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'" (Psalm 110:1) "But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God. Since that time He waits for His enemies to be made His footstool..." (Hebrews 10:12-13).
I don't agree with forced labor in our day. But, our world works differently now than in David's time. We have individual relationships with God. There's no longer a holy nation versus evil nations. God isn't asking us to do what David did. We are to fight against the spiritual enemy, that is Satan and his demons. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." (Ephesians 6:12) This doesn't mean that evil reigns in heaven, but that the devil is not bound to earth. He can travel to heaven. He does so to petition for our demise. (See the book of Job.)
The second half of the chapter symbolize our spiritual warfare. As we grow in faith, the devil sends demons to attack us. We stand and conquer with God. The devil then sends bigger and uglier things our way. But, we have God who is the biggest and scariest contender. His name alone makes the demons flee. "The seventy-two returned with joy and said, 'Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.'" (Luke 10:17) "He replied...'However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.' " (Luke 10:19-20) Don't take His name lightly.
If things seem to be going worse - financial crises, health problems, car issues, etc. - don't let anyone make you think it's because you lack faith or that it's a punishment for your sins. It may be that you have such great faith as to piss off the devil. Stand! You know who has the victory and He's on your side! Remember, if you feel like you're not moving with God, standing with God is a victory in itself.

Revelation 2 (NIV)
Summary:
To the Church in Ephesus
Verses 1-7
Description of Christ: Holds 7 stars in His right hand, walks among 7 golden lampstands
Praise: For their deeds, hard work, perseverance; do not tolerate wicked men; tested and found false apostles; endured hardship for His name; hate Nicolaitan practices, as He does
Warning: Had forsaken their 1st love - must remember the height from which they fell; must repent and return to their initial deeds, or He will remove their lampstand
Reward: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 7a); to them that overcome - He will give the right to eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God
To the Church in Smyrna
Verses 8-11
Description of Christ: The First and the Last, died and came back to life
Praise: Despite their afflictions and poverty, they are rich
Warning: He knows the slander of those who say they're Jews, but are a synagogue of Satan (that is, these "Jews" were slandering the Church of Smyrna); don't fear what they're (Smyrna) about to suffer - the devil will put some of them in prison to test them; some will be persecuted for 10 days
Reward: Be faithful, even to the point of death; He will give you the crown of life; "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 11a); to them that overcome - they won't be hurt at all by the 2nd death
To the Church in Pergamum
Verses 12-17
Description of Christ: Has a sharp, double-edged sword
Praise: They live where Satan has his throne, but remain true to God's name; they did not renounce their faith, even when His faithful witness, Antipas, was put to death in their city, where Satan lives
Warning: Some follow the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and to practice sexual immorality; some follow the practices of the Nicolaitans; repent or He will soon come and fight them with the sword of His mouth
Reward: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 17a); to them that overcome, He will give them some of the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the individual receiving it
To the Church in Thyatira
Verses 18-29
Description of Christ: Son of God; eyes like blazing fire, feet like burnished bronze; searches our hearts and minds and will repay us according to our deeds
Praise: Knows their deeds, love, faith, service, perseverance, and that they're now doing more than what they had initially done
Warning: They tolerate Jezebel, the self-proclaimed "prophetess", who misleads His servants into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols. God had given her time to repent, but she is unwilling. He will cast her onto a bed of suffering. Those that commit adultery with her will suffer intensely, unless they repent. He will strike Jezebel's children dead, then all the churches will know that He is the searcher of hearts.
Reward: Those that do not hold to her teachings and haven't learned Satan's so-called "deep secrets", God will not impose more burdens on them. Hold on to what you have until He returns. Those that overcome and do His will, He will give authority over the nations, as He has received authority from His father. " 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; He will dash them to pieces like pottery...' " (Psalm 2:9; Verse 27a) He will also give them the morning star. "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 29)
Lori's Thoughts:
Another Summary
Description of Jesus Christ: He holds the 7 stars and walks among the 7 golden lampstands. These are the 7 angels and 7 churches, respectively (see Revelation 1 posting). He has a sharp, double-edged sword in His mouth. This is a symbol of the Word of God. "Take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians 6:17). He is the First and the Last. "In the beginning was the Word...and the Word was God." (I John 1:1 New American Standard Version) "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:20b) Christ died and came back to life. He is the Son of God. His eyes are like blazing fire and His feet are like burnished bronze. He is the searcher of hearts and the repayer (I just made that word up) of deeds.
We have chosen salvation, but we must reap what we have sown. "The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." (Galatians 6:8) If we have opened doorways for the devil to have access to us, then ask God to close those doorways, after you have accepted Him as your Savior and Master. You can be sure the devil will be pissed off and attack you for shutting him out. Ask God for the strength to stand and accept the consequences of your previous actions.
I opened doorways for the devil through the occult - horoscopes, studying my astrological sign, having my tarot cards read, listening to rock music used in devil worship (even though this is not what I was consciously doing). The Holy Spirit instructed me to destroy all articles associated with the occult - CDs, books, writings on astrology, DVDs, and a t-shirt with my sign on it. I then asked God to bind the demons, expel them, and close any doorways to the devil. I will not go into the details, but I have been attacked, spiritually, by demons, as recently as two days ago. But, I know who holds me and sustains me. He has always seen me through and will see me through in the future, for as long as I desire and choose Him. (If you would like further reading about expelling sin from your life, I encourage you to read "Prepare for War" by Rebecca Brown ***only if you are already reading the Bible daily.)
Praise: What Jesus praised the churches for are what we should practice now. We should work hard and persevere in our faith. We should not tolerate wickedness, such as being around people that sin, even if we're not participating. "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." (Galatians 5:19-25)
We should test the spirits. Don't believe everyone claiming to know Jesus. Christ Himself just told us who He is. Don't be deceived by anyone claiming He is anything more or less. Although we live in the world, Satan's domain, we must stay true to our Father in heaven by what we do and believe. Keep your faith, especially when things go wrong. Love, serve others, and grow in faith.
Warning: Likewise, we can learn from these churches about what to avoid. We should not forget where we started from, becoming prideful and thinking that we're better than other sinners. We should not be involved in idolatry or sexual immorality. We shouldn't fear persecution, because Christ has promised to be with us always. We should be wary to not be deceived by those claiming to be prophets or apostles. This is why we must test the spirits. If we do not repent of our sinful ways, we will suffer and be struck down by Christ. He is patient, even with Jezebel. If we reject Him, as she did, we will pay the price - death.
Reward: This is what we have to look forward to, if we stick with Christ through the end. We will be with God in paradise and eat from the tree of life. That is, we will live forever. We will not experience the second death. (See I Thessalonians 4:13-18) We will also eat manna, which is the bread of heaven. (See Exodus 16:15) We will receive a new name on a white stone and a crown of life. For our perseverance, Christ will hold back more persecution, to help us stand. We will receive authority over nations and the morning star. (I'm not sure about the meaning of these two, but they're from God and I know He is good, so what He gives us is good.)
Other Thoughts
I googled the Nicolaitans, but what I found I cannot verify as fact. These are educated opinions. The English meaning of this Greek word is "conquerors of the lay people". In other words, those in authority over regular Joes and Janes. This may refer to the hierarchy of some churches, that place people in authority to mediate between them and God. Christ is the only mediator, since He abolished the old covenant (the one given in Moses' time) when He died on the cross. Another interpretation of the Nicolaitans are people that practice sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols.
Sexual immorality is a main theme in this chapter. Now, sex is a gift from God. God gave Eve to Adam, because He knew Adam was lonely. Adam and Eve had sex as husband and wife. Sexual immorality is anything else aside from how God intended it to be. If you pay attention to the news, you can see how the devil is using demons of lust to attack Christians. It has now become a joke that priests and children are a bad combination. [The devil wants you to believe that you will experience no pleasure with God. Not so! If anyone has interest in our well-being and enjoyment, it is God! For example, I heard this great analogy a little while ago - God did not have to give us taste buds when He created us. We don't need to taste to nourish our bodies. But, He wanted us to enjoy the food He provided for us, so He gave us the ability to taste.] The demons of lust are the most prevalent. Surrender your temptations to Christ. He will fulfill you in His time and in His way. "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21)
Another theme is the repetition of the verse: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." We need to train ourselves to listen to God's voice. I am learning how to differentiate between my voice, the negative thoughts the devil puts in my head, and the instructions God gives me. During my Bible studies, or throughout my day (during which I talk to God as a friend), ideas occur to me and they just make sense. I don't hear a voice or have visions, I just know. The problem I have is when I think something and I'm not sure where it came from. I'm pretty sure those are my thoughts, which are confusing. I think I've gotten pretty good at recognizing the devil's thoughts, after having been plagued by them during my 25 years of depression. Here's some words of encouragement - the devil can't read your mind while you are in communication with God. So, "pray continually." (I Thessalonians 5:17)
Christ quotes a verse from Psalm, in verse 27. God promised David that He would make him king over Israel, and that " 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; He will dash them to pieces like pottery...' ". (Psalm 2:9) Christ prophesies that those that overcome will also rule. We will dash the nations like pottery... the only thing I can think of to explain this is humility before God.
I commend you if you stuck through this long posting. Take it to heart. Search for yourself God's instructions for you. Grace, peace, joy, and love be your in Christ!

I Chronicles 19 (NIV)
Summary:
The Battle Against the Ammonites
Verses 1-19
Over time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son, Hanun, became king. David showed Hanun kindness because Nahash had been kind to him. David sent a delegation to express sympathy to Hanun, regarding the loss of his father. David's men entered Ammon, and the nobles of the land told Hanun that David had sent his people to explore and spy on the land, to overthrow his kingdom.
Hanun had David's men shaved and their garments cut at the rears, then sent them off. Someone informed David and he sent messengers to the men, instructing them to remain in Jericho until their beards grew back, so they wouldn't be humiliated in Jerusalem. When the Ammonites realized they'd become a stench to David, they sent 1,000 talents (about 37 tons) of silver to hire 32,000 chariots and charioteers (drivers) from Aram Naharaim (Northwest Mesopotamia), Aram Maacah, and Zobah. The king of Maacah and his troops also came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites gathered at their towns and moved out for battle.
David sent Joab out with the entire army. The Ammonites drew battle formation at their city's enterance. The kings were by themselves in the open country. Joab noticed battle lines in front and behind him, so he selected some of the best Israelite troops and deployed them against the Arameans. He deployed the rest, under his brother Abishai's command, against the Ammonites. The brothers agreed to come to each other's aid if one of the sides was too strong for them.
"Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in His sight." (Verse 13)
The Arameans fled before Joab. The Ammonites saw this and fled into the city before Abishai. Joab returned to Jerusalem. The Arameans sent messengers to bring more of their people from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophach, the commander of Hadadezer's army. When David heard this, he gathered all of Israel and crossed the Jordan River, advancing against Shophach. They fought and the Arameans fled. David killed 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, as well as their commander. The vassals of Hadadezer made peace with David and became subject to him. The Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.
Lori's Thoughts:
Sometimes our good deeds are rejected and we are hurt by those who are ignorant. Had Hanun taken the time to discover the real reason David had sent his men, he might have gained a powerful ally. Instead, he gained a powerful adversary. God doesn't instruct us to succeed in winning people's hearts. He instructs us to reach out to people. This is obedience to our King. Free will belongs to everyone and sometimes people ignore God knocking on their hearts. God does not view it as your failure if they do not accept your kindness. So, don't be discouraged when you are rejected by other people. Be encouraged that you are accepted by God.
37 tons of silver. Can you imagine? It's amazing that silver is considered precious metal in our time. Well, their money went to waste, because all they paid for was defeated by God's people.
Now, Joab knew that there was a possibility that they would be subdued by one of the armies - they were vast and strong. However, he stepped out in faith and asked for God's will to be done. This is what we must do. Step out in faith to stand up for what we believe in. We must ask for God's will to be done. That might mean that we lose some battles. But, take heart, God has victory over the war. In the end, we will be with Him forever, because we've chosen to be His children. So, if you're currently being beat up for following Christ, remember that God is always with you and will lift you up.
In this case, the Israelites were given the victory. The Ammonites lost the allies they paid for. Now, I know there is a lot of killing in the Old Testament. In this battle, David killed 47,000 Arameans. These are the wages of sin. If Christ never came to redeem us, this is what life would be like - the killing off of sinners. And, that is all of us. But, thank God for grace, for salvation that is available to all through Christ alone.

Revelation 1
Summary:
*Words spoken by Jesus are written in red.
Prologue
Verses 1-3
This is the revelation of Jesus Christ. God revealed it to Jesus to show His servants what will soon occur. Jesus sent His angel to John to make this revelation known. John testifies to all he saw - the word of God and Christ's testimony.
"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near." (Verse 3)
Greetings and Doxology
Verses 4-8
John writes to the 7 churches in Asia. He wishes them grace and peace from Him who is, was, and is to come. This greeting is also being sent from the 7 spirits before His throne (I believe the 7 spirits are the same as the 7 angels he later writes about). Also, this greeting is from Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth. (It is such a comfort to know who the real Master is.) Glory and power forever be to Him who loves us, freed us from our sins by His blood, and made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve God the Father. Amen.
"Look, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of Him. So shall it be! Amen." (Verse 7)
" 'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, 'who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.' " (Verse 8) (That is, He is the First and the Last. He has always been and always will be. He is the I Am. **See Exodus 3:14**)
One Like the Son of Man
Verses 9-20
John writes as our brother and companion in suffering, in the kingdom, and in patient endurance that belong to us in Jesus. He writes from the island of Patmos, because of God's word and the testimony of Jesus. (I believe he was exiled here because of his faith.) On the Lord's day, he was in the Spirit. He heard behind him a voice like a trumpet say, " 'Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.' " (Verse 11)
John turned to see the source of the voice and saw:
- 7 golden lampstands
- Someone 'like a son of man' **See Daniel 7:13**, dressed in a robe down to His feet, with a golden sash around His chest. His head and hair were as white as wool or snow. His eyes were like blazing fire, His feet like bronze glowing in a furnace. His voice was like rushing waters.
- Seven stars in His right hand
- A sharp double-edged sword from His mouth
- His face was like the sun, shining in all its brilliance
John fell at His feet, as though dead. The Son of Man placed His right hand on him and said, " 'Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
'Write, therefore what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.' " (Verses 17b-20).
Lori's Thoughts:
I was quite intimidated on starting this book. I felt that I'm not strong enough in my faith or wise enough to handle the contents of Revelation. But, these are thoughts from the devil in an attempt to keep me ignorant. God has shown us what it will be like soon before He returns. He warns us about the traps of this world, but promises to protect us if we choose to serve Him. Everyone serves something - the latest phone or car, a position of power or money, celebrities (have you seen all the hype on Charlie Sheen?), video game success, etc. Don't delude yourself into thinking you serve no one. If you choose to serve the Lord, He will give you the peace of mind and endurance to make it out of this earth alive. Even if you die of illness or old age, you will be made alive in Christ when He returns.
As I was walking to the train station, this morning, I passed by a small brook. The water sang as it moved quickly over the cobblestones. I told God that I love this sound and He reminded me that, in the Bible, it says that God's voice resembles the sound of running water.
As I opened Revelation and read the first chapter, I had to ask God, twice, to remove evil spirits from interfering with my studies. Normally, I need to ask once, if at all. I think the devil was working extra hard to distract me. Well, my God is greater. As I read about John's experience with the Son of Man, that is Jesus, he described Him as sounding like running water. This is one way that God told me He was with me and wanted me to read this book. Trust me, I considered doing another Chronicles chapter, because I didn't feel "ready" for Revelation. But, He encouraged me to dive in.
A second sign that He is with me is when I came across the verse that references the book of Daniel. I decided to look it up and my hand turned right to the book. Coincidence? I think not. I think God was saying, yes, I want you to study this.
Hey, guess what? He's real. If you seek Him, you'll find Him.
"But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul." (Deuteronomy 4:29)
" 'If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.' " (II Chronicles 15: 2b)
" 'For everyone who ask receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.' " (Matthew 7:8)
In verse 7, it says that the people of the earth will mourn when they see Him. These are the ones that did not choose God. We who have chosen Him are children of God, not people of the earth. The people of the earth will see themselves, finally, as people in need of salvation from sin. They will mourn because it is too late to act. Don't wait until then to decide who you want to live for.
I imagine I would faint if I saw Jesus in all of His glory. I wonder how a human body can contain Him?...
Jesus told John not to be afraid and He identified Himself as Christ. This is how we can test the spirits. Those that proclaim that Jesus is Lord are of God. They are also the ones that will tell us not to fear (but, this isn't as important as the first statement). I think demons want us to be afraid of them, because they feel empowered. Fear God alone. The thing I detest the most is the absence of Him. I'd rather be dead than separated from my Father.
I thought the symbolism of this book would be lost on me. I love how Jesus plainly states what the seven lampstands and seven stars are. In the chapters to come, we'll learn more about the seven churches and the seven angels' messages to the churches.
This is going to be fun. :)

I Chronicles 18 (NIV)
Summary:
David's Victories
Verses 1-13
Over time, David defeated the Philistines. He took Gath and its villages from them. He defeated the Moabites, who paid tribute to him as his subjects. He fought Hadadezer king (King Had) of Zobah, all the way to Hamath, when King Had was trying to establish control along the Euphrates. David captured from Zobah - 1,000 chariots; 7,000 charioteers; 20,000 foot soldiers; and he hamstrung all but 100 horses. The Arameans of Damascus came to King Had's aid. David struck down 22,000 of them. He put garrisons (troops) in Damascus and the Arameans paid tribute to him as his subjects.
"The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went." (Verse 6b)
David took from King Had to Jerusalem - the gold shields from Had's officers, and a lot of bronze from Had's towns of Tebah and Cun. This bronze was later used by Solomon to make the bronze Sea, the pillars, and other bronze articles for the Lord's temple.
Tou king of Hamath heard that David had defeated King Had and his army. Tou sent his son Hadoram to greet and congratulate David, because King Had had been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought articles of gold, silver, and bronze. David dedicated all articles from Hadoram, Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines, and Amalek to God.
Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He put garrisons (troops) in Edom and the Edomites became subject to David.
"The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went." (Verse 13b)
David's Officials
Verses 14-17
**Author's Note: "s." is short for "son of".
David reigned over Israel, doing what was just and right for his people.
Joab s. Zeruiah - head of the army
Jehoshaphat s. Ahilud - recorder
Zadok s. Ahitub & Ahimelech s. Abiathar - priests
Shavsha - secretary
Benaiah s. Jehoiada - leader of the Kerethites & Pelethites
David's sons - chief officials at the king's side
Lori's Thoughts:
David was able to do mighty things, because he devoted his loyalty and his life to God. All enemies that rose up against him, David defeated by God's hand, might, and power. We can do this too. If we dedicate our lives to serving God, you can be sure we will be attacked time and time again, by the devil, in various ways. However, because we are devoted to God, He will give us victory in everything we do for Him.
Now, David wasn't perfect and neither are we. Sometimes, we mess up. Sometimes we forget that we need God, because things are going so well. If something goes wrong, it is not because our Father has abandoned or forgotten us. It is because we are in danger of slipping away from Him and He is calling our attention to retighten our grip on Him.
Although David didn't build the temple, he helped by winning over the bronze that would be used to make some of the temple's articles. God let David be a part of this beautiful thing he had had in mind. That and his son built it, which was also an honor to David. (See I Chronicles 17 for the background story.)
Sometimes we bless others by our actions, indirectly. David defeated Tou's enemy and won Tou over as an ally. They didn't mention it in the Bible, but I'd like to think that souls were won over for God because of David's example. Maybe you and I can do the same - stand up against evil and, thus, help protect others and bring them to God.
I don't know about you, but I long for the day when our just and right Ruler is established among us, as our King. He is in my heart. I want Him as King of my world - a world without evil.

Jude (NIV)
*Author's Note* - In this entry, I've combined the summary and my thoughts. My thoughts will be written in purple. Translations of Jesus' words are written in red.
Verses 1-2
Jude, a servant of Christ and brother of James, writes to those that have been called, who are loved by the Father and kept by Jesus Christ. It is through Christ alone that we persist in our faith and remain in His grace. The blood covers us in our sinful form and this is how the Father can look at us and love us. He loves us as individuals, but abhors (hates) sin. We must have Jesus to be with the Father. Is Christ your Savior? If so, is He the Master of your life?
Jude wishes us mercy, peace, and love in abundance. A sign of goodness is when one wishes that others experience the fruit of the Spirit and the greatness of God. I wish this for you. Truly and deeply. God is awesome!
The Sin and Doom of Godless Men
Verses 3-16
Make no mistake, women can also be godless. Jude wanted to write about our salvation, but felt (was led by the Holy Spirit) that he should write to argue for the faith once entrusted to the saints. There are certain men about whom condemnation was written about long ago (they rejected God and gave their lives to the devil a long time ago; they are without grace, because they have rejected it). These men or women can still accept Christ and turn their lives around. However, time is of the essence. These men have secretly slipped among us. They have turned God's grace into a license for immorality and deny Christ as our only Sovereign and Lord. Jude reminds us that the Lord delivered His people out of Egypt, later destroying non-believers. The angels who abandoned their positions of authority and their home - God keeps them in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. Similarly, Sodom and Gomorah, and their surrounding towns, gave themselves to sexual immorality and perversion. They are an example of those that suffer the punishment of eternal fire. I believe this means that they're forever destroyed.
In the same way, these dreamers pollute their bodies, reject authority, and slander celestial beings. Dreamers live mostly in their heads. They're delusional, unaware that by neglecting to focus their thoughts on God, they allow an opening in their minds for the devil to place evil thoughts. Beware of clearing out your mind; it must be filled with thoughts of God to block out the evil one! How? Pray; speak to your Lord!
" 'When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, "I will return to the house I left." When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.' " (Matthew 12: 43-45)
The archangel Michael, when disputing with the devil about Moses' body, didn't dare use slander, but said 'The Lord rebuke you!' These men (the dreamers) speak abusively about what they don't understand. They only understand their instincts, like animals, which destroys them.
The devil is always petitioning to God against us. Read Job 1:6-12. Here are a few exerpts:
" 'Does Job fear God for nothing?' Satan replied. 'Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?...But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.' "
We are not powerless against this, however; we can pray to petition for ourselves, acknowledging your acceptance of Christ's grace, his blood which covers our sin. Remember, though, that if we continue in sin, we will no longer be in God's favor. Continue in faith and God will protect you. (That's the what the "hedge" refers to in the verse above.)
Woe to these men. They follow in the ways of Cain, of Balaam's error, and Korah's rebellion. These men are blemishes in your love feasts (maybe wedding receptions or your enjoyment of the fruit of the Spirit), feeding only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown by the wind (they have no root). They are like autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted. They are twice dead. " 'Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.' " (Matthew 7:19) They are like wild waves, foaming up in their shame. They are wandering stars - the blackest darkness is reserved for them forever.
Enoch was the 7th from Adam. He prophesied regarding these men - God will come with thousands of holy ones to judge everyone. They will convict the ungodly of their actions and harsh words against Him. These men are grumblers and faultfinders, follow evil desires, boast about themselves, and flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere
Verses 17-23
Jude calls us friends. He tells us to remember what Christ's apostles foretold - in the last times, there will be scoffers that follow their own ungodly desires. They divide us, follow their natural instincts, and do not have the Spirit. "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit." (Verse 20) Stay in God's love as you wait for Christ's mercy to bring us into eternal life. Maintain a continuous relationship with Christ. Seek Him through Bible study and prayer, so that when evil throws its grappling hook at you, you will stand firm on your Rock.
Be merciful to those that doubt. Snatch others from the fire and save them (take as many people as you can Home with you by setting an example on how to live as Jesus did and by praying for them). Show mercy with fear to others, hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh and if any has come out of a life devoted to evil - all objects use to serve him must be destroyed.
A personal example - I used to listen to rock, especially as a teenager, because my life was broken and I was angry. I'm going to write something that many will be frustrated with... I threw out my Disturbed, Godsmack, Blue October, Mythos, etc. CDs. Basically, anything that led to entrancement, clearing of the mind, and thus a doorway for the devil. I asked God to bind these doorways and cast evil from my home. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you in such matters. Know that the casting out of evil from your life must be done if Christ is to be your master. This is mercy mixed with fear.
Doxology (Praise to God)
Verses 24-25
To Him who is able to keep us from falling and present us before His glorious presence, without fault and with great joy. Christ is pleased to bring you to God's throne and ask "Can I keep her/him?" He love us and wants us! Even if we're wretched! He can mend us, after we accept Him. It is impossible to mend ourselves and God never asks us to. We work together.
To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power, and authority, through Christ, now and forever. Amen.
Now that's praising God.

I Chronicles 17 (NIV)
Summary:
God's Promise to David
Verses 1-15
Once David was settled in his palace, he told Nathan the prophet that he didn't feel right living in a palace of cedar while the ark of the covenant was in a tent. Nathan told him to do whatever he had in mind, because God was with him.
That night, God spoke to Nathan to tell David that he was not the one to build Him a dwelling place. Since the emancipation of the Israelites, God had moved from place to place, with the Israelites, never asking their leaders (known then as the judges), who were commanded to be shepherds over Israel, why they hadn't built Him a house of cedar. God had taken David from the pastures and following his flock of sheep to become ruler of Israel. God was always with him, cutting off his enemies. Now, God would make David's name as one of names of the greatest men on earth. He would provide a place for Israel to be rooted, to have a home and no longer be disturbed or oppressed by the wicked as they had been before. God would subdue David's enemies. He would build this house for David.
After David would rest with his fathers, God would raise up David's son as a successor and establish his kingdom. David's son would build God's house. He and God would be like father and son. God would never remove His love from him, unlike David's predecessor (Saul). God would set him over His house and kingdom forever. He would forever establish the throne of David's son.
Nathan reported everything God said to David.
David's Prayer
Verses 16-27
King David went in and sat before God, asking who was he and his family that God had taken him so far? God didn't stop there; He had spoken about the future of David's house. God looked at David as if he was the most exalted of men. David was at a loss as to what more to say to God for honoring him. For his sake and for God's will, the Lord did these great things and made great promises.
There is no one like God and He is the only God. There is no other nation like Israel, the one nation God redeemed for Himself, to make His name known, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before them. God made Israel His own people forever and He was their God. Let God's will for David's house be done, to glorify His name, so others will know He is God over Israel and David's house, and so that God's servant would be established forever.
God had revealed His plan for the house of the ark. David now had courage to pray to God. He praised Him - He is God, He made good promises to His servant, was pleased to bless David's house and continue his line forever. David would forever be blessed.
Lori's Thoughts:
If we are ever inspired to do something for God, we must consult with Him first. His will, not ours be done. David wanted to do a beautiful thing for God. God was establishing all the tribes of Israel in their promised land. David wanted to establish a permanent place for the ark of the covenant to dwell.
Through the prophet, Nathan, God told David that this was not meant for him to do. However, God showed David how He had blessed him and would continue to bless him. God would always show His love to David and his family; He would make David's name great (we all know him, and the City of David [Jerusalem] still exists), and David's line would be the royal line forever. I know lineage was very important to families of that time, so this was a high honor for David.
David was an obedient servant of God. Because of his devotion to God, God blessed him beyond what he asked for or imagined. David was so humble in his response - "Who am I, that you think so highly of me?"
"All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble'." (I Peter 5:5b, Proverbs 3:34)
Although God's answer to David was no, He made sure that David understood why. It wasn't because David wasn't valued. Sometimes God will tell us no when we desire to do something for Him. Sometimes God does it for us, as He took over the building of the house for David. Whatever His will is, submit to it. He sees the bigger picture, which we can't. We must trust that He knows all. Watch how He works everything out and blesses you, His servant, beyond what you can imagine. Why? Because, despite our minuteness compared to the universe, He loves us. That's enough for me.
I love David's response to God's promises:
-Humility
-He praise God, acknowledging Him as the One, which is what God wants all people to do. This is how we show Him love, by worshiping Him alone.
-He spoke of how God had blessed Israel and thanked Him.
-Let God's will be done -
1) To glorify His Name
2) So others could know His greatness
3) So David's line would be blessed forever
**Notice the order: God > others > himself
This is how our priorities should be - honor God, lead others to Him, then receive your blessing.
David grew in his relationship with the Almighty. He had courage to pray, to talk with God. Try a relationship with Him and see how He fortifies your mind and soul.
