III John (NIV)

Summary:

Verses 1-14

John writes this letter to Gaius, whom he loves in the truth.  He prays for Gaius' good health, that everything goes well with him, and that his soul progresses.  John is filled with joy because of the brothers' report of Gaius' faithfulness to them, although he does not know them.  The brothers told the church of Gaius' love.

John encourages Gaius to send the brothers on their way in a manner worthy of God.  It was for His Name's sake that the brothers went out, receiving no help from the pagans.  Therefore, we should be hospitable to the people of faith so that we can work together for the truth.

John had written to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with the apostles.  If John visits, he will call attention to Diotrephes' malicious gossip, refusal to welcome the brothers, for stopping those that want to welcome them, and kicking these welcomers out of the church.  John writes that Gaius should imitate good and not evil.  Those that do good are from God.  Those that do evil have not seen God.

Demetrius is well spoken of, even by the truth itself.  The apostles approve of him, and Gaius knows that the apostles' testimony is true.

John has more to say, but prefers to do so face to face.  He wishes Gaius peace.  The friends also send their greetings, and John tells Gaius to greet the friends there by name.

Lori's Thoughts:

Like John, we should pray for the progress of our souls, that we may continue to grow in faith through the Holy Spirit.  We should help take care of each other, because we know that those that are not of God reject those that are.  If we don't, no one will.

"Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it."  (Hebrews 13:2)

When I was a teenager, there was a homeless and mentally handicapped man that visited our church once.  The elders were quick to kick him out, but quick to welcome the rich.  My mother believes that this man was an angel, sent to test us.  As a church, we failed.

You will know whom people serve by how they love others.  We should imitate those that feed, clothe, house, heal, and pray for others.  This is how we love.

" 'Then the King will say to those on His right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."..."I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."' " (Matthew 25: 34-36, 40)

You can be sure others are watching what you do.  If you're right with God, this shouldn't make you feel guilty, but rather responsible.  We should set an example for others.

" 'You are the light of the world.  A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.' "  (Matthew 5: 14-16)

I Chronicles 16 (NIV)

Summary:

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
Verses 1-6

The Israelites brought the ark to the tent David had pitched for it.  David presented burnt and fellowship offerings to God.  He then blessed the people in the name of the Lord.  David gave every man and woman a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins.  (I want some!)  David appointed some Levites to minister before the ark, to make petition, and to give thanks and praise to God.

Chief: Asaph - played the cymbals
2nd: Zecheriah - played the lyre or harp (I believe)
The Rest: Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and Jeiel (another Jeiel?)        - played the lyres and harps
Priests: Benaiah & Jahaziel - blew the trumpets at regular intervals before the ark of the covenant of God

David's Psalm of Thanks
Verses 7-43

(David's song of praise is quite eloquent and beautiful.  I've summed up the meaning, but encourage you to read how he expresses gratitude to God through poetry in the actual chapter.)

-Thanks God because we can call on His name.
-Praises God, attributing  to Him glory and strength.  Those that seek Him will rejoice.  He produces wonders, miracles, and judgments.  He always remembers His covenant - to provide Israel the land of Canaan as an inheritance.  The Israelites wandered in search of their land, but God prevented anyone from harming them or His prophets.
-Encourages us to praise Him.  We should sing, proclaim His salvation, declare His glory and action in our lives.
-Praises God, calling Him great.  God is to be feared above all gods, all idols.  Our God made the heavens.  He has splendor, majesty, strength, joy, and glory.  "Tremble before Him, all the earth!" (Verse 30a)  He firmly established the earth.  Let heaven and earth rejoice.  Let the nations say that the Lord reigns!  The sea, the fields, and the trees of the forest will sing for joy to God, because He comes to judge the earth.  (Imagine worshiping God with all of heaven and with nature - euphoria is what comes to mind.)
-"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever." (Verse 34)  (Song for today - "Forever" by Chris Tomlin...listen to it on YouTube.)
-Tells us to cry out to God for salvation, for deliverance, so we can give thanks to His holy name and we can glory in His praise.

The people responded with "Amen" and "Praise the Lord".  David then went to minister before the ark, according to each day's requirements.  He went to the Lord's tabernacle (house of worship) at the high place in Gibeon.  He presented burnt offerings every morning and evening in accordance with the Law.  With him were Heman, Jeduthan, and those chosen by name to give thanks to God.  Heman and Jeduthun sounded the trumpets, cymbals, and other instruments for the sacred song.  The sons of Jeduthun were stationed at the gate.  Then, everyone went home and David went to bless his family.

Lori's Thoughts:

Imagine what life must have been like in David's day.  I wish more worship services were like his.  Taking time to remember why you have a relationship with God.  Tell Him how He's awesome.  Recommit yourself to Him.  Make a joyful noise and celebrate!

I attended several churches that sang mournful hymns, the pastor told us what not to do, but never what we should do, and nobody interacted with each other.  We sat and listened, then went home.

Currently, I attend a service that is more like what David had.  They encourage us to greet each other, we rock out in praise songs, with drums, guitars, keyboards, and saxophones, and the message is interactive.  Afterwards, we can pray with each other or just talk.  Also, they have ministries for the homeless and for prisoners.  They actually pay attention to God's second commandment (the New Testament one) to love others.  I love my new "church".  It's called Gateway Fellowship, in Takoma Park, Maryland.  If you're interested, here's the website:  http://mygatewayfellowship.com/  Also, you can hear about the program and the musical artists that we have come once a month: WGTS 91.9 FM.

I think this chapter also provides a great example on how to pray:
-Petition - lay down your sins
-Thanksgiving - be grateful for what God has brought you through, whether it's high or low points
-Praise - tell God how awesome He is
-Tremble - pay your respects.  Don't forget with whom your speaking - the Almighty God, Creator of All, Destroyer of Evil.

Also, it is important to share the Holy Spirit with the people God has placed in your life.  David sets this example when He blesses the Israelites, then he goes home to bless his family.  Who have you blessed lately?

II John (NIV)

Lori's Thoughts:

This is a letter to a woman.  John refers to her as the chosen lady.  I think he is referring to Mary, the mother of Jesus.  She was chosen for an extremely unique role in the plan of salvation.  Later, John writes of her chosen sister, which I believe is her cousin, Elizabeth, who played a significant role in preparing for the first coming of Christ.

In this letter, John writes about following God's command to love others.  He writes about the antichrist - anyone that doesn't acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God.  Those deceivers (demons) in human form are not to be welcomed in our homes.

John encourages her and us to stand firm in what we've been taught.  Many times we expect miracles and wonders to come our way once we've accepted Christ.  Sometimes we receive persecution for our faith and we suffer.  We may become frustrated and think we're not making progress with God.  Not so!  Standing with God is a victory, especially when our foundation is shaking.

Keep standing.  The night is darkest before the sun comes up.

Summary:

Verses 1-13

John writes to the chosen lady and her children, whom he loves in the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever.  He wishes her grace, mercy, and peace from God, which results from truth and love.  John has joy because some of her children walk in the truth as God commanded.  He reminds her of the old command - to love one another.  Love is walking in obedience to God.  John tells her and us to "walk in love". (Vs. 6b)

Many deceivers who do not acknowledge Christ have come in the flesh in our world.  These are the antichrists.  John warns us to ensure that we don't lose what we've worked for, so we can receive our full reward.  Those that run ahead and stop obeying Christ's teachings do not have God.  Those that continue in their faith have the Father and the Son.

We are not to welcome anyone that doesn't carry these teachings.  If we welcome them into our houses, we share in their wicked work.

John has more to say, but will visit instead of write, so that they can share in their joy.  The children of her chosen sister send their greetings as well.

I Chronicles 15 (NIV)

Summary:

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
Verses 1-29

When David finished constructing his buildings in the City of David, he pitched a tent for the ark of God.  He said that only the Levites could carry the ark, because the Lord had chosen them for this and to minister before Him forever.  David assembled the Israelites in Jerusalem for the ceremony.  He called up the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:

of Kohath's descendants - Uriel the leader and 120 relatives
of Merari's descendants - Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives
of Gershon's descendants - Joel the leader and 130 relatives
of Elizaphan's descendants - Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives
of Hebron's descendants - Eliel the leader and 80 relatives
of Uzziel's descendants - Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives

David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, along with the leaders of the Levites listed above, and instructed them to consecrate themselves and bring up the ark.  They hadn't inquired of God about the proper way to do this before (which is why Uzzah had died).

The Levites did as God had instructed them through David.  They carried the ark on poles on their shoulders as Moses commanded them, according to the word of the Lord.

David told the Levite leaders to appoint their brothers as singers of joyful songs, accompanied by lyres, harps, and cymbals:

- leaders, sounded the bronze cymbals - Heman son of Joel; Asaph son of Berekiah; and Ethan son of  Kushaiah, the Merarite
- next in rank, gatekeepers, played the lyres according to the alamoth (probably a musical term) - Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, and Maaseiah
- also in the 2nd rank, gatekeepers, played the harps according to the sheminith - Mattithiah, Eliphelehu (my favorite name in this chapter), Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah
- Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of singing, because he was skillful at it
- Berekiah, Elkanah, Obed-Edom, and Jehiah - doorkeepers of the ark
- Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer the priests blew the trumpets before the ark of God

David, the elders, and commanders of units of thousands went to bring up the ark from Obed-Edom's house with rejoicing.  They sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams to the Lord for helping the Levites carry the ark of the covenant.  David, Kenaniah, the Levites, and singers were clothed in a robes of fine linen.  David also wore a linen ephod (apron).  As the ark entered the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window.  When she saw David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart. (What a scrooge!)

Lori's Thoughts:

God has made each of us unique.  We're like snowflakes - no two are exactly identical.  Not even identical twins are exactly alike.  God wants us to use our individual talents for Him.  That's how we will live to our fullest potential.  This is what the Israelites were doing as they made music to God.  I bet it was amazing to see this moving choir and orchestra led by a fearsome warrior.

The ark of the covenant was where God dwelled on Earth.  His people were to atone for their sins through sacrifices of animals.  They were to serve God and follow His instructions.  God would then bless, protect, and guide them.  When Christ made the ultimate sacrifice, a new covenant was made.  All we have to do is say yes or no.  If we say yes, the Holy Spirit resides in our hearts.  We can inquire of God without a human priest, because Christ is our High Priest.  Once you've accepted Him as your Savior, you've just entered into a covenant with God.  Acceptance for salvation from sin.  Protection.

However, God also wants to be the leader of our lives.  We should ask Him to guide our every move.  Only then will we live fully and bring others to Him by our example.  Don't stop at Savior, let Him be your Lord.  Our lack of faith keeps us holding on to the steering wheel of our lives.  We rely on our human senses and try to dodge one hazard after another.  Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don't.  If you let go, you won't be able to use your senses.  You just have to trust.  I'm sure God would say something like - you don't even need this car; let me teach you how to fly.  All I know is, I want in!

I John 5 (NIV)

Summary:

Faith in the Son of God
Verses 1-12

Everyone that believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.  Everyone who loves the Father also loves His child.  This is how we know that we love God's children - we love God and we carry His commands.  His commands are not burdensome.  Everyone born of God overcomes the world, thus we have gained victory  over the world and over our faith.  Only those that believe in Jesus as God's son overcomes the world.

Jesus Christ came by water and the blood.  The Spirit testifies because the Spirit is truth.  These three testify - the Spirit, the water, and the blood.  These Three are in agreement.

We accept man's testimony, so we accept God's testimony all the more.  Anyone that believes in the Son of God has this testimony in their hearts.  Those that don't believe in Christ makes God out to be a liar.  The testimony is this: "God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son." (Verse 11b)

If we have the Son, we have life.  If we don't have the Son, we don't have life.

Concluding Remarks
Verses 13-21

John writes to those who believe in Christ, so that we can know that we have eternal life.  We have confidence in approaching God - if we ask for anything according to His will, He hears us.  If we know that He hears us, we know that we have whatever we ask for.

If we see someone sin in a manner that does not lead to death, we should pray and God will give them life.  There is a sin that leads to death.  All wrongdoing is sin, but not all sin leads to death.  Anyone born of God stops sinning.

The one born of God keeps us safe and the evil one cannot harm us.  We know we're God's children and the whole world is under the control of the evil one.  We know the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so we can know Him who is true.  We are in Him, that is Christ, the true God and the eternal life.

"Dear children, keep yourselves from idols."  (Verse 21)

Lori's Thoughts:

If we don't choose God as our Lord, we automatically gain the devil as our lord, by default.  Don't kid yourself.  We know the opposite of good and of life.  We think submission to God is slavery - dryness and dullness.  Sin is enticing.  (If you believe this, then I know you can't have experienced a relationship with God yet.)

Taste and see that God is good!  Don't judge it unless you try it.  Stop looking at others to define spirituality or religion for you.  They're wrong!  Experience it for yourself.

Choose, today, whom you will serve!  There is still time to decide.  The only thing that will guarantee your eternal damnation is putting anyone or anything else where God should be in your life.  This is idolatry.  Choose to live and to love deeply.  Ask God to help you jump.  It's like sky-diving or jumping off a cliff into a river.  Live it!

I Chronicles 14 (NIV)

Summary:

David's House and Family
Verses 1-7

Hiram King of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters to build him a palace.  By this, David knew that God had established him king over Israel, and that, for the sake of Israel, the kingdom would be highly revered.

In Jerusalem, David took more wives and had more children: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.  (Isn't it funny how some names carried over into our era.  Imagine if, instead of Nathan, someone thought they should make Beeliada popular...)

David Defeats the Philistines
Verses 8-17

The Philistines heard that David was now king, and they searched for him in full force.  David found out and went to meet them.  The Philistines had raided the Valley of Rephaim.  David inquired of God, asking if he should attack the Philistines and if God would hand them over to him.  God said He would.  So, David and his men went and defeated the Philistines.  David said " 'As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.' " (Verse 11b)  He called the place Baal Perazim, which means "the lord who breaks out".

The Philistines abandoned their gods and David ordered them burned.

The Philistines again raided the valley and again David inquired of God for instruction.  God told him not to go straight up, but to circle around and attack in front of the balsam trees.  Once David heard marching at the top of the trees, he was to move out, because the sound would signal that God had gone out in front of him to strike down the Philistines.  "So David did as God commanded him..." (Verse 16a)  They struck down the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer.  And David's fame spread throughout every land, and the Lord made the nations fear him.

Lori's Thoughts:

God encouraged David about being king by inspiring the King of Tyre to form an alliance with Israel.  And David was given a palace.  Just a small gift...

Now, I don't understand why it was custom for the men of that time to have several wives.  I don't want to share my husband (the one I will have eventually).  But, it's not something God commanded.  God condemns cheating and unfaithfulness.  As for the multiple wives, I'll just have to ask Him about it when we go Home.

Isn't it awesome what teamwork is like with God?  God is the coach, David is the captain, and the army are the players.  David asked God what move he should play in this game of Israelites vs. Philistines.  David made a suggestion, God said "I support it", and the army looked up to David as their leader and went for it.  And they won.  What was their victory dance?  I'd like to think of the idol burning as the gatorade dumping on the coach.  Both gestures say, hey, coach, you're the Man and I salute you.

Now, the last few verses I want to pay particular attention to.  Trouble came around again.  David didn't complain.  He wasn't afraid.  He remembered how God had delivered them in the past.  David asked God for guidance, knowing He'd never steer him wrong.  This time, God had a different tactic.  David didn't question God and say, my idea worked last time.  He trusted God with his whole heart and obeyed God.  They succeeded again and became known as the best team in their country (really, the whole world).

Obedience to God is not slavery from fun and living.  Obedience to God is freedom from destruction.  It is an empowerment to live to the fullest.  Yes, trouble will come.  But, God is with us to help us conquer and live.

I John 4 (NIV)

Summary:

Test the Spirits
Verses 1-6

Don't believe every spirit; test them to see if they're from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  Every spirit that acknowledges that Christ came into the flesh from God is the Spirit of God.  Every spirit that doesn't acknowledge Christ is a spirit of the antichrist.  The antichrist spirits will come and some are already in the world.

We are children of God and have overcome them "...because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." (Verse 4b)  They speak from the world's viewpoint, because they are of the world, and the world listens to them.  We are from God and whoever knows God listens to us (the apostles).  Whoever isn't from God doesn't listen to us.  This is how we know the Spirit of truth versus the spirit of falsehood.

God's Love and Ours
Verses 7-21

Let us love one another, because love comes from God.  Everyone that loves has been born of God and knows God.  Whoever doesn't love, doesn't know God, because God is Love.

"This is how God showed His love among us:  He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.  This is love:  not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice (the One who could turn aside God's wrath) for our sins." (Verses 9-10)

Since God loves us so, we should love others.  No one has seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.  We know this because He gave us the Spirit.

The apostles testify that they have seen the Son, whom God sent to be the Saviour of the world.  If we acknowledge Christ as God's Son, God lives in us and us in God.  We know and rely on the love God has for us.  Love is made complete among us, so we'll have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world, we're like Him.

"There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love." (Verse 18)

We love because He first loved us.  If anyone claims to love God, but hates another human, they are a liar.  Anyone that doesn't love others, whom they've seen, can't love God, whom they can't see.  God has given us this command: whoever loves God must love others.

Lori's Thoughts:

God has given us the ability to discern good from evil.  Some call it intuition, others call it "getting vibes" from someone.  You know how children and animals react to good or bad people?  Children don't let their intellect interfere and make them doubt.  They don't tell themselves they're overreacting or being paranoid.  In The Gift of Fear, by Gavin De Becker, he writes about how animals react to our reactions to good or bad people.  Our pets sense what we're feeling, whether we acknowledge our feelings or not.  Now, De Becker is writing about criminals that cause physical harm.  John is writing about spirits.  It's the same concept, except John's is harder for people to grasp, because it deals with the unseen.  Trust the God in you to know who is a friend and who is an enemy.  A strong child of God will rebuke an enemy and lead them to repentance and acceptance of God.  There may not be the use of words, but rather a living example of someone on fire for God.

It is always encouraging to be reminded that our God is greater than any evil.  And He is with us.  Not only with us, but in us.  Don't you feel stronger?

I was walking to the train this morning, and I felt discouraged and lonely.  God asked me what was bothering me.  I started complaining about my busy schedule, my almost non-existent social life, blah-blah...  Then God showed me that He was walking right beside me, with His arm around my shoulders.  And all my troubles fluttered away.  Try it sometime!  Talk and listen to your Best Friend.  He understands and cares.

Song 1 for today: "Our God" by Chris Tomlin (Go YouTube it.)

In the second half of the chapter, the plan of salvation is summarized.  Yesterday, I wrote about the wrath of God breaking out against Uzzah.  David feared God because of it.  Since Jesus came, He turned God's wrath away from us when He died on the cross.  Once He returned Home, He sent us the Holy Spirit to live through us.  If we accept Jesus as our Saviour and let God transform us by the power of the Spirit - there will be a lot more love in our lives.  Love without fear.  We will be confident on Judgment Day, because we're already His.

Go light your world with your newfound good news.

I Chronicles 13 (NIV)

Summary:

Bringing Back the Ark
Verses 1-14

David conferred with his officers, the commanders of hundreds and thousands.  He spoke with the assembly of Israel, asking if it seemed good and if it was God's will to unite all the Israelites to retrieve the ark of the covenant.  They had not inquired of it (used it for guidance) during Saul's reign.  All the people agreed that this was a good idea.

David assembled the Israelites from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath.  They went to Kiriath Jearim, also called Baalah of Judah, to retrieve the ark of God, who is enthroned between the cherubim.  The ark is called by the Name.  They moved the ark from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio as guides.  David and all the Israelites celebrated with all their might before God.  They sang songs and played harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.

When they reached the threshing floor of Kidon, the oxen stumbled and Uzzah reached out to steady the ark.  God's anger burned against him and he died.  David was angry because God's wrath broke out against Uzzah.  The place is now called Perez Uzzah, which means outbreak against Uzzah.  David was afraid of God and felt unworthy to bring the ark with him.  They took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.  The ark was there for three months.  The Lord blessed his household and everything he had.

Lori's Thoughts:

1.  It is good to meet with others and discuss your plans to serve God.  This will result in levelheaded decisions and promote humility.  Also, you will be supported and aided in your endeavors.  The Godhead is Three.  The Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit always confer with one another.  This is evident in Christ's life on Earth.  He was always praying to His Father.

2.  I know that David and the Israelites were overflowing with the Holy Spirit.  They celebrated with all their might.  Have you ever been so overwhelmed with joy that you couldn't help but cry out or dance?  It's the best high ever.

3.  Although Uzzah was filled with the Spirit, he was human.  Humans deserve to die, because we're sinners.  We cannot approach God without Christ.  Christ hadn't come yet to atone for us, so Uzzah died.  This is a great reminder of the magnificence of God.  He is a consuming fire that we must revere.  However, if we have accepted the Son and His gift of grace, that is salvation from sin, then we don't need to fear God's wrath.  Christ's blood has covered us.  One day, we will approach the Throne with confidence.

I John 3 (NIV)

Summary:

Children of God
Verses 1-10

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are!" (Verse 1a)

The world doesn't know us because it didn't know Him.  Now we are God's children; we don't know what we will be in the future.  But, when He appears, we'll be like Him because we'll see Him as He is.  Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies themself, as He is pure.

Sin is breaking the law.  It is lawlessness.  Christ appeared to remove our sin.  In Him there is no sin.  If we live in Him, we stop sinning.  If we continue to sin, we neither have seen or known Him.  Don't let anyone lead you astray.  If you do right, you are righteous, as He is righteous.  Those that sin are of the devil because the devil has been sinning since the beginning.

"The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work." (Verse 8b)

No one born of God continues to sin, because God's seed remains in them.

"This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love [their] brother [or sister]." (Verse 10)

Love One Another
Verses 11-24

The message we've heard from the beginning is this: we should love one another.  Don't be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one.  He murdered his brother, because his actions were evil and Abel's were righteous.  Don't be surprised if the world hates you.  We know we've passed from death into life, because we love others.  If we do not love, we remain in death.  Anyone that hates others is a murderer; no murderer has eternal life in Him.

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for [others]." (Verse 16)

If we have material possessions and see another in need, but have no pity on them, how can we have God's love?

"...let us not love with words...but with actions and in truth." (Verse 18)

This is how we know we belong to the truth and how our hearts are at rest in His presence whenever our hearts condemn us.  God is greater than our hearts and He knows all.  If our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive anything we ask, because we obey and please Him.

"And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us." (Verse 23)

If we obey His commands, we live in Him and Him in us.  We know He lives in us by the Spirit He gave us.

Lori's Thoughts:

If we stop to think about verse 1, we will be humbled.  We deserve to die, because we are wretched.  But, God deeply loves us.  I think once we truly understand this, we'll stop competing with each other and start seeing others as God does.  We're His children.

John says that once we see Him, when He returns, we will be like Him.  When Moses was given glimpses of God, his face was changed.  No one could look him directly in the face, so he wore a veil until the glory of God faded from him.  One day, we will see God and become a reflection of His glory forever.  If we were made in His image, before there was sin, maybe sin disfigured us.  When we will be in His presence, sin will be completely eradicated.  Thus, we will be refigured into what He had originally planned for us.  I'm definitely looking forward to no more pain.  My spine won't be crooked, my big toe won't be deformed, my wrists will no longer develop cysts...  But, while I'm waiting, I will lean on the Lord.  He will sustain me.

When it comes to the plan of salvation, there are only two sides.  Even if you do not choose the devil's side, if you fail to choose God's, you will automatically be on the devil's side.  There's no pretty way to say this.  You may have been deterred from following God because of someone's misrepresentation of Him.  Look at the Catholic priests you keep hearing about on the news.  My father, a devout Adventist, went to prison for domestic violence.  Neither the priests nor my father are God!  I ran from God for a few years.  Then I was inspired to discover Him for myself.  I believe that the priests and my father were religious in practice, but had no relationship with God.  Why?  Because they did not do right.  Those of us that know God, for real, naturally do right and love each other.

Let me rewrite this verse: "...let us not love with words...but with actions and in truth." (Verse 18)  True Christians spend less time talking and more time helping you with your broken down car, lending you money so you can pay for tuition, giving you their coat because you were cold, asking you if you're okay because you look sad today...  We live in a competitive world and everyone wants to feel like they matter.  But, if we stop trying to be number one and we start taking care of each other... if every person takes care of one other person, then everyone will know that they matter.  If God's love truly lives in you, you won't keep it to yourself.  You'll be so excited over this treasure that you found and want everyone else to experience it as well.  But, then you'll hit a brick wall when you realize that the world hates you and refuses to hear what you have to say about God.  It sucks.  If only they knew that He is the only answer for the weight of the world on their shoulders.  We can't tell people about God if they don't want to listen.  However, we can show them God's love by what we do.  And people are powerless against our prayers for them.  This is what John means when he tells us to lay down our lives for others.  We are no longer first.  Self-love is never as fulfilling as love for others.  Even if you only ever get loved back from one other person, that's double the love you will ever experience from loving just yourself.

I Chronicles12 (NIV)

Summary:

Warriors Join David
Verses 1-22

This is a recording of the men that went to David at Ziklag, during his banishment from Saul son of Kish.  These men helped David in battle, armed with bows and arrows.  Some could sling stones with their right or left hands.  They were also Saul's kinsmen, from the tribe of Benjamin.

Ahiezer their chief and Joash - the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite
Jeziel and Pelet - the sons of Azmaveth
Beracah - the leader and one of the Thirty
Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite
Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite
Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, Jashobeam - the Korahites
Joelah and Zebadiah - the sons of Jeroham from Gedor

Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the desert.  They were brave warriors, ready for battle, able to handle the shield and spear.  They had faces like lions and were as swift as gazelles in the mountains.

Chief: Ezer
2nd in Command: Obadiah
3rd: Eliab
4th: Mishmannah
5th: Jeremiah
6th: Attai
7th: Eliel
8th: Johanan
9th: Elzabad
10th: Jeremiah
11th: Macbannai

They were army commanders.  The least of them was a match for a hundred, and the greatest for a thousand.  They crossed the Jordan River in the first month, when it was overflowing, scattering everyone living in the valleys to the east and west.

Other Benjamites and some men from Judah also went to David in his stronghold.  David went to meet them and ask if they came in peace or betrayal.  He would unite with them or ask God to punish them, since he had committed no violence, accordingly.  The Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he claimed that they were David's and that David would have success because God would help them.  David accepted them and they became the leaders of his raiding bands.

Some men of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight Saul.  They did not help the Philistines, because after they consulted, the rulers sent David away.  They feared death if David decided to abandon them during the fight to return to his master, Saul.

When David went to Ziklag, these are the men of Manasseh who defected to him:  Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, Zillethai.  They were leaders of units of 1,000.  They helped David against raiding bands.  They were brave warriors, commanders in his army.

Every day, men joined David until he had a great and mighty army.

Others Join David at Hebron
Verses 23-40

These are the numbers of men armed for battle who went to David to turn Saul's kingdom over to him, as God had said:

6,800 men of Judah - with shield & spear
7,100 men of Simeon
4,600 men of Levi - with Jehoiada, leader of Aaron's family with 3,700, & Zadok, a brave young warrior with 22 officers from his family
3,000 men of Benjamin (Saul's kinsmen) - most had remained loyal to Saul's house until then
20,800 men of Ephraim - famous in their own clans, brave warriors
18,000 men of the half-tribe of Manasseh - designated by name to come and make David king
200 chiefs of Issachar, with all their relatives under their command, "...who understood the times and knew what Israel should do..." (Verse 32a)  (Oh, that I were as wise and brave...)
50,000 men of Zebulun - with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty
1,000 officers with 37,000 men, with shield & spear - of Naphtali
28,600 men of Dan
40,000 men of Asher - experienced soldiers
120,00 men from east of the Jordan - men of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon

(Total: 340,822)  They all volunteered to serve in the ranks.  They went to Hebron fully determined to make David king of Israel.  The rest of Israel was of one mind to make him king.  The men listed spent three days with David in the desert.  They were eating and drinking from the provisions that their families had sent.  Their neighbors, from as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, came with food, donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen.  They had plentiful supplies of flour, fig cakes, raisin cakes, wine, oil, cattle, and sheep.

There was joy in Israel.  (It would be awesome if they could experience this in the present.)

Lori's Thoughts:

A nation knew that their ruler was no longer good.  They banded together and stood for a better nation.  (Sounds a bit like Egypt.)  They wanted a new ruler, one that would protect them and help them thrive.  Look at how they flourished in the desert while banished!  Imagine what life would be like for them in their new kingdom.

As followers of Christ, we are outcasts in the world.  We believe in a Higher Power that will lead us in a world without poverty or injustice or illnesses.  We need to come together, take care of each other, and trust that our Creator will sustain us until His kingdom is established forever.

I John 2 (NIV)

Summary:

Walking in the Light
Verses 1-17

John writes this letter so that we won't sin.  If anyone does, Christ, the Righteous One, speaks on our defense to the Father.  Christ is the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.  If we obey His commands, we have come to know Him.  The one that claims to know Him, but does not obey His commands, is a liar.  If anyone obeys His word, God's love is truly made complete in them.

We know we are in Him by this: "Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did." (Verse 6)

John is writing an old command, one we've had since the beginning and have heard it before.  John is also writing a new command, because darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.  (Maybe he means that it's new because we now have a new understanding of salvation.)

Anyone claiming to be in the light, but hates their brother or sister, they are still in darkness.  Whoever loves their brother or sister lives in the light and their is nothing in them to make them stumble.  The one that hates walks in darkness and is blinded by it.  They don't know where they're going.

John writes to us "...because your sins have been forgiven on account of His name." (Verse 12b)  He writes to fathers because they have known Him who is from the beginning.  He writes to young men because they have overcome the evil one, they are strong, and the word of God lives in them.  He writes to us because we have known the Father.

Do Not Love the World
Verses 15-17

We are not to love the world or anything in it, otherwise the love of the Father is not in us.  Everything in the world, the cravings of sinful people, lust, and boasting, comes from the world, not the Father.  The world and its desires will pass away, but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

Warning Against Antichrists
Verses 18-27

This is the last hour; the antichrist is coming and many have already come.  This is how we know that it is the last hour.  The antichrists did not belong to the apostles, because they abandoned them.

We have an anointing from the Holy One and we know the truth.  John writes this letter because he knows we know the truth.  So, who is the liar?  "It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ.  Such a [person] is the antichrist - [they deny] the Father and the Son." (Verse 22b)  No one who denies the Son has the Father.  If you acknowledge the Son, you also have the Father.

Make sure that what you've heard from the beginning stays in you.  If it does, you'll remain in the Son and the Father.  "And this is what He promised us - even eternal life." (Verse 25)

John writes to us of those who are trying to lead us astray.  The anointing we received remains in us and we don't need anyone to teach us.  As His anointing teaches us about all things - His anointing is real - just as it has taught us, remain in Him.

Children of God
Verses 28-29

Continue in Him, so when He appears, we will be confident and unashamed.  If we know that He's righteous, we know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.

Lori's Thoughts:

This is the plan of salvation summarized.  We are sinners and God's wrath is against us.  Christ is our shield.  He pays the toll for our passage into eternity.  But, life in Christ is a transformation.  He didn't save us so we could live stuck in the mud.  He cleanses us.  As we get closer to God, we resemble Christ more and more.  If we claim to love God, but we still live to satisfy our selfish desires, we really don't know God.  When we really do, our attitudes and lifestyles change.  We begin to produce the fruit of the Spirit: "Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control".  (Galatians 5:22)

If we love God, we stop loving the world.  That's not to say we stop loving people or animals or nature.  We stop worshiping money, sex, and power.  Notice I said stop worshiping, not stop them altogether.  It's an attitude shift.  Loving God and loving others comes first.

John has warned us that people will come claiming that Jesus was just a man.  They will question and try to shake our faith.  We have been warned to stand firm.  Become confident in God, so when He comes, we'll have nothing to fear.  We'll probably start dancing.

I Chronicles 11 (NIV)

Summary:

David Become King Over Israel
Verses 1-3

All of Israel gathered at Hebron to see David.  They claimed to be of his own flesh and blood.  They acknowledged that David had led Israel in their military campaigns during Saul's reign.  God had told David that he would be Israel's shepherd and ruler.  The elders made a compact with David, before God, anointing him king over Israel, as God had promised through Samuel's prophecy.

David Conquers Jerusalem
Verses 4-9

David and all of Israel marched to Jerusalem, also known as Jebus.  The Jebusites said that David would never get in.  But, David captured their fortress, Zion.  He made it his residence and it was named the City of David.  David declared that whoever led the attack on the Jebusites would be his commander-in-chief.  Joab son of Zeruiah stepped up and succeeded.  David built up the city around Zion, from the supporting terraces, called the Millo, to the surrounding wall.  Joab restored the rest of the city.  David grew in power because the Lord Almighty was with him.

David's Mighty Men
Verses 10-47

The chiefs of David's mighty men, along with Israel, gave David's kingship a strong support over all the land, just as God had promised.  Jashobeam the Hacmonite was the chief of the officers.  He killed 300 men, in one encounter, with his spear.  Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite was with David at Pas Dammim when they fought the Philistines.  The Israelite troops fled into a barley field, but they stood their ground in the middle of it.  The Israelites defended the field and defeated the Philistines.  God gave them the victory.

Three of the 30 chiefs went to David, to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines encamped at the Valley of Rephaim.  David was at the stronghold and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.  David longed for water and cried out for some from the well near the gate at Bethlehem.  The Three broke through the Philistine lines and brought back some water for David.  David poured it out before God, saying that to drink it would be like drinking the blood of those who risked their lives to get it.  These are examples of the exploits of the three mighty men.

Abishai, brother of Joab, was chief of the Three.  He had also killed 300 men with his spear.  Abishai became as famous as the Three.  He was doubly honored as they were, but he was not included with the Three.

Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, and he performed great exploits.  He struck down two of Moab's best men.  He went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.  He struck down a 7 1/2 foot tall Egyptian.  The Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's rod.  Ben had a club, but stole the Egyptian's spear and killed him with it.  Ben also became as famous as the Three.  He was honored above the Thirty, but was not included with the Three.  David put Benaiah in charge of his bodyguard.

These are David's mighty men:

1. Asahel, brother of Joab                                      26. Mibhar son of Hagri
2. Elhanan son of Dodo, from Bethlehem                27. Zelek the Ammonite
3. Shammoth the Harorite                                      28. Naharai the Berothite,
                                                                                    the armor-bearer of Joab
4. Helez the Pelonite                                              29. Ira the Ithrite
5. Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa                             30. Gareb the Ithrite
6. Abiezer from Anathoth                                       31. Uriah the Hittite
7. Sibbecai the Hushathite                                      32. Zabad son of Ahlai
8. Ilai the Ahohite                                                   33. Adina son of Shiza,
                                                                                   the Reubenite chief of 30
9. Maharai the Netophathite                                   34. Hanan son of Maacah
10. Heled son of Baanah, the Netophathite             35. Joshaphat the Mithnite
11. Ithai son of Ribai, from Gibeah in Benjamin       36. Uzzia the Ashterathite
12. Benaiah the Pirathonite                                     37. Shama son of Hotham,
                                                                                    the Aroerite
13. Hurai from the ravines of Gaash                        38. Jeiel, Shama's brother
14. Abiel the Arbathite                                           39. Jediael son of Shimri
15. Azmaveth the Baharumite                                 40. Joha the Tizite,
                                                                                   Jediael's brother
16. Eliahba the Shaalbonite                                     41. Eliel the Mahavite
17. the sons of Hashem the Gizonite                       42. Jeribai son of Elnaam
18. Jonathan son of Shagee, the Hararite                43. Joshaviah, Jeribai's brother
19. Ahiam son of Sacar, the Hararite                      44. Ithmah the Moabite
20. Eliphal son of Ur                                              45. Eliel
21. Hepher the Mekerathite                                   46. Obed
22. Ahijah the Pelonite                                           47. Jaasiel the Mezobaite
23. Hezro the Carmelite
24. Naarai son of Ezbai
25. Joel, the brother of Nathan

Lori's Thoughts:
You have to admit, this sounds like a movie, similar to 300 or Robin Hood.  The Israelites are the heroes, with awesome fighting skills and some crazy warriors, like the guy that killed a lion in a pit, on a snowy day.  But, their true source of power comes from the Unseen.  This Force baffles the bad guys.
The bad guys are the mutant Philistines and Egyptians.  They're uglier and bigger, but not stronger.  Maybe it's more like King Arthur.  The Thirty are like the Kights of the Round Table and the Three are like Lancelot, Arthur, and, I don't know, Galahad...

My point is this: life with God is anything but boring.  Nor is it easy.  The Israelites had to work hard to defend themselves and God's honor.  But, they were protected as long as they continued to serve Him.
Everyone has a purpose, a special skill, and God wants you to thrive as an individual, working with the rest of His children to ensure that we stay on the winning side until the ultimate battle is over.
Imagine the coolest person you could be, if you had no limitations.  Me?  I want to be a Healer.  God sees us for our potential.  Take a leap of faith and see how far He takes you.  It'll be an incredible journey.

I John 1

Summary:

The Word of Life
Verses 1-4

That which was from the beginning, the apostles saw with their eyes and touched with their hands.  They proclaim and testify to the following, in regards to the Word of Life:  the Life appeared.  The One who is Eternal Life was with the Father and appeared to them.  The apostles proclaim this so that we can have fellowship with them.  Their fellowship is with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.  John writes this to make our joy complete.

Walking in the Light
Verses 5-10

The message they heard from Him and now declare to us is this:  God is light.  In Him, there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with Him, but walk in darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with each other.

The blood of Christ purifies us from all sin.  If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and lack truth.  "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (Vs. 9)  If we claim not to have sinned, we call God a liar and His Word has no place in our lives.

Lori's Thoughts:

Imagine what it must have been like to live with Jesus, in the physical world.  I imagine we would have cooked together, shown each other how we enjoy our coffee, gone running together, talked about music and movies.  It must have been awesome for the apostles.

You know how you get vibes from people?  I have a friend who trusts no one and always expects things to go wrong.  It's difficult to stay positive around this person.  I have another friend who loves me to bits!  She cooks for me, asks me how I'm doing on a regular basis, we trade books with each other, get each other hooked on movies...and when I've done something wrong that hurts me and those I love, she makes no judgments and doesn't tell me what I should have done or should do.  She already knows that I know what I need to do.  She empathizes and loves me just the same.  I imagine Christ would be a friend like my second friend.

It's amazing how confident the apostles became because of their few years with Christ.  And they saw the world through God's eyes:  broken, but with such potential.  So, they did all they could to give us an opportunity to join in the friendship they have with Christ.  I'm taking it.  I hope you will too.

God wants us to come humbly before Him, with all of our problems and He will heal us and work on us to become confident and whole.  If we come with a "holier than thou" attitude and delude ourselves into thinking we're better than the sinners of this world - we negate the necessity of Christ.  And the devil has won in deceiving us.

When do you go to the doctor?  When you're sick or hurt.
When should you go to God?  When you're broken and ugly.

He makes all things beautiful in His time.

I Chronicles 10 (NIV)

Summary:

Saul Takes His Life
Verses 1-14

Who: Philistines vs. Israel
What: War!
Where: Mount Gilboa
When: During King Saul's Reign
Why: Saul was unfaithful to God

The Philistines slew some Israelites on Mount Gilboa and the rest of the Israelite army fled.  The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons, killing Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua.  The archers overtook Saul and wounded him.  Saul commanded his armor-bearer to run him through with his sword, so that the 'uncircumcised fellows' wouldn't torture him.  The armor-bearer was too scared to kill Saul, so Saul fell on his own sword and died.  The armor-bearer did the same.

Saul's house died together.  When the Israelites saw this and that the army had fled, they abandoned their towns and fled as well.  The Philistines then occupied the Israelite towns.

The next day, the Philistines went to strip the dead.  They found Saul and his sons on the Mount, stripped and beheaded Saul, taking his armor.  They sent messengers to tell the other Philistines about their victory, proclaiming the news among their idols and people.  They put Saul's armor in the temple of their gods and his head in the temple of Dagon.

When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what they had done to Saul, all of their valiant men retrieved his body and the bodies of his sons, taking them to Jabesh.  They buried the bones under the great tree in Jabesh and fasted for seven days.

"Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the Lord.  So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse."  (Vs. 13-14)

Lori's Thoughts:

1.  If we are fully connected to God, those that worship false gods will know the error of their ways.  If the wicked defeat us, they will believe that their gods are real.  Then all of us will perish.  Be the kind of person that leads people to light and life.

2.  I reiterate: God wants to bless us, but cannot if we stop serving Him.  If we stop serving Him, we serve the devil, whether we choose to or not.  Saul prospered when he was on fire for God.  He suffered when he began to worship himself, he was tormented by an evil spirit (read his story in the books of Samuel), and he died for his unfaithfulness.

3.  Saul sought counsel from a medium: a speaker with the spirits of the dead.  If you seek counsel from anyone but God, you seek counsel from the devil.
I was ignorant and curious.  I studied my astrological sign.  I had someone read my tarot cards.  I wanted to know if my future was better than my past and to discover if my personality was a product of my broken childhood or if I was like this by nature.  My sign is an accurate description of my personality and tendencies.  My tarot cards accurately predicted my future.  However, I opened doorways to my soul for the devil to send evil spirits to torment me.  Don't believe me?  Ask my ex-fiance' or one of my four psychologists.  Ask my brother or sisters.  BUT!  I prayed with my sisters to God, asking Him to bind and expel the evil spirits, close the doorways I had opened, forgive me of my unfaithfulness, and fill me with the Holy Spirit.

**If you do not fill yourself with God after you empty yourself of evil - it allows for more demons to attack and fill you.  Believe me, they will come back in greater force.  The devil wants to take you down.  If you are filled with God, there is no room for evil.  And God will protect you.  He is bigger and stronger.**

Don't let yourself fall as Saul did.  Saul had chances to turn back to God, but did not take them.  God is giving you a chance, right now, to return to Him or to accept Him for the first time.  If you haven't read my post on II Peter 3, I encourage you to do so.  You'll see how God is patient and merciful.

It's not too late now.  Don't wait until it is.

II Peter 3 (NIV)

Summary:

The Day of the Lord
Verses 1-18

This is Peter's second letter.  He wrote both letters to stimulate wholesome thinking.  He wants us to recall the words spoken by the holy prophets and the Lord's command spoken through the apostles.  We must understand that, in the last days, scoffers will come with their own evil desires and mock us.  They will ask where is this second coming, because they think that everything goes on as it has since creation.  They deliberately forget that "...long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.  By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.  By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly [people]." (Vs. 5b-7)

We must not forget that with God a day is like 1,000 years and 1,000 years is like a day (He is not limited by time, like we are.)  "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness.  He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." (Vs. 9)

"But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare." (Vs. 10)

What kind of people should we be, then?  We should live holy and godly lives as we look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.  On that day, the heavens and elements will by destroyed by fire.  "But in keeping with His promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness." (Vs. 13)  (A home without depression, crime, pain, or illnesses.)  Since we are looking forward to this, we should make every effort to be spotless and blameless.  We should be at peace with Him.

"Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation..." (Vs. 15a)

Paul wrote about this, with wisdom from God.  Some of Paul's writings are hard to understand for the ignorant and unstable people, who distort his letters and other Scripture, to their own destruction.  Since we already know these things, we should be on our guard so that we won't be carried away by the error of lawless [people] and fall from our secure position.  Instead, we should grow in grace and knowledge of Christ.  To Him be the glory now and forever!  Amen.

Lori's Thoughts:

It's hard to know that God is real.  He has no beginning or end, so we can't see Him.  We put too much stock into what we can define by our human standards.  I used to trust God so deeply that He was my alarm clock.  I asked Him to wake me up at a particular time and He always did.  Somehow, somewhere, I lost my way.  A few days ago, my sister told me of a woman whom God had told that He wanted to be the One to wake her up each day.  I thought about doing this again and I was overwhelmed with anxiety and fear.  What if I overslept and got to work late.  Then I'd be fired and I'd have no income and I'd have to move back to my mother's house.  I feel like I'm insulting my Creator for not trusting Him with something so simple, yet so important.  I trust my cell phone, which still works even if the power goes off.  But, what happens if my phone dies?

I haven't set my alarm since I spoke with my sister, but I wake up worried several times every night.  I'm working on it.  I want to get back to where I trusted Him completely.

Sometimes we wonder where He is and why terrible things happen, like my childhood abuse.  He was there.  And, He is here.  He is what stopped me from losing my mind or taking my life, because His plan for me is not what I went through or what you may be going through.  Peter answers the question, where is God?  He is on His Mercy Seat, giving us ample time to accept Him and His love for us.  Don't wait until He is in His Judgment Seat to turn your life around.

Last week, at Bible Study, the power went out and we were using the emergency back-up lights.  One by one, they started going out until only one was left.  I didn't want to be in the church's basement in pitch black.  But, I decided to trust that God was with us.  As we said our closing prayer, the last light went out.

This got me thinking.  We should be praying as the world ends and the light burns out.  It may be too late if we start to pray afterwards.  We need to be connected with God to stand firm in the last days of scoffers, antichrists, and spiritual warfare.  Get ready; Jesus is coming.  Do what you must to trust Him with your life.

I Chronicles 9 (NIV)

Summary:

All of Israel has been listed in the genealogies recorded in the book of the kings of Israel.

The People in Jerusalem
Verses 1-34

The people of Judah were taken captive to Babylon, because of their unfaithfulness.  These are the first people to resettle in their own property, in their own towns.  Some were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.  From Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh that lived in Jerusalem:

- Uthai* <- Ammihud* <- Omri* <- Imri* <- Bani... <- Perez* <- Judah
~ the Shilonites: +Asaiah and his sons
     ~ the Zerahites: Jeuel
     ~ 690 people from Judah
- Benjamites: Shallu* <- Meshullam* <- Hodaviah* <- Hassenuah
                     Ibneiah* <- Jeroham
                     Elah* <- Uzzi* <- Micri
                     Meshullam* <- Shephatiah* <- Reuel* <- Ibnijah
~ 956 people, all heads of their families
- Priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jakin, Azariah
~ Azariah* <- Hilkiah* <- Meshullam* <- Zadok* <- Meraioth* <- Ahitub: the official in charge of the house of God
     ~ Adaiah* <- Jeroham* <- Passhur* <- Malkijah
     ~ Maasai* <- Adiel* <- Jahzerah* <- Meshullam* <- Meshillemith* <- Immer
~ 1,760 people; able men, responsible for ministering in God's house
-Levites: Shemaiah* <- Hasshub* <- Azrikam* <- Hashabiah the Merarite
     ~ Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, Mattaniah
     ~ Mattaniah* <- Mica* <- Zicri* <- Asaph
     ~ Obadiah* <- Shemaiah* <- Galal* <- Jeduthun
~ Berekiah* <- Asa* <- Elkanah: they lived in the villages of the Netophathites
-Gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brothers
~ Shallum was the chief, stationed at the King's Gate on the East side, up to the present (when this book was written).
~ Levite gatekeepers: Shallum* <- Kore* <- Ebiasaph* <- Korah and the fellow gatekeepers from his family, the Korahites.  They were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the Tent (temple) as their fathers were responsible for guarding the entrance to the Lord's dwelling.
~ In earlier times, Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the gatekeepers and the Lord was with him.
~ Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper to the Tent of Meeting.
~ 212 gatekeepers at the threshholds: They were registerd by genealogy in their villages, assigned to positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer.  They and their descendants guarded the gates of the house of God, that is the Tent.  They were stationed on the four sides, East, West, North, and South.  Their brothers from other villages, on occasion, would come to share their duties for 7 days at a time.
~ The four principal gatekeepers were the Levites, entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.  They would spend the night stationed around His house, because they guarded it and were in charge of the key to open it each morning.
~ Some were in charge of the articles used in the temple service, counting what was brought in and what was brought out.  Others were assigned to care for the furnishings, other sanctuary articles, the flour, wine, oil, incense, and spices.  Some of the priests were in charge of mixing the spices.
~ Mattithiah the Levite, firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was in charge of baking the offering bread.  Some of the Kohathite brothers were in charge of preparing the bread set out every Sabbath.
~ The musicians, who were heads of the Levite families, stayed in rooms of the temple, exempt from other duties, because they were responsible for their work day and night.
These were all heads of the Levite families and chiefs, as listed in their genealogy.  They all lived in Jerusalem.

Lori's Thoughts:

God's people were separated from Him, so they lost what God had blessed them with - homes, livestock, horses, silver, gold, bronze, etc.  But, the story doesn't end here.  Some were able to return to their homes.  Maybe these people returned to their faith.  Either way, God was merciful.  He wants us to come back to Him so He can care for us.

I would think that the temple rituals would give the people a constant reminder of their relationship with God.  I know I'd be honored to be given a job specifically for Him, using a skill unique to me.  But, sometimes people lose the relationship with the ritual.  They believe the ritual is what will save them.  If this were true, there would be no need for Jesus Christ.  God wants your heart, not just a show.

We have been given Saul's lineage again.  This means, pay attention!  Something important is about to be shown.

II Peter 2 (NIV)

Summary:

False Teachers and Their Destruction
Verses 1-22

There were false prophets among the teachers, as there are false teachers among us.  They secretly introduce destructive heresies (teachings against what Jesus taught).  They deny the sovereign Lord who bought them and they are bringing swift destruction on themselves.

"Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute." (Vs. 2)  (This is why so many people are against church, religion, or spirituality - They have seen and been hurt by misrepresentations of the gospel.)

Out of their greed, they exploit made-up stories.  Their condemnation has been hanging over them and their destruction has not been sleeping.

God didn't spare the angels that sinned.  They were sent to hell, locked in gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment.  God didn't spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on the ungodly.  But, He protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others.  God condemned Sodom and Gomorrah, burning them to ashes.  This is an example of what will happen to the ungodly.  But, God rescued Lot, a righteous man, distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men.  Therefore, God knows how to rescue godly people from trials and hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment and  their punishment.  This is especially true for those that follow the corrupt desire of sinful nature, who despise authority.  These people are bold and arrogant.  They slander celestial (heavenly) beings.  Even angels, who are stronger and more powerful, do not do this in God's presence.

These people blaspheme what they don't understand.  They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed.  They will perish.  They will be paid back with harm for the harm that they have done.  Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight.  They are blots and blemishes, reveling in pleasures as they feast among us.  Their eyes are full of adultery, they never stop sinning, they seduce the unstable, they are experts in greed, they are an accursed group.  They have left the straight way and wandered to follow the ways of Baalam son of Beor, who loved the wages of wickedness.  Balaam was rebuked by a donkey, who spoke with a man's voice and restrained this prophet from his madness.  (Which means that Balaam's lifestyle was crazier than a donkey speaking!)

These evil men are like springs without water or mists driven by a storm.  The blackest darkness is reserved for them.  They mouth empty, boastful words (if anyone boasts, let him boast in the Lord [II Corinthians 10:17]).  They appeal to the lustful desires of sinful human nature, enticing people that have just escaped from those that live in error.  They promise freedom, while they are themselves slaves to depravity.

"...a [human] is a slave to whatever has mastered [them]."  (Vs. 19b)

If they escaped corruption through the knowledge of Christ, then again became entangled and overcome with sin, they are worse off.  It would have been better if they never knew the way of righteousness than to have turned their backs on the sacred command given them.

These proverbs are true:

" 'A dog returns to its vomit.' " (Proverbs 26:11; Vs. 22a)

" 'A sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud.' " (Vs. 22b)

Lori's Thoughts:

Wow.  Peter sure has my attention.

I know what the absence of God feels like - the world is pressing down on me; I'm a worthless, wretched, unloved creature; there is no point to life.  Sex and alcohol helped me temporarily forget my woes.  I left home many times, hoping for some great transformation.  But, every time I returned, it was as if I had never left.

God never gave up on me, even when I did.  I am precious in His eyes, and I don't understand why.  I'm prideful and I think about rebelling all the time.  But, I don't want to go back to being apart from Him.

I struggled with depression, because of childhood abuse, for 25 1/2 years.  I'm 26 years old.  In July of 2010, I asked God for a miracle.  I heard a man speak about how we limit God, in our minds.  We ask for little things - like making sure our cars don't break down today or to help us make it through work, because we're exhausted.  We should trust Him enough to ask for big things and expect a reply.  If we are in tune with God, we will know what's really important and what to ask for.  I asked God to remove my depression.  I wanted to stop destroying my relationships with my family, my boyfriends, and my friends.  I wanted to stop surviving and start living.  I wanted to wake up the next morning and not be burdened with the weight of my guilt, insecurities, and anxieties.

It worked.

As my brother would say, I've been "clean" for almost 7 months.  It's still a struggle.  I can get frustrated, angry or sad; but, it's no longer the end of my world.  I have hope for tomorrow.  Some days, I'm overwhelmed with joy, because I know Someone loves me, just because.  And, for the first time in my life, I like myself.  I'm beautiful inside and out.  I can love others and not be a burdensome "Debbie Downer".

I want this for you.  But, I can't force you.  I hope, though, that you surrender to God's love and let Him revive you to live and thrive as He has intended for you.  Being high on life is so much better than being high on anything else.  You can function with it.  You're capable of accomplishing great things.

Like what, you may ask?  How about bonding with your family?  Sky-diving with your mother, going to DCFest with your brother and sisters, West Coast swing dancing and karaoke with our cousins.  How about sponsoring a child in a third-world country, feeding the homeless in DC, or paying for a room for a week to help a struggling couple?

What is my point?

1. Family is essential.  The devil divides and conquers us.  Together, you are stronger and can stand against evil, by helping each other carry your burdens, encouraging and praying for each other.  When God destroyed the world with the flood, who was saved?  Noah and his family.  My family was broken.  With God, we're closer now and on fire for God.

2. How do you know you've been saved and God is transforming you?  Once you acknowledge God, accept His free gift of eternal life without sin, you then start to focus on the well-being of others, rather than just on yourself.

I WANT TO BE WITH YOU IN HEAVEN!!!

May the Holy Spirit guide you.  (Or, if you prefer, "May the Force be with you!")

Lori's Thoughts:

Why is Saul's lineage so important?  Well, he was one of the greatest kings of Israel.  He was a man after God's own heart.  Saul was a beautiful man, until he started to worship himself.  He ignored God and God couldn't bless him anymore.

An unlikely boy was made king: David.  He who was so close to God, that for his sake, God blessed David's people.  Even when the Israelite nation defiled the covenant with God, for many years God spared them from being destroyed by their enemies because of David.  Even after David died, God had mercy on the Israelites.  We cannot deny that God is patient and loving with us.

Now, I can't refrain from bringing up Jonathan.  He is my absolute favorite person in the Old Testament.  He was a good man.  I hope to have a husband like him, some day.  Jonathan knew Saul was wrong when he tried to kill David.  Now, God had said that David would become king.  Saul's line would be cut off.  Jonathan should have been next on the throne, if Saul hadn't turned from God.  But, Jonathan protected David, giving him supplies while he hid from Saul.  At the same time, Jonathan stayed loyal to his father and fought by his father's side in battle.  They both died in gruesome ways and I cried when Jonathan was murdered.  But, the brotherly love that he shared with David prevailed.

David adopted Jonathan's crippled son, Mephibosheth, and David treated him as royalty.  This is an epic story that would make a great movie.  As long as they cast me as Jonathan's wife.  :)

It's stories like these, that I can relate to, that help me believe that the Word is true and applicable to me, today.

II Peter 1 (NIV)

Summary:

Verses 1&2

Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, writes to those who, through righteousness from God, have received a faith as precious as those of the apostles.  He wishes us grace and peace in abundance, through the knowledge of our God.

Making One's Calling and Election Sure
Verses 3-11

God's divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His glory and goodness.  Through these attributes, we have been given precious promises, so that through them we can participate in divine nature and escape the world's corruption brought on by evil desires.

We should make every effort to add goodness to our faith, knowledge to our goodness, self-control to our knowledge, perseverance to our self-control, godliness to our perseverance, brotherly/sisterly kindness to our godliness, and love to our kindness.  Possessing these things with increasing amounts will prevent us from becoming ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of Christ.  If anyone lacks these things, they are near-sighted and blind, forgetting that their past sins have been cleansed.  (They have relapsed into living with guilt.)  So, we should be eager to make our calling and election sure.  If we do so, we will not fall, but will receive a rich welcome into Christ's eternal kingdom.

Prophecy of Scripture
Verses 12-21

Peter will always remind us of these things, even though we know them and are firmly established in the truth.  As long as he lives in the tent of this body he will refresh our memory, because he knows that he will soon put his body aside as Christ had told him.  Peter will make every effort to ensure that we remember what he has told us after he is gone.

The apostles did not follow legends or myths of Christ's power and coming.  They were eyewitnesses of His majesty.  Christ received honor and glory from the Father, when He said " 'This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.' " (Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:7, Luke 9:35; Verse 17b)  The disciples heard God's voice while they were on the sacred mountain.

The word of the prophets is now more certain, since their prophecies of Christ came to pass.  We should pay attention to their words, which are like a light in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in our hearts.  No prophecy came by the prophet's own interpretation.  Prophecies never had their origin in the will of humans.  Men and women spoke from God while carried by the Holy Spirit.

Lori's Thoughts:

Faith is like a precious stone.  The richer we are in our faith, the more beautiful this stone gets.  Faith is a confident expectation of something.  God has promised to make us whole and to save us from this evil world.  Expect peace and love. Be strong in your faith.

Once you have faith, that is you believe in God, do something with it.  Share that love.  Don't just talk about it.  Using it = goodness.  Think about why you do good.  That way, when people doubt and question your motives, you'll have a solid response = knowledge.  Self-control: you now know what it is like to live a life of self-love compared to living a life with love for God, others, as well as yourself.  Sometimes loving others is difficult - people are broken and have a tendency to vent their frustrations at the wrong person, because they feel safer than confronting those that hurt them.  Self-love begins to look more attractive.  Just remember, nothing worthwhile is ever easy.  And people can change.  You did.  Just ask God for the strength to continue loving others.  It's so rewarding when they love you back.

Perseverance: don't give up.  If you are weak, let yourself fall in His loving and strong arms.  He'll hold you.  Godliness: a lot of people picture a solemn, passionless old person when they think of this word.  Not so.  In actuality, almost everyone pursues godliness.  Triathletes perfect their bodies with diet, exercise, and rigorous training.  Actors and musicians do the same, to look good when they perform.  Anyone in the military trains their minds and bodies intensely.  We strive for excellence and perfection.  This is godliness.  So, I encourage you to get physically fit.  We function better when we feel good about ourselves.  I also encourage you to get spiritually fit.  Be a soldier for God, fighting with Him against the dark forces that plague us with guilt, pain, and suffering.

Brotherly kindness: not letting your new-found awesomeness make you arrogant.  Love: conquers all.  We are more than conquerors in Christ.  We are champions.

Peter writes this letter to tell us that this is real.  We can't see God.  We can't prove His existence.  Non-believers will use this against us.  But, some people did see God - in human form.  They want to share their experience with us.  I believe Peter.  The Holy Spirit spoke to the prophets, who spoke to the disciples, who speak to us.  Experience God for yourself.  Go tell others about Him.
