I Chronicles 28 (NIV)

Summary:

David's Plans for the Temple
Verses 1-21

David summoned all of Israel's officials to Jerusalem.  This included the officers of the tribes; the commanders of the divisions for the king's service, of thousands, and of hundreds; the officials of the royal property and livestock, and of the palace; the mighty men and the brave warriors.  David spoke to them as brothers and his people about his plans to build a resting place for the ark of the covenant, a footstool for God.  God told him not to, because he was a warrior and had shed blood.

God had chosen the tribe of Judah, David's family from this tribe, and David from his father's sons to be king over Israel.  God had given David many sons, had chosen Solomon to be the next king, and for him to be the one to build His house and courts.  God would be Solomon's father and Solomon His son.  He would establish Solomon's kingdom forever, if he never swerved from obeying His commands and laws, as Israel was doing now.

David charged Solomon, in the presence of Israel and of God, to obey the Lord, so that they could possess their promised land and give it as an inheritance to their descendants.  David told Solomon to acknowledge and serve God wholeheartedly and with a willing mind.

"...acknowledge...God...and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.  If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever."  (Verses 9-10)

David told Solomon to be strong and to do the work.  He gave Solomon the plans for the temple: the portico, the buildings, the storerooms, the upper parts, the inner rooms, and the place of atonement (where people go in broken and leave rejoicing).  The plans for the courts, surrounding rooms, treasuries of the temple and of dedicated things were put in David's mind by the Holy Spirit.  David gave instructions for the divisions of priests and Levites, to do the work in the temple service, and for the articles to be used in the service.  He designated the weight of gold and silver.  Gold for: golden lampstands, lamps, tables for consecrated bread, gold dishes, and the chariot - the cherubim that spread their wings and shelter the ark of the covenant of the Lord.  Pure gold for: forks, sprinkling bowls, and pitchers.  Refined gold for: the altar of incense.  Silver for: silver lampstands, lamps, silver tables, and silver dishes.

David had all of this in writing, inspired by the hand of God upon him.  David told Solomon not to be afraid or discouraged, because God was with him.

"He will not fail you or forsake you..." (Verse 20b)

The divisions of priests and Levites, as well as the craftsmen were ready for the work.  The officials and all the people would obey Solomon's every command.

Lori's Thoughts:

God knew that the Israelites would eventually break the covenant with Him, turning to idols, sexual immorality, etc.  He sees all, the beginning, middle, and end.  God didn't get exasperated and decide not to bother making a covenant with Israel.  This covenant was not for God's sake, but for Israel's and for ours.  Israel was God's chosen people for a while.  After they turned on Him and lost everything, they would be able to look back and say that God is good.  They could turn back to Him.

Now, it said that God would reject them forever if they forsook Him.  If we look at the example of when God forsook Jesus Christ, when He was dying on the cross (because He had to, not because He wanted to), in order for sin and death to be defeated, we can see what forsaking is.  To forsake is to do nothing when someone is dying and asking for your help.  If we have this attitude towards God, to want nothing to do with Him, He must reject you forever.  But, God gives us so many chances to change our minds.  This is grace.  He keeps offering us the free gift of salvation.  In Revelation, John writes of the time that will come when it will be too late to accept this gift.  I hope that you choose now whom you will serve.  Yes, we must accept His salvation and choose to serve Him.  Why both?  Because the devil does all he can to lure us away from God and if we do not make God our Master, the devil will succeed!

But, remember, for now, God continues to speak to us and give us opportunities to come to Him.  We just need to want to hear Him and we will hear Him.  It's like when I listen to music.  I listen for the guitar or violin or any stringed instrument amongst the voices and other instruments.  God's voice is there amongst all the other voices in this world.  Ask Him to help you recognize and listen to it.

Revelation 10 (NIV)

Summary:

The Angel and the Little Scroll
Verses 1-11

John saw another mighty angel descending from heaven.  He was robed in a cloud with a rainbow above his head.  His face was like the sun and his legs were like fiery pillars.  He was holding a little scroll, laying open in his hand.  He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land.  He gave a loud shout, like that of a roaring lion.  Then, the 7 thunders spoke.  John was about to write what the thunders said, but a voice from heaven told him to seal it up and not write it.

The angel swore by Him who lives forever, who created the heavens, earth, sea, and all that is in them.  The angel said, " 'There will be no more delay!  But in the days when the 7th angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as He announced to His servants the prophets.' " (Vs. 6b-7)

The voice from heaven told John to take the little scroll from the angel.  John asked for it and the angel told him to take it and eat it.  It would taste like honey, but turn his stomach sour.  John did so.  John was then told that he must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages, and kings.

Lori's Thoughts:

Humans are organic.  We're elemental, but not like angels.  The angel that John saw was embodied by light, not tissue.  He was clothed in water vapor and more light, not fabric.  When we get new bodies in heaven, will we be more like this angel?  Is that what Adam and Eve were like before they sinned?

I wonder what was written on this little scroll?  Maybe the thunders revealed it, but only John was meant to know it.  Maybe this chapter is meant to remind us that our understanding is minute compared to that of our Creator.  God is mysterious.  That is a humbling fact.  God is good to remind us to be humble, to prevent us from falling as King Saul did.

According to this angel, whatever this mystery is, God will accomplish it just before the 7th angel blows his trumpet.  I do not deign to guess as to what this could be.  I'll just walk blindly in faith and know that anything God does is good and for our benefit.

Why did John need to eat the scroll?  Why was it sweet in his mouth and sour in his stomach?  Maybe the future prophecies will be easy to say, but difficult in nature?  The last thing written in Chapter 9 was about those refusing to repent.  The coming prophecies can't be good.

Let's end on a happier note:  God loves us and wants us to reign with Him in heaven!

"Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him (died to sin by accepting Him as our Saviour & Master), we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him..."  (II Timothy 2:11-12a)

" 'To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne.' "  (Revelation 3:21)

This is the list of Israelites - the heads of families, commanders of thousands or hundreds, and their officers who served the king when on duty on their specified month.  Each division had 24,000 men.
1st - Jashobeam, son of Zabdiel, the commander; a descendant of Perez
2nd - Dodai the Ahohite, the commander; Mikloth, the division leader
3rd - Benaiah, son of Jehoiada the priest; a mighty man among and over the Thirty; his son, Ammizabad, was the division leader
4th - Asahel, Joab's brother, the commander; son, Zebadiah, was his successor
5th - Shamhuth the Izrahite, the commander

Officers of the Tribes
Verses 16-24

Reubenites: Eliezer son of Zicri
Simeonites: Shephatiah son of Maacah
Levi: Hashabiah son of Kemuel
Aaron: Zadok
Judah: Elihu, David's brother
Issachar: Omri son of Michael
Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah
Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel
Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah
1/2 tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah
1/2 tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah
Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner
Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham

David didn't number the men 20 years old and under, because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.  Joab son of Zeruiah started to count the men (under David's direction), but didn't finish (because he was opposed to it).  Wrath came upon Israel on account of this numbering, so the number was omitted from the book of the annals of King David.

The King's Overseers
Verses 25-34

All these men were in charge of David's property:
- Azmavoth son of Adiel: royal storehouses
- Jonathan son of Uzziah: storehouses in outlying districts, towns, villages, and watchtowers
- Ezri son of Kelub: field workers who farmed the land
- Shimei the Ramathite: vineyards
- Zabdi the Shiphmite: produce of vineyards for the wine vats
- Baal-Hanan the Gederite: olive and sycamore-fig trees in the western foothills
- Josah: supplies of olive oil
- Shitrai the Sharonite: herds grazing in Sharon
- Shaphat son of Adlai: herds in the valleys
- Obil the Ishmaelite: camels
- Jehdeiah the Meronothite: donkeys
- Jaziz the Hagrite: flocks

- Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight, and a scribe.
- Jehiel son of Hacmoni cared for the king's sons.
- Ahithophel was the king's counselor, succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar
- Hushai the Arkite was the king's friend.
- Joab was the commander of the royal army.

Lori's Thoughts:

Wouldn't it be nice to serve for only 1 month per year, in the army?  As someone who very nearly became an army wife, this seems much more bearable than 18-24 month-long absences.  Now, the Israelites weren't exactly getting deployed thousands of miles away, but still, I'm sure they were away from home for a time when at war.

Now, David had been influenced by the devil (see Chapter 21) to count the fighting men.  Why was this a sin that incurred the wrath of God?  Because, it was an act of faith in mankind.  This was a direct violation of the first commandment God gave us.  (See Exodus 20: 3)  God promised to multiply the Israelites, to make them into a great nation.  Is God a liar?  Of course not.  So, why do we need to check up on His work?  Just trust.  (Something I'm still learning to do.)

It seems as if the Israelites had better job opportunities than we do.  I got excited when he mentioned the overseer for the flock.  Then, I realized that he mean sheep, not birds.  Oh, well.  Working in any form of animal husbandry works for me.  Although, how cool would it be to go down in history as the king's friend?  Pretty sweet position, huh?  Well, Jesus says, " 'You are my friends if you do what I command.' "  What does He command?  " 'This is my command: Love each other.' "  (John 15: 14, 17)  How bad is that?

I know I want to be friends with the King.

Revelation 9 (NIV)

Summary:

The Trumpets (Continued)
Verses 1-21

The 5th angel sounded his trumpet.  John saw a star that had fallen from the sky to earth.  The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss.  When he opened it, smoke arose, like that from a gigantic furnace.  The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke.  Locusts came out of the smoke onto the earth, with power like scorpions.  They were told not to harm the grass, plants, or trees, but only those without the seal of God on their foreheads.  They were given the power to torture, but not kill, for 5 months.  The agony will be like that of a scorpion sting.  Men will seek death, but death will elude them.

These locusts are like horses prepared for battle.  They have something like crowns of gold on their heads.  Their faces are like a human's, their hair like a woman's, and their teeth like a lion's.  They have breastplates of iron.  Their wingbeats are like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.  Their tails and stingers are like those of scorpions.

The king of the locusts is the angel of the Abyss.  His Hebrew name is Abaddon; his Greek name is Apollyon.  Both names mean Destroyer.

The first woe is past; two are to come.

The 6th angel sounded his trumpet.  John heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar before God.  It told the 6th angel to release the 4 angels bounds at the river Euphrates.  These angels are being kept ready for that very hour, day, month, and year.  They will be released and will kill 1/3 of mankind.  John heard the number of mounted troops: 200 million.

The horses and riders he saw in his vision were like this: their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow like sulfur.  Their heads were like lions.  Out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur, which are the plagues that will kill 1/3 of mankind.  Their power is in their mouths and their tails.  Their tails are like snakes, with heads that inflict injury.

The rest of mankind that were not killed still did not repent of the work of their hands.  The did not stop worshiping demons, idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood.  Their idols can't see, hear, or walk.  They did not repent of their murders, magic arts, sexual immorality, or thefts.

Lori's Thoughts:

I've heard that the star that fell from the sky to earth is Satan.  We know that stars symbolize angels, because Christ revealed that to John in the earlier chapters.  Satan was Lucifer when he was an angel of God, but he rebelled and was banished to earth.  All he wants is for us to go down with him, because he is filled with hate.  So, he is given the key to the Abyss to unleash mayhem upon mankind.

Okay, these locusts that come out of the smoke from the Abyss aren't like any locusts I've ever heard of.  The locusts on earth are like grasshoppers.  They only bother us in the short periods when they swarm and eat up crops.  The locusts of the Abyss seem huge and monster-like.  But, those of us who are sealed by God will not be harmed by them.  Remember when I was wondering whether or not we'd be in heaven before the 7th seal is opened?  Well, it seems like we may not be.  But, we will be protected, because we are sealed.  (After reviewing my notes, now I think that we may be in heaven by that point.  Either way, we do not need to worry about being affected by these woes.)

So far, there have been 7 seals.  The 7th seal leads to the 7 trumpets, and the last 3 trumpets lead to the 3 woes.  I imagine the trumpet blasts to be more like the bass war or warning blasts, rather than the soprano blasts that they use to announce the coming of royalty.  It's a bit scary, but my God is bigger and He's got us.

So, the 6th angel is given the authority to release the 4 angels from the Euphrates.  If I understand it, they have an army of 200 million to kill 1/3 of mankind.  That is about 2.3 billion people, if it were to happen today.  That number saddens my heart.  What's worse is that it sounds like God gives the wicked another chance to repent and serve Him, but they refuse.

We cannot say that God is unmerciful or impatient or ungracious.  He wants us to get out of this alive.

There is only freedom when we serve Him.  It may sound counterintuitive, but it's true.  Don't knock it until you try it.  You'll be free to leave if you don't like it, but I think you'll love it.  Take it from someone who has known brokenness and lacked love and support while growing up.  There is so much better with my God.  He can be yours too.  Just ask.

I Chronicles 26 (NIV)

Summary:

Key: [] = Mother
         + = Firstborn Son
         * = Son
        d  = Daughter
        w = Wife

The Gatekeepers
Verses 1-19

From the Korahites:
- Meshelemiah* <- Kore* <- Asaph
Meshelemiah -> Zechariah+, Jediael*, Zebadiah*, Jathniel*,  Elam*, Jehohanan*, Eliehoenai*
There were 18 sons and relatives of Meshelemiah, all able men.
- Obed-Edom -> Shemaiah+, Jehozabad*, Joah*, Sacar*, Nethanel*, Ammiel*, Issachar*, Peullethai*
God had blessed Obed-Edom (with children).
Shemaiah -> Othni*, Rephael*, Obed*, Elzabad* - they were leaders in their father's family, because they were very capable men.  Their relatives, Elihu and Semakiah, were also able men.  They, their sons, and their relatives had strength to do the work.  There were 62 descendants of Obed-Edom.
- Hosah the Merarite -> Shimri (the appointed, not born, first), Hilkiah*, Tabaliah*, Zechariah*
Hosah's sons and relatives numbered 13.

These are the divisions of the gatekeepers, through chief men, with the duties for ministering in the Lord's temple, as their relatives had.  They cast lots for each gate, according to their families, young and old alike.
- East Gate: Shelemiah (Meshelemiah)
- North Gate: Zechariah (Mesh's son), a wise counselor
- South Gate: Obed-Edom
- the Storehouse by the South Gate: Obed-Edom's sons
- West Gate & Shalleketh Gate on the upper road: Shuppim and Hosah

There were posted guard next to guard: 6 Levites/day on the East; 4/day on the North; 4/day on the South, 2 at a time at the storehouse; 4 at the road, 2 at the court for the court to the West.

The Treasurers and Other Officials
Verses 20-32

These are the fellow Levites in charge of the treasuries of God's house and of the dedicated things.
- The descendants of Ladan, that is the Gershonites throughout Ladan, the heads of their families: Jehieli and sons, Zetham, and his brother Joel.  They were in charge of the temple treasuries.
- Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites, Uzzielites:
+ Shubael, the descendant of Gershom son of Moses.  He was the officer in charge of the treasuries.
+ Shubael's relatives through Eliezer: Rehabiah, Jeshaiah, Joram, Zicri, Shelomith.
+ Shelomith and his relatives: in charge of all the treasuries for the things dedicated by King David, by the heads of families who were commanders of thousands or hundreds or other army commanders.  Some of the plunder taken in battle was dedicated for the repair of the Lord's temple.  Everything dedicated by Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, Joab son of Zeruiah, and all other dedicated things were left in their care.
+ Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were assigned duties away from the temple, as officials and judges over Israel.
+ Hebronites: Hashabiah and his relatives numbered 1700 able men.  They were responsible in Israel, west of the Jordan, for all of the Lord's work and the king's service.  According to their genealogical records, their chief was Jeriah.
During the 40th year of David's reign, a search was made in the records and capable men among the Hebronites were found at Jazer in Gilead.  Jeriah had 2700 relatives, all able men and heads of their families.  King David put them in charge of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for everything pertaining to God and the king's affairs.

Lori's Thoughts:

This is an interesting chapter, because my position, although not officially named as such, has been described as a gatekeeper.  I don't know if I'd categorize myself as one of those capable men, but I do know how to summon them.

So, these Israelite men were the bouncers for God and for their earthly king.  With all the riches described in previous chapters, I'm sure they were quite needed.  It's funny, though.  Nowadays, most people that are filthy rich and heavily guarded are the greedy, miserly, or dishonest types, not the good guys.  In my studies and personal life, I've found that God is the God of 180°s.  He has a tendency to flip things around, that break the norms of life on earth.  I find that this is why people don't understand or trust Him.

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." (I Corinthians 2:14)

So, take heart.  Your life may appear as a mess, but let go and let God.  He'll flip it around.  Don't see how that's possible?  That's fine.  Walk by faith, not by sight.  He turned my life around.  I'm no more or less special than you.  We were both created by Him and He loves us just the same.

Revelation 8 (NIV)

Summary:

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer
Verses 1-5

The Lamb opened the 7th seal and there was silence in heaven for half an hour.  Then, the angels that stand before God were given 7 trumpets.  Another angel, with a golden censer, came and stood at the altar.  This angel was given much incense to offer to God, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne.  The smoke of the incense and the prayers went up before God from the angel's hand.  The angel, then, filled the censer with fire from the altar and hurled it onto the earth.  There resulted peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The Trumpets
Verses 6-13

The 7 angels prepared to sound their trumpets.  The first was sounded.  Hail and fire, mixed with blood, was hurled down upon the earth.  1/3 of the earth, 1/3 of the trees, and all the green grass were burned up.

The second was sounded and something like a huge mountain, ablaze, was thrown into the sea.  1/3 of the sea turned to blood, 1/3 of the sea creatures died, and 1/3 of the ships were destroyed.

The third was sounded and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky onto 1/3 of the rivers and springs of water.  This star is named Wormwood, which means Bitterness.  1/3 of the waters turned bitter and many people died because of it.

The fourth was sounded and 1/3 of the sun, 1/3 of the moon, and 1/3 of the stars were struck and turned dark.  1/3 of the day and 1/3 of the night were without light.

John heard an eagle calling out, while flying in midair, " 'Woe!  Woe!  Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!' " (Verse 13b)

Lori's Thoughts:

After the 7th seal is opened, it seems like there will be a calm before an ever-worsening storm hits.  The previous chapter speaks of the great multitude in heaven, with robes cleansed by the blood of the Lamb.  Does this mean that we won't have to endure the woes of the 7 trumpets?  Or will we be sealed, then gathered up to heaven after the woes are over?  Maybe, since we're sealed, we won't be harmed by the woes.

[ Let me take this time to remind my readers that these are my human interpretations of the Word.  Nothing can substitute a personal relationship with God, and you establish one by accepting His free gift of salvation, then studying the Bible and praying daily.  So, don't take my word as law. ]

When the 5th seal was opened, John saw the souls of those slain for Christ under the altar.  When the 7th seal was opened, an angel with the prayers of the saints offered them to God on the golden altar.  I think this is the same altar.  I think they're connected, but I'm not sure how.

Maybe the fire this angel hurled onto the earth created an opening from heaven to earth, for the woes to be thrown down upon the earth.

The 4th trumpet woe seems similar to the 6th seal.  When the 6th seal is opened, the sun turns black, the moon red, and the stars fall.  The 4th trumpet causes 1/3 of them to go dark.  They're similar, but I'm not sure why.

Oh, limited human that I am.  But, where we lack, God supplies.  We walk by faith, not by sight.  Jesus saves, not our human efforts, lest we should boast.

Okay, let's look at it this way:

Trumpet      Elements                              Targets
1            Hail, Fire, Blood                  1/3 Earth, 1/3 Trees, All Green Grass
     2            ~Huge Mtn Ablaze              1/3 Sea -> Blood, 1/3 Sea Creatures, 1/3 Ships
3            Great Star Blazing                1/3 Rivers & Springs -> People using their water
     4            Darkness                             1/3 Sun, 1/3 Moon, 1/3 Stars -> 1/3 Day, 1/3 Night

. . .

Have you ever noticed how God never does the same thing twice?  He created everything in 7 days.  No one day was like another.  He destroyed the earth by water, but promised never to do so again.  The seven seals and trumpets may have some similarities, but they're not identical.  Why do we try to ritualize our faith?  Jesus deals with each of us as individuals.  We should love individuals as well, not just the people that are the same as us, doing the same things as us.  God doesn't want us to depend upon rituals.  We are to depend upon Him.

Yes, I know, I go off on tangents, but it's all relevant.  :)

I Chronicles 25 (NIV)

Summary:

The Singers
Verses 1-31

David and the army commanders set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres, and cymbals.  These are the men who performed this service:
- sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, Asarelah; supervised by Asaph, who prophesied under the king's supervision
-sons of Jeduthun: Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, Mattithiah; supervised by Jeduthun, who prophesied, using the harp to thank and praise the Lord
-sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shubael, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer (my 2nd favorite name), Joshbekashah (my favorite name), Mallothi, Hothir, Mahazioth; Heman, the king's seer, was given 14 sons and 3 daughters, as God had promised, to exalt the Lord

All of them were under their father's supervision for the music of the Lord's temple, with cymbals, lyres, and harps, to minister at God's house.  The fathers were all under David's supervision.  They all numbered 288 men, trained and skilled in music for the Lord.

The young and old, teacher and student, all cast lots for their duties.  This is the order that the lots fell, for each man, his sons, and relatives:

1st - Joseph (son of Asaph)                     13th - Shubael
2nd - Gedaliah                                        14th - Mattithiah
3rd - Zaccur                                            15th - Jerimoth
4th - Izri (aka Zeri)                                  16th - Hananiah
5th - Nethaniah                                        17th - Joshbekashah
6th - Bukkiah                                          18th - Hanani
7th - Jesarelah                                         19th - Mallothi
8th - Jeshaiah                                          20th - Eliathah
9th - Mattaniah                                       21st - Hothir
10th - Shimei                                          22nd - Giddalti
11th - Azarel (aka Uzziel)                        23rd - Mahazioth
12th - Hashabiah                                     24th - Romamti-Ezer

Lori's Thoughts:

If the army commanders were in charge of appointing the prophets/musicians, imagine how organized and professional they must have been.  A military orchestra - they'd probably win competitions.  Firstly, because of great leadership.  Secondly, because there is no greater joy than that which comes from loving and being loved by God.  It's hard to contain radiating joy.  I don't feel it 24/7.  Most of the time, I'm just peaceful.  But, I've definitely burst with joy from the knowledge that I am loved unconditionally, so much that I must praise Him aloud!

I know I enjoy receiving compliments.  God does too.  Tell Him what you like about Him.  I guarantee you'll feel His appreciation shining down on you.

Revelation 7 (NIV)

Summary:

144,000 Sealed
Verses 1-8

John saw 4 angels standing at the 4 corners of the earth, holding back the 4 winds from blowing on the land, sea, or any tree.  Another angel came up from the east, holding the seal of the living God.  This angel called out to the 4 angels given the power to harm the land and the sea, telling them not to harm anything until they had put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.  (I love how the angel says "our" God  :) ).

144,000 were sealed; 12,000 from each tribe of Israel:  Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin.

The Great Multitude in White Robes
Verses 9-17

John saw before him a great multitude, too great to count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne and before the Lamb.  They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches.  They cried out to the Lamb, " 'Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.' " (Verse 10b)

The angels around the throne, elders, and 4 living creatures fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, " 'Amen!  Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever.  Amen!' " (Verse 12)

One of the elders asked John who the white robed people were and where they had come from.  John responded that the elder knew.  The elder said that they were those that had come out of the great tribulation, washed their robes, and made their robes white with the Lamb's blood.  Therefore, " 'They are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tent over them.  Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst.  The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat.  For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; He will lead them to springs of living water.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.' " (Verses 15-17)

Lori's Thoughts:

Are you worthy enough to be among the sealed?  Of course not!  None of us are!  Those of us that have accepted salvation from Christ are covered in His blood, spiritually speaking.  And Jesus is worthy.

Sometimes I get so frustrated with my sinful self.  I should feel excited to be with my Lord and Savior forever.  My human self says, "but, there's so much I want to do here!"  For example, I want to go to Europe, the Galapagos, snorkel the Tasman Sea, get married...  But, God appeals to our intellect, not our emotions.  I know that I never want to go back to the point where I was living without God as my focus, as my Master.  That life was unfulfilling at best.  I remember going to the beach with my friends once and being incapable of enjoying the sun or the sand or the waves or the campanionship.  I felt so depressed, like I was born to suffer.  I remember comparing myself to the Princess who never laughed.

After four psychologists over 8 years, one of them being Christian, I got worse.  2010 was one of the worst years of my life.  It wasn't until I surrendered my life, my depression, my ambitions, everything at the feet of Jesus that everything changed for the better.  Jesus said, " 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.' " (Matthew 11:28-30)

I haven't been depressed since that day, last June.  I still have health, financial, and relationship problems, but they're no longer bogging me down.  I can lean on Jesus.  I know God wants me to prosper.  His will be done in my life.  We both know my efforts alone lead only to failure.  I hope you allow God to do the same for you, in His way and time, for your unique situation.

So, back to Revelation.  I remember people worrying that only 144,000 people that have ever lived on this earth are the ones that will go to heaven.  I'm not sure if they're symbolic or if it just means that 12,000 of each Israelite tribe, from the Old Testament, will be in heaven.  I trust that God will reveal the meanings at the appropriate times.

The 144,000 can't be all, because John said that a multitude too great to count appeared in heaven.  The elder stated that these are the ones that chose Christ as their Savior and endured with Him through great tribulations.

You know how when you fall in love with someone, you always want to be with them, talking, laughing, playing games, etc.?  I imagine that is how it will be in heaven, when we're finally with the One that loves us the most.

The Division of Priests
Verses 1-19

Aaron -> Nadab*, Abihu*, Eleazar*, Ithamar*:  the first two died before Aaron did, and they had no sons.  Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

King David was aided by Zadok, a descendant of Eleazar, and Ahimelech, a descendant of Ithamar.  David separated the priests into divisions for their appointed order of ministering.  There were 16 heads of the families of Eleazar and 8 heads of the families of Ithamar.  Lots were cast for the fair division of the priests, because there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among both groups.

Shemaiah son of Nethanel, the Levite, was the scribe.  He recorded the priests' names, in the presence of the king and his officials:  Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the heads of the families of the Levite priests.  They cast lots for Eleazar, then Ithamar:

1st lot - Jehoiarib                                        13th - Huppah
2nd - Jedaiah                                              14th - Jeshebeab
3rd - Harim                                                15th - Bilgah
4th - Seorim                                               16th - Immer
5th - Malkijah                                             17th - Hezir
6th - Mijamin  (sounds Jamaican)                18th - Happizzez (my favorite name)
7th - Hakkoz                                              19th - Pethaniah
8th - Abijah                                                20th - Jehezkel
9th - Jeshua                                                21st - Jakin
10th - Shecaniah                                         22nd - Gamul
11th - Eliashib                                             23rd - Delaiah
12th - Jakim                                                24th - Maaziah

This is the appointed order of ministering when the priests enter the Lord's temple, according to the regulations appointed by Aaron, as God had commanded him.

The Rest of the Levites
Verses 20-31

Levi -> Amram* -> Shubael* -> Jehdeiah*
       -> Rehabiah* -> Isshiah+
       -> the Izharites -> Shelemoth -> Jahath*
-> Hebron* -> Jeriah+, Amariah*, Jahaziel*, Jekameam* (my 2nd favorite name)
       -> Uzziel* -> Micah* -> Shamir*
                        -> Isshiah* -> Zechariah*
-> Merari* ->  Mahli*, Mushi*, Jaaziah* -> Beno*, Shoham*, Zaccur*, Ibri*
                               Mahli -> Eleazar* (no sons)
                               Mushi -> Mahli*, Eder*, Jerimoth*
       -> Kish* -> Jerahmeel*

They also cast lots in front of David and his officials.  The families of the oldest brothers were treated the same as those of the youngest.

Lori's Thoughts:

Imagine being told that you will be chosen for a specific work for God.

In my life, I've seen how important it is to everyone to be chosen for something.  To feel unique, to be able to do that thing that no one else can.  We want to be noticed for our physical or artistic abilities in a game or performance.  We want to be chosen for our intellect or beauty as valedictorian or prom royalty.  I want to be chosen as a wife.

Despite our selfish desires to matter, to be significant, God tells us that if we humble ourselves in service to Him, He will choose us for work, positions of authority, and opportunities for adventure greater than we could have imagined for ourselves.

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up."  (James 4:10)

God wants you, with your unique abilities to serve Him.  Do that, and you will be showered with love, joy, true friendships...  These are a few of the things you'll receive if you let Him use you for His will.

"...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."  (Galatians 5:22-23a)

Revelation 6 (NIV)

Summary:

The Seals
Verses 1-17

John watched as the Lamb opened the 1st of the 7 seals.  One of the 4 living creatures cried out in a voice like thunder, 'Come!'  A white horse appeared; its rider carrying a bow.  The rider was given a crown and rode out like a conqueror bent on conquest.

The 2nd seal was opened and the 2nd living creature said 'Come!'  A fiery red horse appeared.  The rider was given power to take peace from the earth and make men slay each other.  He was given a large sword.

The 3rd seal was opened and the 3rd living creature said 'Come!'  A black horse appeared; its rider with scales in his hand.  A voice among the living creatures said, " 'A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine.' "  (Verse 6b)

The 4th seal was opened and the 4th living creature said 'Come!'  A pale horse appeared.  It rider is named Death.  Hades followed closely behind.  They were given power over 1/4 of the earth to kill by the sword, famine, plague, and the wild beasts of the earth.

The 5th seal was opened.  John saw under the altar the souls of those slain because of God's word and their testimony that they had maintained.  They called out in a loud voice, " 'How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?' " (Verse 10b)  They were each given  a white robe and told to wait a bit longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers to be killed as they had been was completed.

The 6th seal was opened.  There was a great earthquake.  The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair.  The moon turned blood red.  The stars of the sky fell to the earth like late figs that drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.  The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.  The kings of the earth, princes, generals, the rich, the mighty, every slave and free man hid in caves among the rocks of the mountains.  They called out to the mountains to fall on them, to hide them from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the Lamb's wrath. They will say, 'The great day of Their wrath has come and who can stand?'

Lori's Thoughts:

*This is my educated guess.  Do not take my word as fact.*

Maybe the 4 living creatures are the angels holding back the riders from the four corners of the world: North, South, East, and West.  Maybe I'm not meant to know what they symbolize.  But, why would God present it to us in the Bible?

Maybe the rider on the white horse represents Jesus bent to defeat the devil and death.  He is given a crown because He is our rightful ruler.  He created us, for heaven's sake.

Maybe the other riders are angels - of death, whereas the angels represented by the 7 stars are messenger angels.  Maybe the red one has already come.  There hasn't been a lot of peace for a long time.  Our history books denote wars and depressions as eras worth knowing.  There was the Enlightenment, about 300 years ago, but even that had conflict and wars, like America's Revolutionary War.  I can't remember them talking about an era of peace.

Maybe the black one has to do with the economy.  We're in a recession.  Japan was demolished and now the stock market is crashing.  Congress may have to instill another furlough, where federal employees will be forced not to work, so we won't get paid.  Maybe our wages, the wheat and barley, will be garnished.  I wonder what the oil and wine represent?  Assets that can be liquidated?

Maybe the pale horse has come.  Look at all the earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, cholera breakouts, and radiation poisonings that have happened.  Hundreds and thousands have died because of them.  Hades is close behind...

The 5th seal - souls under the altar.  Maybe they were sacrificed and their souls must wait where they fell until they are gathered together with their brothers and sisters in Christ.

The 6th seal - a great earthquake and all our sources of light are changed.  John sensed the earthquake in heaven.  Will the sky, versus the earth, be shaken?  The sun goes pitch black, the moon blood red, and the stars will be violently thrown out of place.  The sky and land will be moved out of their places as well.  Everyone will hide together, despite their class or position, and they will beg for death rather than face God's wrath.

I hope not to be in this group.

Have mercy on me, Lord, a sinner.  Mold me and change me.  Let me be wholly yours.

I Chronicles 23 (NIV)

Summary:

The Levites
Verses 1-6

When David was old, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.  He gathered all the Israelite leaders, priests, and the Levites.  38,000 Levites, ages 30+, were counted.  David appointed the following Levites with specific duties:
- 24,000 to supervise the work of the Lord's temple
- 6,000 officials and judges
- 4,000 gatekeepers
- 4,000 to praise the Lord with the appointed musical instruments

David divided the Levites into groups, with respect to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Gershonites
Verses 7-11

Ladan -> Jehiel+, Zetham*, Joel*
Shimei -> Shelemoth*, Haziel*, Haran* - the heads of Ladan's families
-> Jahath+, Ziza*, Jeush*, Beriah* - the last two did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family with one assignment

Kohathites
Verses 12-20

Kohath -> Amram*, Izhar*, Hebron*, Uzziel*
Amram -> Aaron*, Moses* - Aaron and his descendants were set apart to consecrate the most holy things, offer sacrifices to God, minister, and bless His name forever.  Moses, the man of God, and his sons were counted as part of the Levite tribe.
Moses -> Gershom*, Eliezer*
Gershom -> Shubael+
Eliezer -> Rehabiah+ (an only son) -> many sons

Izhar-> Shelomith+
Hebron -> Jeriah+, Amariah, Jahaziel, Jekameam
Uzziel -> Micah+, Isshiah

Merarites
Verses 21-32

Merari -> Mahli*, Mushi*
Mahli -> Eleazar*, Kish*
Eleazar -> daughters only
Kish -> sons that married Eleazar's daughters (Yes, they were cousins.  Remember, this was a much different time than it is now.)
Mushi -> Mahli* (how sweet - he named his son after his brother), Eder*, Jerimoth*

These were the workers, ages 20+, who served in the Lord's temple.  (I know, it said ages 30+ in the begining.  What is important is that they served God.)  David declared that, since God had given Israel rest, the Levites didn't have to carry the tabernacle or the articles used in its service.  The Levites were to help Aaron's descendants in the service of the temple.  They were in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of sacred things, and other duties in God's house.  They were also in charge of the bread set out on the table, the flour for the grain offerings, the unleavened wafers, the baking and mixing, and the measurements of quantities and sizes.  They were to stand every morning and evening, during the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moon festivals, and appointed feasts to give thanks and praise to the Lord.  They were to serve before God regularly, in the proper number and way prescribed.

The Levites carried out the responsibilities for the Tent of the Meeting and the Holy Place, under their brothers, the descendants of Aaron, to serve in the Lord's temple.

Lori's Thoughts:

This time, when David counted the people, it was for the service of God, rather than the service of self, as when he counted the fighting men of Israel.  This was a time of peace.  Rather than fighting or fleeing, Israel would be established.  Rather than praying to God for strength and deliverance, it was now time for Israel to praise God for the times He had helped and protected them.

Imagine if you had a buddy that you helped out of financial crises time and again, as a gift.  You never asked for reimbursements.  Imagine if that buddy took your money and never once expressed gratitude.  I would be pretty frustrated and question our friendship.

It is just as important to stop moving forward, stand where you are, lift your head and hands up, and make a joyful noise, as it is to lean and depend upon God.  Acknowledge all the times God got you unstuck or shielded you from the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Believe me, your heart will swell and you will say as David said in the 23rd Psalm, "My cup runneth over".

As sinners, we don't know how to pray or praise, which is why there were so many rules for worship.  Now, there is freedom in Christ and we can worship freely - by ourselves or with others.

Revelation 5 (NIV)

Summary:

The Scroll and the Lamb
Verses 1-14

John saw, in the right hand of the One seated on the throne, a scroll with writing on both sides, with 7 seals.  A mighty angel called out, " 'Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?' "  (Verse 2b)  No one in heaven, on earth, or under the earth could open it or look inside.  John wept because no one worthy was found.

One of the elders told John, " 'Do not weep!  See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.  He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.' "  (Verse 5b)

Then, John saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slain.  It was standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the 4 living creatures and the 24 elders.  It had 7 horns and 7 eyes, which are the 7 spirits (or sevenfold spirit of God sent out into all the earth).  He took the scroll from the One on the throne.  The living creatures and elders fell before Him.  They each had a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.  They sang a new song:  " 'You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.  You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.' " (Verses 9b-10)

John looked and heard the voices of many angels: 10,000 times 10,000.  They encircled the throne, the creatures, and the elders.  In a loud voice, they sang:  " 'Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!' "  (Verse 12b)

John heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them sing, " 'To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!' "  (Verse 13b)  The four living creatures said 'Amen' and the elders fell down and worshiped.

Lori's Thoughts:

This is my educated interpretation - The scroll is the Book of Life, where the names of those who are saved are written.  John wept, because if no one was worthy to open the scroll and present the names to God, then none of us humans could ever enter heaven.  However, Jesus is worthy.  He is worthy, because He paid our entrance fee with His blood.

The golden bowls with incense are the saints' communications with God.  Maybe this is evidence of a relationship with Him that helps back up the scroll's list.

Who are the thousands upon thousands of angels?  Are they those of us that will be in heaven, in our new bodies?  If angels are represented by spirits, lampstands, and the Lamb's 7 eyes in Revelation; maybe we are represented by angels...

All heaven broke loose in praise and worship of our Savior and Redeemer.  It's interesting how He is represented as the Lion of Judah and the Sacrificial Lamb.  Our God is mighty.  He humbled Himself for us.  He may be scarred as a Lamb, but He is the I Am.  My words are inadequate to express how awesome and powerful He is.

I Chronicles 22 (NIV)

Summary:

Verse 1

David declared that the house of God and the altar for burnt offerings for Israel would be established at the threshing floor he had bought from Araunah.

Preparations for the Temple
Verses 2-19

David ordered the assembling of the foreigners in Israel and appointed stonecutters to prepare dressed stone to build the house of God.  David provided a lot of iron for the nails for the doors of the gateways and the fittings.  He provided more bronze than could be weighed and more cedar logs than could be counted, which had been gifted to him by the Sidonians and Tyrians.

David said that his son, Solomon, was young and inexperienced.  The house of God was to be magnificent, famous, and full of splendor in the sight of all nations.  So, David would make preparations for it before his death.  He called for Solomon and charged him to build God's house.  He told Solomon of his intentions, but God had told David that he'd shed a lot of blood and fought many wars on the earth.  He would be given a son of peace and rest, and God would give his son rest from all of his enemies.  His name would be Solomon, which is similar to the Hebrew word for "peace".  God would grant Israel peace and quiet during his reign.  Solomon would build a house for His Name.  He would be God's son and God his Father.  God would establish his throne forever.

David asked for God to be with Solomon and grant him success as he built God's house, according to God's instructions.  David asked for God to give Solomon discretion and understanding when in command of Israel, to help him keep God's law, which would help him be succesful.  He told Solomon to be strong and courageous, not afraid or discouraged.  David also put in a great effort to provide for the temple:
- 100,000 talents (about 3,750 tons) of gold
- 1,000,000 talents (about 37,500 tons) of silver
- bronze & iron too great to be weighed
- wood & stone
- innumerable workmen: stonecutters, masons, carpentars, crafstmen for the various metals, etc.

Solomon was allowed to add to the supplies.  David also ordered the leaders of Israel to help Solomon with this project.  God was with them and had granted them peace by handing over the land's inhabitants to David.  The land was subject to the Lord and His people.

"Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God."  (Verse 19a)

David instructed them to build the sanctuary to bring the ark of the covenant and sacred articles into the temple to be built for the Name of the Lord.

Lori's Thoughts:

See how quickly God helped David get back on his feet after slipping in sin, then repenting immediately?  That's because David belonged to God.  Our Father is just and merciful.  If we devote ourselves to Him, He is good to make us aware of wrongs, which we will do as humans, and we can return into His favor.  Now, that's not to say we can live as sinners because He'll forgive us every time.  Forgiveness is for the sincere.  As Christians, we should sin rarely to never, because the Holy Spirit guides our hearts and thoughts.  Also, no tempation has come to you, that has not been experienced by others.  God will provide a way for you not to fall into sin.  (See I Corinthians 10:13)

David said God's will be done for the temple.  He was not to be the builder.  David was humble enough to step back and support his son for God's work.  Solomon had a good father.  His father taught him about obedience and worship of God.  He taught Solomon how to be a leader, to be strong and courageous.  He spoke words of encouragement and faith in his son's capabilities, despite his youth and lack of experience.  I encourage all parents to follow David's example.  We need to build up our children in the knowledge and confidence in God.  This will enable them to be good people and accomplish great things.

I imagine heaven to be like Solomon's time.  Peaceful.  Work devoted to God.  The creation of the most beautiful and grand artwork I've ever heard of, including the Sistine Chapel.  I look forward to it.

I must express my human reaction here.  1,000,000 talents = 37,500 tons = 75,000 pounds of silver!  That's the equivalent of a baby elephant stacked on top of 3 of the heaviest recorded elephants!

We cannot deny that God wants us to prosper.  Let me just remind myself and you that there are things much more valuable than things, such as Love and a relationship with God.  Without these, everything is meaningless.

Remember to "... devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God."

Revelation 4 (NIV)

Summary:

The Throne in Heaven
Verses 1-11

John looked and saw a door before him, standing open in heaven.  The first voice that he had heard, which sounded like a trumpet, spoke again and said, " 'Come up here and I will show you what must take place after this.' " (Verse 1b)  Immediately, John was in the Spirit and saw before him:  a throne in heaven.  Sitting on the throne was one with the appearance of jasper and carnelian .  There was an emerald-like rainbow encircling the throne.  Around the one throne were 24 others, with elders on them.  The elders were dressed in white, with crowns of gold on their heads.  There were flashes of lighting, rumblings and peals of thunder from the one throne.  Seven lamps were blazing before the throne.  These seven lamps are the seven spirits, or the sevenfold spirit.  A sea of glass, clear as crystal, was also before the throne.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes all over.  One was like a lion, another like an ox, one with the face of a man, and another like a flying eagle.  They each had six wings covered with eyes.  Day and night, they never stop saying, " 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.' " (Verse 8b)

Whenever the creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and lives forever, the 24 elders fall down before Him and worship Him.  They lay down their crowns before the throne and say,          " 'You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.' " (Verse 11)

Lori's Thoughts:

John says that he was in the Spirit.  He was not physically taken to heaven nor was he dreaming.  I believe he was given a vision.  Christ told him he'd see what was to come.  I believe he saw what heaven will be like.

I don't know for sure who the elders are, but I heard a theory that they are the 12 leaders of Israel and the 12 apostles.  Not the 12 disciples, because that would include Judas.  Since Judas died without repenting of his sin, I do not believe he is one of the 24.  It's too bad, because God would have forgiven him if he'd asked.

I think the 24 represent the people of the Old and New Testament times.  We will be in heaven together and worship God all the time, as we were meant to be.  This might sound like too much, but humans are always worshiping something, whether it's God, money, celebrities, the devil, or themselves.  We were made to worship.  Out of ignorance or hatred, we worship what we should not.  Only God is worthy and gives us life for our devotion to Him.

I'm not sure what the creatures with eyes represent.  They are good because they worship God.  Are they angels?  They have six wings each.  I'm not sure.  I'm just trusting that my God knows all ..."and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him..." (Romans 8:28a).

Heaven sounds beautiful and powerful.  Imagine precious gems amid the clearest and stillest water, with thunder and lighting.  Awesome and powerful is the I am.

(Interesting tidbit - one of my high school teachers pointed out that jasper has every color of every human race.  We are made in His image --see Genesis 1:27.)

I Chronicles 21 (NIV)

Summary:

David Numbers the Fighting Men
Verses 1-30

Satan arose against Israel.  He prompted David to take a census of Israel.  David told Joab to count those from Beersheba to Dan.  Joab responded:  Let God multiply the troops by 100.  Weren't all of them David's subjects?  Why did David want to bring guilt on Israel?  But, David overruled Joab.

Joab did so and reported 1,100,000 swordsmen, including 470,000 in Judah.  He left out Levi and Benjamin, because the command repulsed him.  The command was also evil in God's eyes, so He punished Israel.  David confessed his sin and asked for God to remove his guilt.  God responded through Gad, David's seer.  God gave David three choices:  3 years of famine, 3 months of being driven away by their enemies' swords, or 3 days of the sword of the Lord - a plague in the land and the Lord's angel ravaging Israel.  David responded:  He was in deep distress.  Let him fall in God's hands, because God is merciful, but do not let him fall into the hands of men.  So, God sent a plague on Israel.  70,000 men fell.

An angel was sent to destroy Jerusalem.  God grieved because of the calamity and told the angel to withdraw.  The angel was standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.  David saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword over Jerusalem.  David and the elders were wearing sackcloth and they fell facedown.  David told God that it was he who had sinned, that the Israelites were just sheep.  He asked for the punishment to fall on him and his family.

The angel of the Lord told Gad to tell David to build an altar to God on Araunah's threshing floor.  David obeyed.  Araunah was threshing wheat when he saw the angel.  His four sons hid.  David approached and Araunah fell at David's feet.  David asked to buy Araunah's threshing floor, at full price, to stop the plague.  Araunah offered it for free, as well as the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for wood, and wheat for the grain offering.  David insisted to pay the full price for what would be used for God.  He paid 600 shekels (~15 pounds) of gold.  He built an altar to God, sacrificed burnt and fellowship (peace) offerings.  David called on God and He sent fire from heaven on the burnt offering.

God told His angel to sheath his sword.  When David saw that God had answered him, at Araunah's threshing floor, he offered sacrifices there.  The Lord's tabernacle, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of burnt offerings were at the high place in Gibeon.  David couldn't go there to inquire of God, because he feared the sword of the angel of the Lord.

Lori's Thoughts:

Obviously, David sinned because he followed orders from someone other than God.  However, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around why taking a census is bad.  Here's my educated guess:  David was counting the fighting men of Israel.  Knowing this number would give him a false sense of security.  He would rely on humans for strength and protection, rather than on God.  Allowed to do so, David would have ended up as King Saul - in self-worship.

So, God brought it to David's attention that he had sinned.  He was good enough to consult with David for the punishment of Israel.  Because of one man's sin, a whole nation was punished.  I mean, 70,000 people died for David's sin!  Well, I have good news for you.  The sacrifice of one Man covers the whole world's debt for their sins.   Check yes or no for receipt.

Now, how amazing and scary would it have been to see the angel of the Lord, wielding a sword?  I would have been scared.  I bet Araunah was thinking of the angel of God that had destroyed the firstborn Egyptians.  Maybe that's why his sons hid.

Well, Araunah was quite respectful of David and of God, offering everything for free.  We should be willing as well to offer everything to God, if He asks us to.  David was right to pay Araunah, though.  This was another sign of contrition and act of atonement.  What saved David was his immediate repentance and obedience.  He did exactly what God told him to do and the destruction stopped.  God let David know He had heard his prayers by sending fire from heaven for the burnt offering, which must have been another amazing sight.

Like David, we should fear God's wrath, but know that He is merciful and just, and He does love us.  He wants to save us, not destroy us.  Remember, God was grieved at Jerusalem's destruction and stopped it, before everyone was killed.  However, there is no room for sin, with God.  It must be eradicated.  I guess it is fitting that this story ends at a threshing floor.  In the words of John the Baptist, " 'I will baptize you with water for repentance.  But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will clear His threshing floor, gathering His wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.' "  (Matthew 3: 11-12)  Let the Holy Spirit help you remove the sin from your life, like chaff.  Be on fire for God.

Revelation 3 (NIV)

Summary:

To the Church in Sardis
Verses 1-6

Description of Christ:  He holds the 7 spirits (or the sevenfold spirit) and the 7 stars.
Praise:  Some of them have not soiled their clothes, so they will walk with Him, dressed in white, because they are worthy.
Warning:  They have a reputation for being alive, but they are actually dead.  Wake up!  Strengthen what is left and about to die.  Their deeds are incomplete in God's eyes.  Remember what you've received and heard.  Obey it and repent.  If you don't wake up, He will come like a thief, when you don't expect Him.
Reward:  Those that overcome will be dressed in white.  He will never blot out their names from the book of life.  He will acknowledge their names before the Father and His angels.  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."  (Verse 6)

To the Church in Philadelphia
Verses 7-13

Description of Christ:  He is holy and true.  He holds the key of David.  What He opens, no one can shut.  What He shuts, no one can open.
Praise:  He knows their deeds.  He has opened a door before them that no one can shut.  They have little strength, but have kept His word and have not denied His name.  They have kept His commands and endured patiently.  He will keep them from the hour of trial and what will happen to the whole world, to test those living on earth.
Warning:  Those of the synagogue of Satan, claiming to be Jews, but are not, are liars.  He will make them fall at the feet of the Philadelphians and acknowledge that God has loved them.  He is coming soon, so hold on to what you have, so no one will take your crown.
Reward:  Those that overcome, He will make a pillar in God's temple.  They will never leave it again.  He will write on them God's name; the name of God's city, that is the New Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven; and the new name of Jesus.   "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."  (Verse 13)

To the Church in Laodicea
Verses 14-22

Description of Christ:  He is the Amen.  He is the faithful and true witness.  He is the ruler of God's creation.
Warning:  He knows their deeds.  They are neither hot nor cold.  Since they are lukewarm, He is about to spit them out of His mouth.  They claim to be rich and that they don't need anything.  In actuality, they are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.  Christ counsels them to buy from Him gold refined in fire, so they can be rich; white clothes to cover their shameful nakedness; and salve for their eyes, so they can see.  He rebukes and disciplines those He loves.  Be earnest and repent.  "Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and him with me."  (Verse 20)
Reward:  To them that overcome, He will give the right to sit with Him on His throne, just as He overcame and sat down with His Father on His throne.  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."  (Verse 22)

Lori's Thoughts:

Description of Jesus:  He holds the key of David.  Christ knocks on our hearts.  If we open our hearts to Him, maybe this is when He opens doorways for us.  If we open doorways to evil spirits by knowingly or unknowingly getting involved in the occult or worshiping a false god, that is a demon or the devil, and God closes these doors when we confess our sins and submit to Him, then He can open a doorway with us when we worship Him, to connect with the Holy Spirit.  Remember, we cannot serve two masters, so we must expel sin from our lives once we accept Christ as our Savior.  The Holy Spirit helps us do this by bringing our sin to our attention.  I know He has for me.

Praise:  Sometimes good people die.  We should not fear the first death.  If your life is in His hands, He may give you rest until the hour of trial is over and it is time to wake up and go Home.  Remember, His will be done, not ours.  My brother had an adopted father, in Christ.  Mr. Maisu.  He was a good man and a good father.  After having been abused by our biological father, it was a blessing to see a loving and selfless man.  Mr. Maisu died of cancer.  Our father is still alive (we haven't lived with him for 10 years).  Some may see this as unfair.  But, we are limited in our thinking.  We see the present only.  God sees all - the beginning, middle, and end.  I believe we will see Mr. Maisu, completely healthy, in heaven.  I believe God is gracious enough to give my biological father time to submit to Him.  God is loving, patient, forgiving, and just.  I praise Him!

Warning:  Be dead to sin and alive in Christ.  This is truly living.  You'll know it when you experience it.  Desire the things of God, not of this world.  Money just brings problems.  The more money you get, the more pride, greed, and loneliness you'll receive.  Your desire and dependency on God diminishes.  Wake up!  God desires to give us what is truly valuable.  There's the story of the blind man, where Jesus spits in dirt to make a salve to plaster on the man's eyes.  He told the blind man to go wash it off and his sight would be restored.  In Revelation, Christ is speaking of spiritual blindness.  He can help us see that our worldly desires are for Satan's bait, which leads to eternal death.  Let us taste and see that God is good and wants us to have eternal life.

Reward:  Christ can present us before the Father as holy and blameless.  Though our sins be as scarlet, we will be "dressed in white".  We will be with God forever in the heavenly temple.  He will seal us, spiritually, with His name.  He claims us.  The devil is trying to claim us as well.  Don't give him a foothold.  We now suffer with Christ, on this earth.  In heaven, we will reign with Christ.

I Chronicles 20 (NIV)

Summary:

The Capture of Rabbah
Verses 1-3

Springtime is when the kings went out to war.  Joab led the Israelite army, laid waste to Ammon, and besieged Rabbah.  David remained in Jerusalem.  Rabbah was left in ruins after Joab's attack.  David went and took King Molech's crown, which was 1 talent (~75 pounds) of gold, set with precious stones.  The crown was placed on David's head (and then he died of a broken neck...that was a joke.  I couldn't help it...)  They plundered the city, consigned the people to labor, with saws, iron picks, and axes.  This was done to all of the Ammonite towns.  Then, David and his army returned to Jerusalem.

War With the Philistines
Verses 4-8

Over time, war broke out with the Philistines, at Gezer.  There were three battles:  Israel vs. Philistia -

1.  Sibbecai the Hushathite vs. Sippai, a descendant of the Rephaites
     Israel - 1; Philistia - 0
2.  Elhanan son of Jair vs. Lahmi, brother of Goliath the Gittite, with spear and shaft like a weaver's rod
     Isreal - 2; Philistia - 0
3.  Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother vs. a Philistine with 6 fingers & toes on each hand & foot
     Israel - 3; Philistia - 0

All Philistines were descendants of Rapha from Gath.  They all fell at the feet of David and his men.

Lori's Thoughts:

First of all, I'm amazed that anyone can stand to have 75 pounds on their head for any amount of time.  That's the equivalent of a large child!  I'm sure it was a beautiful crown, but really?!  I heard that Adam was like 12 feet tall (*there is no Biblical evidence of this, though), so maybe he could have handled such a crown.  But, David was alive post-flood, which I heard resulted in people growing to be less tall (*also, no Biblical evidence).  Either way, that's impressive.

Secondly, I think the ruin of Ammon is a good example of how God's prophecy for David's rule came true.  "You will rule them with an iron scepter; you will dash them to pieces like pottery."  (Psalm 2:9)  This reminds me of the prophecy about Jesus.  "The Lord says to my Lord: 'Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'"  (Psalm 110:1)  "But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God.  Since that time He waits for His enemies to be made His footstool..."  (Hebrews 10:12-13).

I don't agree with forced labor in our day.  But, our world works differently now than in David's time.  We have individual relationships with God.  There's no longer a holy nation versus evil nations.  God isn't asking us to do what David did.  We are to fight against the spiritual enemy, that is Satan and his demons.  "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."  (Ephesians 6:12)  This doesn't mean that evil reigns in heaven, but that the devil is not bound to earth.  He can travel to heaven.  He does so to petition for our demise.  (See the book of Job.)

The second half of the chapter symbolize our spiritual warfare.  As we grow in faith, the devil sends demons to attack us.  We stand and conquer with God.  The devil then sends bigger and uglier things our way.  But, we have God who is the biggest and scariest contender.  His name alone makes the demons flee.  "The seventy-two returned with joy and said, 'Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.'"  (Luke 10:17)   "He replied...'However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.' "  (Luke 10:19-20)  Don't take His name lightly.

If things seem to be going worse - financial crises, health problems, car issues, etc. - don't let anyone make you think it's because you lack faith or that it's a punishment for your sins.  It may be that you have such great faith as to piss off the devil.  Stand!  You know who has the victory and He's on your side!  Remember, if you feel like you're not moving with God, standing with God is a victory in itself.

Revelation 2 (NIV)

Summary:

To the Church in Ephesus
Verses 1-7

Description of Christ:  Holds 7 stars in His right hand, walks among 7 golden lampstands
Praise:  For their deeds, hard work, perseverance; do not tolerate wicked men; tested and found false apostles; endured hardship for His name; hate Nicolaitan practices, as He does
Warning:  Had forsaken their 1st love - must remember the height from which they fell; must repent and return to their initial deeds, or He will remove their lampstand
Reward"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 7a); to them that overcome - He will give the right to eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God

To the Church in Smyrna
Verses 8-11

Description of Christ:  The First and the Last, died and came back to life
Praise:  Despite their afflictions and poverty, they are rich
Warning:  He knows the slander of those who say they're Jews, but are a synagogue of Satan (that is, these "Jews" were slandering the Church of Smyrna); don't fear what they're (Smyrna) about to suffer - the devil will put some of them in prison to test them; some will be persecuted for 10 days
Reward:  Be faithful, even to the point of death; He will give you the crown of life; "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 11a); to them that overcome - they won't be hurt at all by the 2nd death

To the Church in Pergamum
Verses 12-17

Description of Christ:  Has a sharp, double-edged sword
Praise:  They live where Satan has his throne, but remain true to God's name; they did not renounce their faith, even when His faithful witness, Antipas, was put to death in their city, where Satan lives
Warning:  Some follow the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and to practice sexual immorality; some follow the practices of the Nicolaitans; repent or He will soon come and fight them with the sword of His mouth
Reward"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 17a); to them that overcome, He will give them some of the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the individual receiving it

To the Church in Thyatira
Verses 18-29

Description of Christ:  Son of God; eyes like blazing fire, feet like burnished bronze; searches our hearts and minds and will repay us according to our deeds
Praise:  Knows their deeds, love, faith, service, perseverance, and that they're now doing more than what they had initially done
Warning:  They tolerate Jezebel, the self-proclaimed "prophetess", who misleads His servants into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols.  God had given her time to repent, but she is unwilling.  He will cast her onto a bed of suffering.  Those that commit adultery with her will suffer intensely, unless they repent.  He will strike Jezebel's children dead, then all the churches will know that He is the searcher of hearts.
Reward:  Those that do not hold to her teachings and haven't learned Satan's so-called "deep secrets", God will not impose more burdens on them.  Hold on to what you have until He returns.  Those that overcome and do His will, He will give authority over the nations, as He has received authority from His father.  " 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; He will dash them to pieces like pottery...' " (Psalm 2:9; Verse 27a)   He will also give them the morning star.  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." (Verse 29)

Lori's Thoughts:

Another Summary

Description of Jesus Christ:  He holds the 7 stars and walks among the 7 golden lampstands.  These are the 7 angels and 7 churches, respectively (see Revelation 1 posting).  He has a sharp, double-edged sword in His mouth.  This is a symbol of the Word of God.  "Take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."  (Ephesians 6:17).  He is the First and the Last.  "In the beginning was the Word...and the Word was God."  (I John 1:1 New American Standard Version)  "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."  (Matthew 28:20b)  Christ died and came back to life.  He is the Son of God.  His eyes are like blazing fire and His feet are like burnished bronze.  He is the searcher of hearts and the repayer (I just made that word up) of deeds.

We have chosen salvation, but we must reap what we have sown.  "The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."  (Galatians 6:8)  If we have opened doorways for the devil to have access to us, then ask God to close those doorways, after you have accepted Him as your Savior and Master.  You can be sure the devil will be pissed off and attack you for shutting him out.  Ask God for the strength to stand and accept the consequences of your previous actions.

I opened doorways for the devil through the occult - horoscopes, studying my astrological sign, having my tarot cards read, listening to rock music used in devil worship (even though this is not what I was consciously doing).  The Holy Spirit instructed me to destroy all articles associated with the occult - CDs, books, writings on astrology, DVDs, and a t-shirt with my sign on it.  I then asked God to bind the demons, expel them, and close any doorways to the devil.  I will not go into the details, but I have been attacked, spiritually, by demons, as recently as two days ago.  But, I know who holds me and sustains me.  He has always seen me through and will see me through in the future, for as long as I desire and choose Him.  (If you would like further reading about expelling sin from your life, I encourage you to read "Prepare for War" by Rebecca Brown ***only if you are already reading the Bible daily.)

Praise:  What Jesus praised the churches for are what we should practice now.  We should work hard and persevere in our faith.  We should not tolerate wickedness, such as being around people that sin, even if we're not participating.  "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.  I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  Against such things there is no law.  Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."  (Galatians 5:19-25)

We should test the spirits.  Don't believe everyone claiming to know Jesus.  Christ Himself just told us who He is.  Don't be deceived by anyone claiming He is anything more or less.  Although we live in the world, Satan's domain, we must stay true to our Father in heaven by what we do and believe.  Keep your faith, especially when things go wrong.  Love, serve others, and grow in faith.

Warning:  Likewise, we can learn from these churches about what to avoid.  We should not forget where we started from, becoming prideful and thinking that we're better than other sinners.  We should not be involved in idolatry or sexual immorality.  We shouldn't fear persecution, because Christ has promised to be with us always.   We should be wary to not be deceived by those claiming to be prophets or apostles.  This is why we must test the spirits.  If we do not repent of our sinful ways, we will suffer and be struck down by Christ.  He is patient, even with Jezebel.  If we reject Him, as she did, we will pay the price - death.

Reward:  This is what we have to look forward to, if we stick with Christ through the end.  We will be with God in paradise and eat from the tree of life.  That is, we will live forever.  We will not experience the second death.  (See I Thessalonians 4:13-18)  We will also eat manna, which is the bread of heaven.  (See Exodus 16:15)  We will receive a new name on a white stone and a crown of life.  For our perseverance, Christ will hold back more persecution, to help us stand.  We will receive authority over nations and the morning star.  (I'm not sure about the meaning of these two, but they're from God and I know He is good, so what He gives us is good.)

Other Thoughts

I googled the Nicolaitans, but what I found I cannot verify as fact.  These are educated opinions.  The English meaning of this Greek word is "conquerors of the lay people".  In other words, those in authority over regular Joes and Janes.  This may refer to the hierarchy of some churches, that place people in authority to mediate between them and God.  Christ is the only mediator, since He abolished the old covenant (the one given in Moses' time) when He died on the cross.  Another interpretation of the Nicolaitans are people that practice sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols.

Sexual immorality is a main theme in this chapter.  Now, sex is a gift from God.  God gave Eve to Adam, because He knew Adam was lonely.  Adam and Eve had sex as husband and wife.  Sexual immorality is anything else aside from how God intended it to be.  If you pay attention to the news, you can see how the devil is using demons of lust to attack Christians.  It has now become a joke that priests and children are a bad combination.  [The devil wants you to believe that you will experience no pleasure with God.  Not so!  If anyone has interest in our well-being and enjoyment, it is God!  For example, I heard this great analogy a little while ago - God did not have to give us taste buds when He created us.  We don't need to taste to nourish our bodies.  But, He wanted us to enjoy the food He provided for us, so He gave us the ability to taste.]  The demons of lust are the most prevalent.  Surrender your temptations to Christ.  He will fulfill you in His time and in His way.  "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!  Amen."  (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Another theme is the repetition of the verse:  "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."  We need to train ourselves to listen to God's voice.  I am learning how to differentiate between my voice, the negative thoughts the devil puts in my head, and the instructions God gives me.  During my Bible studies, or throughout my day (during which I talk to God as a friend), ideas occur to me and they just make sense.  I don't hear a voice or have visions, I just know.  The problem I have is when I think something and I'm not sure where it came from.  I'm pretty sure those are my thoughts, which are confusing.  I think I've gotten pretty good at recognizing the devil's thoughts, after having been plagued by them during my 25 years of depression.  Here's some words of encouragement - the devil can't read your mind while you are in communication with God.  So, "pray continually."  (I Thessalonians 5:17)

Christ quotes a verse from Psalm, in verse 27.  God promised David that He would make him king over Israel, and that " 'He will rule them with an iron scepter; He will dash them to pieces like pottery...' ".  (Psalm 2:9)  Christ prophesies that those that overcome will also rule.  We will dash the nations like pottery...  the only thing I can think of to explain this is humility before God.

I commend you if you stuck through this long posting.  Take it to heart.  Search for yourself God's instructions for you.  Grace, peace, joy, and love be your in Christ!
